I think Cromwell should have been higher as he brought democracy to these shores. I would have voted for Churchill over the others though. My order of the top ten chosen would have been would be:

1 Churchill

2 Nelson

3 Cromwell

4 Elizabeth I

5 Newton

6 Darwin

6 Shakespeare

7 That enginer guy I forget his name

8 John Lennon

9 Diana

Can't remember the other one

Hey, you forgot Tolkein

7th guy is Rowan Atkinson the MR.Bean

If it were not for Edmund Blackadder, Britain as we know it may have been very different - Richard III would not have been killed looking for a horse, Henry VII would not have inherited the throne after Prince Edmund poisoned the house of Lancaster (including, eventually, himself), Prince Regent George would not have avoided being disgraced bt William Pitt the Younger, and later killed by a fake cannon, and secretly replaced by his butler.

Don't you think now is english monarchy, er, anachronic?

What does that mean? The closest words I can think of are 'anarchy' and 'autocratic.' And it's a British Monarchy now, not English.

In that case the British Monarchy is dying because it's trying to get out of the past. Every time someone tries a new 'modern image' it fails miserably because the Monarchy is SUPPOSED to be traditionalist. What with all the rumours and deaths and democracy spreading I don't think it will last for very long. Even though it has very little power, people still want rid of it.

Pity...

Not anymore. But it used to. And it's traditional, a lot of us are traditionalists. Besides, even though it drains cash, does little and is exempt from most laws, it would be difficult to remove it.

I don't like the idea of living without the monarchy... politicians would have all the power and everyone knows most of them are slime. (I'm told I'd make a good MP).

The monarchy serves as a sort of rallying point and diplomatic flag. If you see what I mean. The Queen unites the Commonwealth (remember, she's Gob's Queen, too), and her presence could help in things like major summits, wars, etc.

You sound like you're offering some of ours as spare.

Well that's what they used to do before... No heir to the throne? No problem! Get one from another country! That's how England ended up with King James VI and how Britain ended up with King George I.

Ok Edric, would you like Prince Charles to go over there and sit on a throne? We've got some spare royalty although recently they've been dropping off like flies...

That was a joke. I somehow got the idea you're against autocratic monarchy. ::)
