EMPRWORM'S RIDDLE #3

Grandma's Bizzarre Breakfast

Being the nice, family person that you are, you decide to go Visit your grandmother in northern Siberia for the winter.

One December morning after a particularly heavy snow storm, the power fails (drats!). Fortunately, there is still an old wood stove with which you can prepare your grandmother's breakfast. however, your grandmother has a very very particular way she likes her eggs. She likes a single egg boiled for exactly nine minutes- give or take 2 seconds. Bizzare? Yes. But since you have great respect for her, how can you argue with your grandmother?

You do not have a watch, and all the clocks in the home are electric. So you dig around in some boxes and you are able to find two exquisite hourglasses, able to pricely measure in hand-crafted swiss sand seven and four minutes, respectively.

Your grandmother is hungry. The water is boiling. You go into the living room, you set both of the hourglasses down on a desk - both of them are fully reset. With egg in hand and boiling pot right next to you, let us label this moment as time T0. So, if

Time T0 = NOW, and

Time T1 = Moment you remove the 9 Minute Boiled Egg from the pot,

How quickly using only these two hourglasses can you provide your grandmother with her egg?

In other words, when you pull that egg out of the water after it has boiled for exactly 9 minutes, how much time will have passed between Time T0 and Time T1? (and you will have to explain yourself too! :) )

AGAIN, DONT POST IF ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER PLEASE! Thanks!

[hide]what if you turned them both over at the same time and then once the 4 was done, you turn 7 on its side. then there would be 3 minutes left in the 7 glass. then you take the four and turn that over and tip the 7 again. when the 7 runs out you'll have 1 minute left in the four. flip the 7 and 4 again until the 4 runs out and put the 7 on its side again and you'll have 6. turn the four over again with the 7 and stop the 7 when the 4 is done and you'll have 2 left in the 7. turn the 4 and the 7 again and stop the 4 when 7 is done and you'll have 2 left in the four. so now you have all 7 in the 7 and 2 in the 4. no put hte egg in and turn the 7 over. once that finishes turn the 4 over. once the 2 is up in the 4 take the egg out. i'm not sure if its right but that makes the most sense to me.

so about 23 minutes?[/hide]

confusing, ain't it. i didn't know how else to explain it. sorry. is that right though?

message to ev4:

[hide] you havent answered the question. you need to specify how long that whole process took. First you need to say how much time it takes to boil the egg 9 minutes, then you explain what you did. [/hide]

no. if people dont want the riddles i'll just not do it. its only spam if people dont like them.

it would be a pain to have to scroll through the middle of a thread to find another riddle and then member comments about a riddle will always go to the end of the thread though such comments will be applying to various riddles throughout the thread- highly unorganzied. This means i will not be tossing all the riddles in one thread because i cannot get organization that way.

if the board comes down on them and doesn't want them, ill just simply not post them. no biggie

[hide] Take the seven Wait till its all the way full Then wait till the four hour glass is half way full. Then there you have it just be quick to take the eggs off the stove! [/hide]

I hope i got it!

you didn't solve it because you have no way of knowing how precise halfway full is. You cannot just look at the 4 halfway and say "oh thats EXACTLY 2 minutes". You are making a "guess" as to when the 4 is exactly halfway. You must have PRECISE and ACCURATE measurements- no guessing. So you didn't get it.

keep trying!

Hmm fun :)

[hide]Start both. When the 4 finishes, turn the 7 on the side, giving it 3. Then flip them again, and when the 3 of 7 is done, put 4 on the side. You have 1 on the 4. Flip them again, and put the 7 on the side when the 1 of 4 is done. You have 6 of the 7. Flip again, and when the 4 is done, you have 2 in the 7. But you also have 5 on the other side. So, flip the 4 and when that is done flip the 7 with the 5 on top and you have 9! This should be right, now the total would be 21 minutes right? Hope I got this right, took me awhile to figure out what I was suppose to do lol[/hide]

he basically did the same as me except

[hide]i sent the 2 from the 7 over to the 4 b/c it was the first thing that came to mind. i just thought that the 7 plus a 2 would make an even 9. i didn't think of doing the 4 and then flipping it again with 5 :- gj acriku ;D [/hide]

[hide]Yeah I know eva, thanks for the idea, but really, using that method (waiting, putting on side, flip, repeat) it is only one way to do it, that I've found. :) [/hide]

Well, looks like the worm has put out a stumper!

Yes, Acriku thought of a clever mod from yours. BUT, you can get lower than 21 minutes!

I know of 2 different ways that are lower.

there might even be more.

so keep trying!

me so happy i put up a good riddle. 8) maybe it will even last until tomorrow?

not precise enough desert eagle. how will you know when it is exactly half way? How do you know that there isnt a few extra grains of sand on one side?

But you did say it is 9 minutes plus or minus a few seconds.
