in the original (commercial) Wolfenstein 3D Episodes, Hitler was in some of them if i am not mistaken, and i think you even got to kill him

(not sure about this because i only had the shareware version and tho i really really realllllllllllllly wanted the other Episodes, i never got around to getting them seeing as I didn't have a credit card back then, so this may or not be correct but it is what i was told)

if this is the case then it sucks that the update didn't even follow the tradition

oh my goodness, those SS's are so cool!

RTCW sucks compared to Wolfenstein 3D! Why couldn't RTCW have had cool Hitler bosses?

Do they even have posters of Hitler /Swastika Curtains/Posters of Nazis with Gas Masks/ on the walls everywhere in RTCW? Seems to me like Wolfenstein 3D wasn't pulling any punches and hence was the far creepier game.

IIRC, there were Nazi propaganda posters in some of the towns in RTCW. But yes, Wolf3D was amazing. Spear of Destiny was also really good, and it was (very loosely) based on fact. Hitler did have the Spear de Longivus (sp?) in one of his treasure vaults. Rumour has it he dies a mere 80 minutes after the vault was captured by Allied forces. ;)

By the way, the "Spear of Destiny" was supposedly the spearhead that pierced the side of Christ while he was on the cross. Those who held it would be invincible, but those who lost it would meet a quick end. Pretty neat, huh?

Yes. The Nazis and the occult. It seems that those two can't be separated. We have: Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Indiana Jones 1 and 3, real "theories" and so on.

Anyways, the game is a good shooter. The levels are cool. I love that level where you have to protect a tank (well, I love the level design itself, not the mission). The enemies are very good made, the weapons are cool too. But I think id Software stops there. It seems that they really are unable to create a good story. You already know what the game is all about (the Nazis want a 1000 year old knight to conquer the world for the etc). It would be better if you had to find the facts, and if they had skipped the intro-movie, which gives the story away.

For me, a game must have a good story. It's like a movie where you play the main role of a character. A movie doesn't tell you everything when it begins, but the character finds out what he is after, what his enemies or whatever goals are. Imagine that the very first episode of X-files would tell the viewer everything. What point would it then be to see the rest of the episodes? Sure, the levels can be entertaining, but it all stops there. Deus Ex for example had an excellent story, the best I've ever played. The story keeps the player going trough the missions, searching for clues and answers to what the enemy is up to. RtCW seems not to. That's the problem with all id Softwares games. Their levels are excellent, the games they make has very small amounts of bugs or problems and so on. But, the weapons we can use has already been used in previous games, ex: the minigun, the double-barreled shotgun, the electro-gun etc. Heck, they can even make people from the stone ages have miniguns that shoots stones if they want.

Another "issue" for RtCW is that they have completely forgot the "reality". If the Nazis can create such powerful weapons, then why not use them in the war? Why not drop some lopers in the middle of the UK? Consider that country conquered? If they can make tesla-guns and mini-guns, why the hell can't they create an atomic bomb? Sure, I know it is a game and it is all fiction, but still. Of course, in Doom 3, I will have no reason to complain on tesla-technology or mini-guns, because that is the future after all...

Then there are the levels and freedom of gameplay issue. I tought it was redicoulous when the mission failed because one tank was destroyed. The player could just as well come trough the city itself without the help of the tank. What, is the war over because one tank was destroyed? There is still time to stop the enemy! What about the important persons? OSA seems to know enought already about ever damn place in the Third Reich, so why is one man so important?

I am also dissapointed with the "level-path" you take. There is one way. If you don't follow this way, you won't finnish the level. I want id Software to create levels where the player chooses which way to go, say path 1: 10 ordinary guards, or path 2: 5 special gurads. You can either take the path where you have to deal with easy enemies, but they will be twice as many as those in path 2. Or you can choose to deal with the special guards, who are harder to beat, but not as many as in path 1. This is a good way to make games more player-friendly, more asking the player how he wants to finish the game.

So, the bottom line for id Softwares games:

+Good level design.

+Good graphics.

+Cool weapons.

+Cool enemies.

+Almost no bugs.

-Story sux.

-No freedom in levels.

-The feeling that everything in the game has been done before.

Do someone know about some kind of patch enabling skirmish (mp-like game with bots)? Or I have to train in single missions, like in AvP2?

hmm, i never patched it.... but i don't think that there's a skirmish mode... perhaps some people did create bots for the game though... just look on the web

There is a testing bot, but I think you must have another thing to make it work. They promised bots for Enemy Territory (RtCW "Expansion Pack"). Try:

www.planetwolfenstein.com

Both have instructions on how and why... I think...
