Game review by Vilgent on Battlefield 1942.

Producer: EA

Type: FPS

Time Set: World War Two

Storyline: Basically, this is set in the World War Two days where you fight as an un-named soldier in the classic Allies vs. Axis battles.

Graphics: The graphics in this game are quite impressive. It offers a clear view of buildings, fighters, bombers and the constant fighting around you. Regardless, the color scheme for this game is horrendous, nothing more then a Command And Conquer: Renegade remix. It offers bright colors for the largest battles that there were, almost a fairy-land type feel for a grim, gory WWII battlefield. Further more, when attempt was made to bring the full grimness of battle out through proper mixes of darker colors and shades it failed miserably considering lighter forms of darker colors were applied and made this attempt worthless.

Gameplay: What can I say; I found the game play utterly disapproving. I do admit that there must have been difficulties in getting an infantry/armored/navel/aerial feel for it but again, EA failed horribly. Skill has little to do with this as when you even TRY to conserve ammo by firing off accurate, short bursts you still run out of ammo WAY to quickly. Also, I like the concept of making the sniper rifle fire slowly as it did, but the rate it fires is horrendous and epically mixed with the fact headshots get less and less reliable from afar, even when you fired dead-on.

Also, the tank driving is quite aggregating as you get stuck and chopped up without even being able to lay machine gun shots down on the infantry. Further more, the aerial controls go way to fast to where you can spend hours just trying to figure out how to properly fly.

Historical Accuracy: I do give them credit, despite the awful color scheme they pretty much gave the player a clear feel of the real, World War II battlefields.

Weapons: There are five main weapons for the Allies and five for the Axis. Despite this, they are all pretty much the same as their counter-parts, (I.E - the Allied/Axis submachine guns are pretty much the same as each other) and leave you with grenades, a hand-gun and aggervation.

Overall: Don't waste your time, nor money, I was amazed by all its awards and then I got it to be greeted by the fact this game is horrible. If you want a real World War II game get Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Though it doesn't offer the armored/sea/navel perspectives it does give you a great game with many challenging players and things to do.

Ups: An actuall skirmish mode, a aerial/navel/ground viewpoint.

Downs: Stupid and bad AI, horrible color scheme/game play, insane amount of sound issues, steep hardware requirments for crystal clear gameplay.

Overall Rating: 73%

I agree with you on this, and I like your review.

I might add that not only is airplanes and tanks aswell as boats behaving unrealistic, but they're way, awy too easy to control.

Everyone is running towards a newly spawned aircaft. An aircraft should be very hard to fly.(And I know that, because I love flight simulator :P, where the aircrafts need skills to be flown)

The airplanes should just be left out of this game. You have to fly very low, even with bombers to hit something at all!

hmmmm and to think I almost got this instead planetside, not ot be offtopic but is planetside a game that better represents the whole air/tank/inf. war idea? and I agree air craft should be harder to fly in these games and support my force feedback 2 joystick properly and I dont mean using the view tab thing to fly the airplane . . . GRRRR!

well there is one thing, you say when you aimed directly at there heads it would miss? well if the game creators were trying to be realistic, then it shouldn't have hit them if it was right on from far away, the farther away, the less accurate the shot will be, in real life, unless you adjust the sights every time for different distanced shots, which i doubt they did in the game ???

I just got this game, together with the expansion Road to Rome. I just have to say.. I love this game !

What do you guys mean you run out of ammo ? I have finished the campaign and not one single time was there a moment that I was out of ammo. Of course, you don't carry much, but grab stuff from the dead, they won't be needing it anymore will they ? There's a variaty of weapons to be found. And you can fire accurate and kill enemy soldiers with one burts, you just have to aim right (take in account distances).

As for tank driving, it's excellent ! You just need to get the feel for it and pick the right tank ;) The tans in which the driver can shoot, the gun works excellent for infantry. Obviously you can't see all around you, so you might miss infantry that pops up behind you and throws some granades (or fire a missle). I do agree on the planes however, they are difficult to fly.

The graphics are excellent IMO. I don't know what videocard you used Ghost, but on mine it works very well (GeForce 3). I just can't wait till the GeForce FX 5900 comes out, it'll be even better :)

I installed the game and didn't encounter any problems what so ever.

Out of 10:

Graphics: 9

Game play: 8 (lower due to the plane flying)

re-playability: 9

I thought the demo was OK...although not automatically reloading when a clip runs out is kind of dumb.

Planes are fun after you get the hang of it. :)

On Google, search for Battlefield maps. You'll get plenty of hits to choose from ;)

Btw Duke, I agree, once you get the hang of flying, it's fun. It's still damn hard to drop those bombs exactly where you want them though (apart from those big planes who carpet bomb :)).

i can! lets see.. MOH is a great single player game i say.. and i quess its good for multiplayer to (i played it on lan) u can select weapons and all.. but in BF1942 the maps are much more larger,in BF1942 there are tons of tanks and planes and ships that u can control each one of em, in B1942 there are voice clips like: Cover Me! in keyshortcut: F1-F8 in BF1942 there are more modes for internet. what can i say battlefield was created for internet tho his singleplayer sucks. (bot may not always shoot u)

I have been playing BF1942 on the internet lately (via GameSpy) and I have to admit, no problems what so ever. My internet connection most likely will not provide any reason for problems (cable, 1.5mb down/1mb up), so this might be different for others.

But I haven't experienced any problems, and no lag reported.

i've been playin a little medal of honor... it's fun, i like how the bot actually hits you! though it is still rather easy, in most parts, i liked the D-day part, i wish it would have been more fighting, less runing, but it was accurate :) and very similar to saving private ryan scene ;)

what can i say, i love this game. great graphics, great action gameplay.

this game is like World War II Online, Blitzkrieg, except

1) you don't have to pay to play (as in montly cost, not buying the actual game)

2) the game is actually complete, with little bugs (with patches) and all main theaters of the war exist, with extra official maps occasionally released (Battle of Britain, anyone?)

3) you don't have to ride for 5 minutes to find some action.

4) you can jump into a large amount of different vehicles, ships, and aircraft.

5) the game physics, while sketcy sometimes, allow cool and funny things to happen all the time.

6) with a halfway decent system and the right server, you can have a 64 player frag-fest in a close area (small map) with no lag.

7) variety of classes to pick from, which are a lot more balanced than you think!

8) it's fun!

i'm sure i can go on and on, but that's enough to make my point. WW2O tried to create a realistic WW2 FPS, that combined with horrible bugs killed it. It was a great idea but it was way too realistic. You have to pull back on the realism to keep the game fun, and that's the direction Battlefield goes. Sure, it might not be as detailed as MOH, but then if I wanted to play a really realistic game, I'll play something else. Battlefield also has mods for almost every major war the US has been in.

I guess it's my preference in games. It's just lots of fun to play, if you're not completely bombarded by noobs beaching ur ships and ramming ur planes with jeeps when ur taking off...
