Guest jeromeku Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 Ok so I tried something else today to help prove (or not) the directx 8.0 theory.I went ahead and installed DirectX from the Westwood CD. It asked if I wanted to "reinstall." So I let it, and it finished without problem. I rebooted and fired up dxdiag. File times were now 1999 and up (mostly 2000), but this appears to be the modification time. I try the AGP texturing test and it fails (unfortunately I didn't save it...doh!).Anyway the game locks with this version for me as well. Since I didn't like the idea of the AGP texturing test failing, I reinstalled 8.0a from Microsoft' site. All file stamps seemed to remain newer, and AGP Texturing test worked again. Still the game locked up on me in the first mission after this reinstall as well.So it may not be related to a specific version of DirectX. ------------DirectX files ------------------ddraw.dll: Nyarlathotep Posted July 27, 2001 Author Posted July 27, 2001 Windows ME, game locks up and having directx files older then 2000....great...Identity, same for you as for everyone:1) try the options in this thread (pay attention to the piece about the GeForce drivers !) <==2) Read the FAQ3) contact tech support In the meantime we'll troubleshoot :DNyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 27, 2001 Author Posted July 27, 2001 btw, just to confirm, did you upgrade the VIA chipset ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 27, 2001 Author Posted July 27, 2001 Gone for now, but will be back somewhere in the weekend, surely on Monday !!Nyar...
Guest jeromeku Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 I was not as thorough as I had thought in my last experiment. Through the whole little DirectX experimentation in my last message I forgot to set the CPU Affinity. So I went ahead and tried... guess what... I crash to desktop now instead of locking. This happens in all modes. so now I have an install that appears to not work at all :(.My journey appears to be a tiresome one :/. I may have to do the inevitable.... reinstallation of Windows. *ick*.
Guest alley_cat Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 It seems that the +w did the job. But it didn't help me in the other times I tried using it(even when typing it with a small 'w'), but now it suddenly helps! Maybe it also helpse now because of the new drivers
Nyarlathotep Posted July 27, 2001 Author Posted July 27, 2001 Ok, but try the skirmish mode, see if that works (as for 2 or 3 users now, the lock up appears only to be in campaign mode, but work fine while playing skirmish).Keep us updated with what tech support says !Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 07-27-2001).]
Guest -X-ray Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 Nyar, i've tested a few things today.well, about the DirectX "old" files- it's because we're using Windows98 and you use windows ME.I've also tried to disable one of my RAM chips, but it didn't work as well. I've searched for programs, which i've installed lately and may cause the problem but nothing helped.that's the summerize of today.
Guest -X-ray Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 one more thing Nyar, my RAM chips runs on 133Mhz, is that good? should i decrease it to 100Mhz? and if so, how do i do that?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 Identity, I see you have AMD and VIA. Did you try updating the VIA drivers?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 -X-ray, almost all of todays SDRAM run on 133 MHZ, so there is no need for you to turn it down to 100. The problem lies somewhere else...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 number6, I see you are using voodoo3, but not the latest drivers. What version of the drivers are you using?
Guest Identity Posted July 27, 2001 Posted July 27, 2001 I have updated VIA drivers but have yet to up to audio drivers
Guest mongonel Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 How in the world can you right all that? Do you people have lives?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 This is nice. First I got it to work, and now jeromeku ;)Anyway, I always use Directx from the microsoft site, since it is always the most updated. And I'm going to say it again: It doesn't matter what version the directx files are, as long as their VERSION is identical.About the IRQ, some motherboards (as mine) who have many onboard things, such as a video card, sound card, my old modem, use the same IRQ for all of these, so when I check, I see they all use the same IRQ. But it means nothing. IRQ stopped being a bad sign if 2 devices are using the same IRQ...
Guest -X-ray Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 Nyar, my video card manufacture is ASUS. so, should i go to their site and download this driver:Video Driver : nvdisp.drvDriver Version : 4.13.01.1210?
number6 Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 sanjn, I find it odd that tech support didn't turn you away because you have a K6-III 400Mhz processor. Apparently they have said these sometimes are not compatable, don't ask me why. My main question is why do you have a Geforce 3 installed in a socket 7 motherboard? You are not going to reap the full power of a Geforce 3 in the system you have. You need to get a Athlon or P4 processor and motherboard. The Geforce 3 is going to be waiting on your processor to calculate the geometry all the time, so your performance is going to suck.
Guest LivingForADay Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 Alright Nyar and others, I updated my sound card drivers last night. I had to disable my download accelerator, and wait through an incredibly slow connection, but I did it. The end result! It still freezes when Duke Atreides is attacked by face dancers.Maybe the +w thing?
Guest -X-ray Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 Nyar, i think im getting something wrong here.on www.asus.com they only have drivers for the motherboard. not for the video card...
Guest -X-ray Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 alley_cat, you solved your problem?!?! how? tell me? should i d/l directX from microsoft website?
Guest jeromeku Posted July 28, 2001 Posted July 28, 2001 Duke_leeto & dune01, Try adjusting your AGP Aperature settings in your BIOS. I'm not sure what menu they would be under on your versions, but mine was under "Chipset Features" or something like that. This has been my experience...you set it too low, and risk not being able to switch into higher resolutions for Windows. Set it too high and EB4D would break. --- my experiments ----16mb - has been working for me.32mb - Would hardlock in campaign mode only64mb - Would Crash to desktop.--------------------------I have a 32meg G400 and run directx 8.0a.I'm not sure why my system has been so sensitive to this with EB4D.Bios settings explanations. A nice little section on AGP aperature settings.http://www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guide_02c.htmMy other suggestion if you haven't tried it is to rip all unnecessary hardware out of your system and try the game. Though at this point everyone here may have been down that path :).
