Guest ParaKnowYa Posted August 2, 2001 Posted August 2, 2001 Hi there,I've read almost all posts in this thread but could not yet find a solution for the problem I have which is similar to what was reported by others already. In single player campaign @ random times the game just hangs while music is still playing... Control+Alt+Delete allows me to reboot so this is not a classic hw freeze. The systems this is happening on are:Athlon TB 1.33GHz CAsus A7A266 !(also tested ECS K7S5A)384MB DDR-RamVideoLogic Vivid!XS (Kyro II) 32MB !(also tested GF2, G400Max, Savage3D, Savage4)TerraTec DMX Xfire 1024Dx8.0 finalWinMEAthlon Classic 650MHzAsus K7M256MB SDRamVideoLogic Vivid! (Kyro I) 32MBSBLive! Classic (gold version)Dx8.0 finalWin98For both systems with the different stuff I was using the latest drivers. EVERY other games tested so far (of over 100 games I own for testing reasons and because I collect good ones ;) worked without a single problem so why does Emperor hang? (this goes out to WW)Thanks to all those who give support here and try their best to check what the problem could be but it seems to be bigger than most thought once you check what hardware I already tested to get this fixed.I'll try skirmish BUT note that even if this works without a hang, it does not mean I'm happy with the game because single player campaign is for me, besides multiplayer, the most important part! =)kindest regardsPKY
Guest dune01 Posted August 3, 2001 Posted August 3, 2001 I have upgraded my computer and now I am having worse problems than I was before. I will paste my EA_EAsy.txt and DXDiag results below. The problem that I am having now is that I can start the game and load a level and then the machines freezes, except fot the audio. I can Ctrl-Alt-Delete and restart the machine but that's it. All of the beginning movies play and the level seems to load OK. I am running version 1.07 of E:BFD. I have loaded Max Payne, and I can play it at max settings without any problems. I have also loaded Unreal Tournament and it runs fine.New Machine:Intel D850GBC System BoardIntel 1.7 Ghz256 MB RAM (The RAM came with the processor and is Kingston)Sound Blaster Live X-GamerVisionTek GeForce 3Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI Controller18GB IBM SCSI hard Drive (Plenty of free space)Windows 98 SE----EASy System Summary-------------------------------------- Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce3 Video Driver : nvdisp.drv Driver Version : 4.13.01.1241 Sound Card : Creative SB Live! Guest antonym Posted August 3, 2001 Posted August 3, 2001 I believe that Banshee drivers are a completely different beast from the Voodoo2/3 drivers. At least from the pages I've visited, couple of different sites and it appears that the latest release of the Banshee drivers is 1.04.00 released on 2/9/2000. The Banshee drivers are approximately 2.3MB where the Voodoo drivers are anywhere from 6-10MB, depending on the version. Thanks for delivering the good word to WW Ny. Hopefully they will be able to help some other folks out with the information. Also, I played another mission today without a freeze. BTW, does anyone know what the "+w" command line option for emperor does? Does someone have a list of the options? Thanks everyone!
Nyarlathotep Posted August 3, 2001 Author Posted August 3, 2001 MrShadow, I asked this to someone before, but unfortunately, no reply back on how it went. I do not know if Creative already has a GeForce 3, but what you could try is using that driver. I'm having an Asus GeForce 3 and read the readme file. In the readme it states that you can also use these drivers for GeForce 2 cards. IF you're going to try it, make sure you've got your old drivers at hand, just to make sure if anything goes wrong, you can get back. The latest driver version for my GeForce is 12.60. Try to find out if Creative has a Geforce 3 and try that driver...Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted August 3, 2001 Author Posted August 3, 2001 antonym, I'm glad it works for you now. Have fun ! :Dbtw, I've updated my report with tech support with your story. If I have a reply on the question "How come 1.04 works, but 1.07 doesn't ?" Ill let you and Alley know.Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 08-03-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted August 3, 2001 Author Posted August 3, 2001 nine12, I tried to go to the site you've copied in here, but getting a strange msg about all kinds of possible reasons why it didn't work. I for one wouldn't mind if you copied your report in here :DNyar...
Guest nine12 Posted August 3, 2001 Posted August 3, 2001 I myself use the Xpentor Optimizer Drivers, because they enhance the card for use with D3D.
number6 Posted August 3, 2001 Posted August 3, 2001 alley_cat, I am not going to put up a thread, since I know it will get us nowhere with tech support and I don't want to sound like a whiner. About the 1.04 Voodoo drivers, I wouldn't be so upset about having to use them. I have tried all of the later drivers, including the 1.05 that you have been trying to mess with. Don't waste your time. It seems 3DFX never released a decent set of stable drivers since 1.04. All the newer drivers since 1.04 were supposedly performance tweaking, which is probably the cause of instability, and the newest driver was supposed to add support for the newer features of DirectX8. I think Emperor is one of the few games that take advantage of the new DirectX8 features, but you need a pretty powerful video card to reap the benefits anyway. What you should probably be thinking about is upgrading to a video card that is still supported by the manufacturer. As time goes on, people are going to experience more problems with Voodoo chipset cards. You should be OK with the 1.04 drivers til December 2001.

Guest antonym Posted August 3, 2001 Posted August 3, 2001 Unfortunately, I'm finding that the 1.04.00 drivers are causing problems with other games :( Textures are being displayed inproperly or not at all, graphical garbage/glitches show up, and some things won't run at all. This is very dissapointing.Even though there is a kludged fix available (1.04.00 drivers) I would hardly call it a solution.I have tried to be positive during all of this but I'm very dissapointed. I keep opening my ticket with Westwood, and they keep closing it and sending me the same list of links to their support pages. It doesn't matter how much I explain, how much detail I provide, how nice I try to be, the ticket get's closed and I get the same set of links back to their support page. Let me just say, you are much better off following the message area and relying on your fellow consumer than trying to get anything useful out of the support department at Westwood. I now understand the frustration expressed by so many over the last month regarding Westwood and this game. Let us hope that this is an isolated incident and that it is only a fly on the windshield of an otherwise great gaming company.---One other thing. The irony of this whole thing is that NONE of the set of links, that were sent as the answer to my problem, worked! :O They all give an "error loading page" message! Also, there is still no mention of the solution for Voodoo users in the support database![This message has been edited by antonym (edited 08-03-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted August 3, 2001 Author Posted August 3, 2001 nine12, forgive me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you just run the 3DFX Voodoo drivers ? Can anyone confirm or correct me for that matter ? Nyarlathotep Posted August 4, 2001 Author Posted August 4, 2001 Antonym, the +w will force the game to preload each movie into memory before playing. As far as I can tell from WW tech support answers, they're still investigating the issue about the 1.04 and later drivers for the Voodoo. They've also asked me to give them an update on x-ray's system... because I can't, I'm afraid they will close my case...Alley, could you try to find out what his prob status is ?Nyar...

Guest dune01 Posted August 4, 2001 Posted August 4, 2001 Those are the latest drivers off of VisionTek's website. I have a VisionTek GeForce 3. The latest that they have posted is 12.41. Do you know where I can get other drivers that will work, or do you have any other suggestions?
Guest antonym Posted August 4, 2001 Posted August 4, 2001 number6,I have both of those games and have not had any problem with either running the non beta 1.07.00 drivers. If you want to see something nasty, load up Everquest with your 1.04.00 drivers. It's a frightening thing. Also, I have other recent games that utilize DirectX8 that do not have these problems (NBA Live 2k1, Fallout Tactics, High Heat Baseball 2002, Echelon etc.) just to name a few. I find it hard to believe that Emperor utilizes some features of DX8 that these do not. This is the first time that I've ran into a problem of this degree that a patch, driver update, or simple adjustment would not fix.I understand that 3dfx sold out to NVidia but their cards still remain some of the most popular cards out there in people's machines. The market for these cards is still huge. I would hate to think that companies have just written off this hardware and refuse to try and make their products work with them any longer. That would seem to me to be foolish. The number of posts, describing these problems, would seem to support that theory.Sure I'd like to go get a ELSA Gladiac Ultra GeForce2 or GeForce3. Do I have $300 for a video card right now. Absolutely not :( Ah well, onward and upward :)
number6 Posted August 4, 2001 Posted August 4, 2001 antonym, Have you tried Homeworld with any Voodoo drivers newer than 1.05? The newer drivers cause graphics in that game to flicker quite a bit. Another game, Shogun Total War, does not display rain correctly with any known 3DFX driver. The point I am trying to make is that there aren't going to be any new drivers released to fix any known problems with the Voodoo series video cards. The last driver released back in February this year, is much worse, for me anyway, than the 1.04 drivers. Nyar, I don't think Westwood is going to be able to solve this one. How can they support something that is no longer supported by the manufacturer?
