Wide Screen Play Using Windows 10
Silverback replied to CrownVic95's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
Commiserations. Sometimes you just can't win and its best to give up. Sadly this seems to be one of those cases. If anyone else reads this and has this issue and wants to carry out more tests ... Compatability mode on the settings for the application in windows should allow 16 bit colour for that application. Windows 10 wont let you select 16 bit colour for everything unlike earlier versions of windows. For this specific issue I don't think it will deliver the solution wanted. The windows settings may allow a lower monitor resolution and override the chipset manufacturers setting but it's unlikely. Some games do change screen resolutions. Closing them should reset the screen resolution to the value before the launch if they are properly written. -
Wide Screen Play Using Windows 10

just thought of the following. Or use the widows settings/control panel to set the display resolution to 1024x768 before launching RTII with the monitor set to "wide" on the physical monitor if you haven't already tried? (may not be possible) Ive never run in windowed mode before My setup won't do windowed RTII without desktop setting changes - My 1920 by 1080 setting for the display wasn't recognised by RTII as suitable ( 1152 x 864 or greater is needed) until I set the desktop to 16 bit colour via windows settings/control panel after reading this link http://www.thegameengine.org/railroad-tycoon-2/railroad-tycoon-2-windowed-mode/ The window isn't resizable by dragging the edges though. The Post preview is now via the last icon above the reply box (looks a bit like a magnifying glass over a sheet of paper to me). -
Wide Screen Play Using Windows 10
Silverback replied to CrownVic95's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
Maybe you need to try the intel website or the lenovo website for later drivers than those from windows update. 15.40.25.4463 may be the latest version from Intel direct and says it fixes some scaling problems. Does your screen display RTII full height or is the black border all around? I've not noticed a burn problem with my screen but I have noticed some persistent image issues on brighter parts of the screen (after I had set the brilliance to 100% and also left the display static for several hours) which I thought were burn in but which faded away to nothing over an hour or so when other applications were used. Just make sure that you know how to revert to the older driver if the new one doesn't work as (rarely) the newer drivers may not work on your laptop. Getting into windows 10 safe mode is more difficult than it should be as the old methods don't work. At least the game works on windows 10 which is not bad for an old game. In my experience it is usually oddities in the graphics systems or the installer that cause the majority of issues, especially on 64 bit operating systems. If you could repair your old PC and have a way to reinstall XP then maybe it could be used just for older games - the problem is getting the parts e.g IDE hard disks are getting rare. IDE to SATA converters are available but then costs start to rise. -
Wide Screen Play Using Windows 10
Silverback replied to CrownVic95's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
A scaling issue is the likeliest culprit as you have already identified, but there are several places where scaling is set other than in the default generic windows settings. I don't run games on the windows 10 machine I have so can't help directly. You may need to search the full manuals for your monitor and laptop for the equivalents of the following. MONITOR SETTINGS I use a windows 7 desktop and monitor for games (32 bit) and my monitor has monitor image size settings of Auto or Wide. Auto keeps the aspect ratio the PC tells it to display whereas wide always stretches it. These settings vary from monitor to monitor. From what you say I'm presuming that you are using an external monitor and not the laptop's screen. (If you want to use the laptop screen then there may be a utility on your laptop change these settings for your built in screen or graphics chipset.) One additional thought here is if you use an external monitor then you may need to make sure ONLY this is in use as using the laptop screen and the monitor together may cause problems and show a smaller image on the external screen to match the built in screen for example, and also make sure the laptop detects the monitor's capabilities correctly as it may not know what the external monitor is capable of. There is usually a special set of function keys on laptops to tell it to use the internal screen, external screen or both. Sometimes a monitor may have different settings for different inputs - some monitors have VGA, HDMI, DVI etc inputs so did your XP PC connect to a different input on your monitor from your laptop and could this have affected your settings? GRAPHICS CARD / CHIPSET DRIVER SETTINGS The settings for Nvidia graphics card in the Nvidia control panel for my PC has 3 scaling modes Aspect ratio, full screen or no scaling. It seems as though you are getting the equivalent of no scaling - The windows control panel doesn't show these scaling options in most versions of windows so you need to use the graphics chipset manufacturer's utility, which may not be installed but should be available, or the laptops hardware settings which can be a separate utility provided by the laptop manufacturer. You might just need to increase the amount of memory the laptop allocates to graphics but this is unlikely. GRAPHICS DRIVER CHANGE You could also see if the graphics chipset manufacturer for your laptop has a different driver from the one windows 10 is using and change the driver. You could also see if windows has an updated driver but the chipset manufacturers drivers may have more facilities. Finally I always keep the aspect ratio of the game as this is more to my taste then stretching the image widthways but for old games like this I do scale up the image in proportion to fill the monitor height and leave black bars either side of the image, so I use the setting of "Auto" on the monitor itself and "Aspect Ratio" in the Nvidia control panel which does exactly what I want. This took me some time to work out as the default was to do exactly what I think you want i.e. for the image to fill the monitor in both directions ! Hope this helps - Good Luck -
Campaign scenario 8 freezes at initial cutscene

Glad you found a work round. When installed from CD/DVD the cutscene files are never automatically installed but run from the disc. They always needed to be manually copied to to the installation folder for best performance. -
Campaign scenario 8 freezes at initial cutscene
Silverback replied to cdk's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
The file that is crashing is probably CV08.SMK - Try downloading the Smacker Rad Video tools from http://www.radgametools.com/smkdown.htm and install them and see if the file will play in that outside Railroad Tycoon. However they may not work on a 64 bit Operating System - the download page only mentions Operating Systems up to Vista. Don't forget if you install RT2 in the Program Files folder on Win 7 (Vista?) or later the save files are under your hidden appdata folder <Drive:>USERS\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ , not necessarily where the program files themselves are so you may need to delete those savefiles etc too just in case one is corrupt. Your individual settings too could be there Maybe reinstall to a folder outside program files to avoid the issue. Rereading your post suggests a corrupt save file might just be an issue. It seems odd that 1-7 are OK and 8 onwards are not. Hope that helps. - if CV07.SMK is OK you could try copying it to CV08.SMK (keep a copy of the original). Try reading the readme file with the game as this mentions what to do if videos are slow running etc. -
Campaign scenario 8 freezes at initial cutscene
Silverback replied to cdk's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
I've never had any trouble with the "cutscenes" but I normally play the Platinum version (1.56) with all the movie files etc. (anim folder i.e the .SMK files) copied to the hard disk (keeping the CD structure). Also you don't need to play the scenarios in any order - just scroll the campaign scenario selection screen using the left/right cursor keys/ I normally don't play the cutscenes through, just mouse click when they start. The downloadable versions may differ. If You could work out which if any SMK file is "faulty" you could maybe copy a different file over it, but I have no idea which exact file it may be. Also I use win 7 32 bit. -
(RT2Plat) Question About Cargo Delivery and Pickup
Silverback replied to RobS's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
I agree I'm probably totally wrong with my understanding of yellow flags, especially as I rarely use yellow flagging. There are still thing to learn in this game from the last century! Re Styria 1840 the events for the passengers are tested against a small territory which is where the Semmering Pass station needs to be situated. I have never seen more than one house there so passengers are not demanded and not many are generated (an occasional passenger will be generated there) but 4 or more passengers need to be hauled from the area annually. The pass will never demand passengers and I don't think the author ever expected it to. The previous version of the scenario used different mechanisms to count loads - A rail connection needed to be made via the pass first but then the passenger haulage requirement could be met by hauling between the territories either side of the pass via any route and not necessarily via the pass The event (labelled 143) uses CompanyTerritoryTypeLoadsHauledFromThis Year(0) < 4 to generate a penalty, and the status event (labelled 027) uses CompanyTerritoryTypeLoadsHauledFromThisYear(0) to count the passengers. It would seem that passengers on a train hauled from that territory are counted on delivery elsewhere but that they do not need to actually originate at the station in the territory but can be hauled in from elsewhere and then hauled out again on the same train. As I've always followed the suggested method of flagging I don't know if other flag settings would give the desired outcome. Its a pity that the documentation written for the scenario isn't on the platinum disk as the authors hints are invaluable in completing it. The map download on this site has a version of one of the files attached (the v4.00 version) but not the other. (RT2Plat) Question About Cargo Delivery and Pickup
Silverback replied to RobS's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
I don't think I've ever used the Leave on train option, and rarely use deliver - I don't think I've used deliver to force delivery at a station!. I mainly control delivery by changing the type of cars on the train. The Store flag I do use from time to time, for example where gathering loads at a central point for later delivery to a not yet build station or when using a Shay loco where gradients are steep for part of a journey, but normally default is fine. If the train consist is constant then leave on train (at all stations) is mainly useless I guess. Now for the difference between Leave on Train and Default For example for wool as a cargo. If a train goes from say a sheep farm to a station where wool is demanded and back again then if it has a wool car it will load with wool at the sheep farm but then it will never unload if leave on train is set. I suppose this could be useful if say there are 3 stations on the route. Lets say stations 1 and 2 both supply wool and stations 2 and 3 both demand wool. The Train goes from 1 to 2 to 3 and then back to 1 without stopping again at no. 2 and has 4 wool cars throughout the journey. If there are 2 car loads of wool at station 1 and 2 more at station 2, then as the train has 4 wool cars, 2 loads will be picked up at station 1. On arrival at station 2 and as wool is demanded, unless the leave on train flag is set then the 2 car loads of wool from station 1 will be unloaded and then the 2 loads being supplied by station 2 will be loaded and then delivered to station 3 (unless of course leave on train is set at station 3 also in which case the wool would be hauled to station 1 to be dealt with according to the station 1 flag settings). If leave on train were set at station 2 then station 3 would get 4 loads of wool. I suppose this could be useful if the factory demanding wool at station 2 was owned by another company. Under the default flags the wool would be unloaded at station 2 as it is demanded there. If station 2 did NOT demand wool then Default and Leave on Train would have exactly the same effect for wool at that station provided the train consist was not changed. NB if a demand level falls to 0 at a well supplied station then the cargo is still demanded, you just don't get as much cash. The percentage of nominal value you get varies depending on the difficulty level being played. One Scenario where Leave on train is suggested is Stria 1840, however this is somewhat odd, but the author suggests the following. "Semmering tourist deliveries. This event plays a bit different from the previous version. The passengers now have to be actually delivered to the station on top of the Semmering Pass. During my games I found it easiest to just set the delivery flag to yellow (Sell only demanded cargo, leave undemanded cargo on the train to be sold later) for the Semmering Pass destination since that destination is not likely to demand passengers. Therefore a train schedule might be: Murzzuschlag (green-yellow), Semmering Pass (yellow), Gloggnitz (green-yellow), Semmering Pass (yellow)." This suggests the delivery counts for a number of passengers but not as a revenue sale!. I've always done what he suggests in the scenario without thinking about it! from the flag descriptions you would think "deliver" was the flag to set. Maybe its a bug? It certainly an oddity for the scenario does count the "deliveries" when flags are set as suggested. -
The old riptrack website had some useful tools - here's a link to an archived version https://web.archive.org/web/20010409053525/http://riptrack.iwarp.com/tools.html I don't know if all the resources are there any more as its a 15 years old site. In its day it was the most useful; site for map making in RTII

I don't know the scenario in question but from memory to buy industry in scenarios you need to be playing at hard or expert level.

need help understanding rrt tsc stock trading
Silverback replied to kamchow's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
I believe there IS an exact formula BUT only the game programmers would have known what this is. How accurately the game models the real world is also unknown . I think the game internally hold its numbers to several decimal places but shows them on screen as rounded numbers so trying to work out the formulae exactly is difficult. I think is not a simple calculation. The only way to know for sure would be to disassemble the code unless you can get hold of a copy of the source code. -
The triggers etc. are listed in the text files that were installed from the platinum CD. or earlier versions. Editor2.txt and editor3.txt. are the files in the program files folder. Its possible that railroad tycoon II from steam is missing these files. There are many triggers for loads hauled depending on exactly what needs to be measured e.g. type of load or between certain territories etc. there's also a trigger CompanyIndustryInvestments which may help you I'll try to attach some fileseditor3.txtEDITOR2.TXTEventEditor.zip the eventeditor.zip is pre-platinum though. There may well be bugs and inaccuracies! PS the files aren't mine

railroad tycoon ii second century mission the chunnel
Silverback replied to kamchow's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
Just looked at the map events - the briefing event gives the values you quote BUT it looks like the gold win event requires 100 loads England to Belgium not just the 75 the silver requires. You could change the event values in map #E12camp for the gold win in the editor and restart the scenario as a change to the map wont load until the scenario is restarted from the campaign screen or just try to haul 100 loads if you don't fancy restarting the mission from an earlier save. (Or haul what it says you needed to get gold and use the gold win cheat - see the cheats section of this site). There's no patched map for this scenario on this site so you'll have to do the edit yourself but do check the download section of the forum for other map semi official patches - D Masters did several of them. -
I've never been able to find The Linux version of RTII by Loki. Loki closed early 2002. The Windows Platinum edition has been reported as working under WINE This url may help https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1552 also this one https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1552&iTestingId=22924 Of course you will need a copy of the windows game - I'm not sure if it is still sold new though. Good Luck

What year did Railroad Tycooon 2 come out?
Silverback replied to CFioren317's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
The 2 games look totally different. http://theodor.lauppert.ws/games/rdx.htm shows a screenshot from Railroad tycoon deluxe - there is also a link to the download the game (free and legally) from http://downloads.2kgames.com/railroads/Railroad_Tycoon.zip Theres a screenshot for Railroad tycoon 2 here http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/529975-railroad-tycoon-ii-platinum-edition/images/screen-4 Finally if you look at http://www.sedore.net/rails/ then there are (broken) links to patches one of which is described as converting Railroad Tycoon Deluxe to version 2 (of railroad tycoon deluxe) - the page is dated before RR Tycoon II was released. jeffryfisher is correct I believe. Railroad Tycoon Deluxe would run under windows 95 but was a DOS program, and I have heard it described as version 2 RRT II is not the same as RRT DLX v2 Perhaps you could download the game from the link to a windows PC, play it and see if that's what you remember from 20 years ago!. -
What year did Railroad Tycooon 2 come out?
Silverback replied to CFioren317's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
TRANSPORT Tycoon was out in 1994 and had an isometric view and could be confused perhaps but it had other modes of transport too e.g. boats, planes. The Railroad tycoon games - both original and deluxe - had a top down map view. In 1994 it would not have been Railroad Tycoon 2 which was released in 1998 and required at least Windows 95 which was released in August 95. This game had an Isometric view. Railroad tycoon 2 was made by a totally different company than Railroad tycoon original/deluxe. Memory plays funny tricks sometimes. -
Classic map China, Peoples train.
Silverback replied to Vendin's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
Have a look at this thread http://forum.dune2k.com/topic/23049-faulty-events-in-fixed-peoples-train-campaign-map-16chi1/ Very difficult map - the outcome of whichever map version is used is very dependent on where the industries are generated and hopefully all the initial stations covering 4 houses too. A good start is vital. The official strategy guide says you can't issue bonds but the map allows this! The map doesn't let you change dividends BUT on start the map is paying a dividend which seems wrong. -
RRT2:Platinum cheat codes not working.
Silverback replied to ZepTepi's topic in Railroad Tycoon 2 Discussion
check the default2.lng file in the railroad tycoon 2 folder (assuming youy are running on windows) for the cheat codes 2722 to 2737 to make sure you have the right ones - the lines below are the default english ones - but can be changed. Also read the beginning of the file as it tells you how to debug it. ;the following are cheat codes - ;they can be freely translated to just about anything 2722 "BigfootGold" 2723 "BigfootSilver" 2724 "BigfootBronze" 2725 "Bigfoot" 2726 "BoBo" 2727 "King of the hill" 2728 "Cattle futures" 2729 "Powerball" 2730 "Slush fund" 2731 "Let me in" 2732 "Speed Racer" 2733 "AMD103" 2734 "Casey Jones" 2735 "Show me the trains" 2736 "Overtime" 2737 "Viagra" -
I also found some useful information here http://www.thegameengine.org/railroad-tycoon-2/ It has a section on LINUX and WINE and also how to install on 64 bit windows (not directly possible? - need to install on 32 bit and then copy the files?).
-
I have windows 8.1 (32bit) Pro installed on 1 PC I have (most new computers have 64 bit windows so that may be an issue) nothing special installed on it. no games on it just microsoft office - it a test PC so I can try and get used to the windows 8 interface. So I ran a quick test. Installed platinum edition from original disc (to a folder I called games outside the program files folder) didn't run game left disc in drive Downloaded unzipped and copied the files from the 1.56 patch to the folder (don't know if this is NEEDED but ! wanted to be able to conntrol screen scrolling better) ran the game from the folder. Worked fine (I didn't need to set up any compatability settings) I don't have a 64 bit windows installed anywhere at present so can't help with 64 bit If you are building or setting up your own PC I think retail boxes (not OEM) of windows now include both 32 and 64 bit whereas OEM versions are either 64 or 32 bit only. Hope this helps! I normally use 32bit windows and have no trouble on that either. PS I also rebooted the PC and RTII still worked (after I remembered to put the platinum CD back in!) as I hadn't set up any other add ons on the PC
