I think that the $18 means a step of manhood. When you finish school, your usally 18 and concidered an adult in the US. That might be what it means, not sure. And I have no idea what the 36 means.

$18 + $18 = $36 ;D I don't know if that's the reason why, but it's a coincedence... ;)

It is not a coincedence; I want to know why it is either one--why not give a round number like $20, or $25?...I KNOW!! I will ask the rabbi at my temple; he should know!

i've never been to one of those but if someone is going to pay me $36 to go, then I'll go

I think you only get the money if its your party... $36 wouldn't be enough for me to get my tip snipped.... I couldn't imagine getting it done as an adolescence, do it when they are born or not at all.

DjCiD is right about how you do not get paid to go. However, he is talking about a briss. If any of the rabbis at my temple knows, I will post what it is here. (I guess I will also post if they don't know.)

I didn't have a chance to go to my temple, and I will not today. However, I asked a friend this morning. He said the numbers were important in Jewidism (did I spell that corectly?), but he did not know why.

It isn't a party, it is a ritual where the recitation of part of the Torah occurs by the person who just turned 13, or whatever age they decide to get Bar/Bat Mitzvah-ed.

The 18 dollars could resemble The Eighteen Benedictions, which are series of blessings.

is that what happens there? ick! that's not worth $36 or any amount of money. about do it then or not at all, it should be: do it not at all. not ever. never ever ever. that's barbaric and disgusting act which the victim certainly did not ask to have done to him (esp. babies)

dj you're an ~confused man who got mixed up with a common misconception~ they do do that when you're a baby a barmitvah is when you become a man not when they briss you.

-better no DJ ;)

ok, I'm an idiot because I misunderstood the difference between two rituals ::). I guess I have watched to many Mel Brooks movies... thank you for pointing that out. Next time you are mistaken on something I will make sure to do the same for you, but in a nicer tone ;)

sorry DJ no offence made but it pissed me off that arohk used it to make a stupid comment so I called you an idiot not a dumbass, but I'm sorry, you're not an idiot.

oh and 18 is the numerical version of life so in hebrew the number 18 means life so numbers that are multiple of 18 like 36 and so on mean have a good life and as my friend thats jewish and recently had his barmitvah said "the bigger the multiple hte greater your life ;) ;D"

my comments were not stupid at all

anyone who would let his member be mutilated for $36, or any amount of money, surely has serious mental issues and needs psychiatric help

arohk you're a dumbass

A BARMITVAH IS NOT A BRISS AND A BRISS HAPPENS AT BIRTH I think arohk is not navaros, navaros isn't that stupid.

Let me explain some details:

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah must be about within a few weeks of his/her 13th birthday, or older than that.

The important part of the service is the Torah blessing, not the Torah reading.

Rarely do people today become Bar/Bat Mitzvah without having a Torah reading in their service.

People rarely actually read the Torah, they memorize it and use the Torah to keep their place.

Most people also have to chant Haftarah.
