I've found a couple of good sites for freeware games, Abandonia, and Abandonia Reloaded

Here are my picks from what I've found (in no particular order):

Dune 2 - needs no introduction.

Dune - the original game, again from Abandonia, works fine, but on a 19 inch monitor, it looks pixelated. Maybe it's just my screen.

FreeCiv - Civilisation clone

Ground Control!!! - The original Ground Control - a RTT (Real Time Tactical) game with great graphics.

Commander Keen 1 - 2D platformer

Meh, I'll probably find more, but this is it for now. Oh, and one last thing - Abandonia and Abandonia Reloaded are great search engines for games such as GTA1 and 2.

Whoa, whoa.  Maybe we should limit this to actual freeware/shareware, rather than including abandonware (older games that were once for sale, and in some cases, still technically are).  After all, abandonware technically isn't entirely legal.

I'll add Beyond the Red Line, a free Battlestar Galactica space sim based on the Freespace 2 Engine.

Oh, ok. That's fine with me, but it appeared to me that it was legal, since Abandonia has removed games from its site at the request of the Entertainment Software Association. I suppose that it would be illegal to download Dune, but it's readily available on the net. Abandonia Reloaded doesn't just have abandonware.

Attached is screenshot of the Command & Conquer download page, with a nice big arrow pointing at what I'm talking about.

Revised list:

FreeCiv - I think this is free, but I'm not sure. Hmmm, maybe it's because it's got free in it.

Ground Control - I happen to know that this is available on fileplanet, since that's where I got my copy, and I don't think that a big site like fileplanet would want to go flouting the rules.

Yeah, I'd rather not simply list a couple websites (or hundreds of games) that have all the old games (such as HoTU). That makes the list kinda pointless.

Yep freeciv is ok, and so is fround control

Yes. Gunner :)

I added wiki article fr doom open source stuff since I wasn't sure on correct website.

Hmm, I'm guessing the BSG mod is better than the official BSG game they released? :P

The point of this list is to collect free/open source games so that people will not have to pirate games. Just like the software thread that contains many free alternatives to replace pirated software.
