As some of you know I've been having some problems with my connection, or is it my connection and not somebody else's.

I have been taking flak from all sides regarding my dropping from games - it's a genuine affair - not quitting, just either being booted out or dropped by WOL straight into the lobby. There is no set pattern to it, it just happens too often for my liking, and of course, for my buddies who are showing controlled restraint.

So, to the nitty gritty. I have 512k pipe - cable. OS is Xp pro, with 1 gig of memory, and a nice big 100 gig hard drive. The pc is 2.2 ghz proc, with nvidia geforce3 card, and yes, my setts are on low - 800 x 600 with 16 bit graphics and most of the level indicators to the left.

What causes me to drop?

I often reboot to make sure it is not me but with XP pro this neednt be the cure as it intelligently clears the cache anyway. Any advice?

maybe its XP that causes the prob...... ??? install ur previous windows and see if it changes something in Emp.

Actually i know jack shit about comps but i hope it works ;)

I got XP pro aswell, and im experiencing none of those problems.

Besides the normal crashes everybody has so now and then.

My comp is an AMD Athlon XP, 1800++ (1.6 Ghz) 60 gig HD, Nvidia Geforce3 TI200 and 512 MB memory. Graph setts are 1024x768 and other setts on medium. Graphics quality is on 32 bit(that explains the beautiful screenies I always shoot ;D).

And anybody who plays regularly with me know I *never* lag.

Except when there has been too much chit chatting prior to the game, in that case there rests nothing else than a full reboot.

So it's not a given fact that medium graph setts lag.

The more strange it is that you, who runs obviously a more avanced system than I do, get these dropouts.

And I know nobody else who has this problem as consistent as you do. I mean, 8 out of 10 games with you it happens. That's absurd. I can think of nothing else than a error between WW and your connection. And dont ask me what that could be, since I barely know how to rip music from the net and start up my Emperor game ;D

Ok,

My first day with computers. I got windows 98.I thought IT WAS GREAT! then windowsME came out, WinME was full off bugs/glitches and such, so.. BACK 2 win98 then in late 1999 i got Windows2000, It was Great it Never crashed, All of my game drivers supported Win2k and i never had a software nor hardware problem at al.

********************************************************************

Then i got Windows XP:

Day 1,

I was happy with xp altough it toke alot of space on my harddisk.

i left my computer on that night, next day it crashed.I thought.. well OK shit things can happen.i rebooted, And went 2 the store, this time it glitched on startup so i had 2 pull the power Out.

Day 2,

Because i had windows xp, and deleted al my other filez on my hardrive, I wanted to download all my other software like antivirus programs DiVx players etc... Thing is, nothing worked, nothing was XP supported (OK things have changed since then but still..) so i sorta couldn't do anything, just some games that supported windows like microsoft (DUH).

Day 3,

I was playing a game mechworrior 4, after a short wile, it turned out my memory was Full and i had 2 restart, which is bullshit cause i have 1024 MB ddr Ram and my comp had an uptime of 2 hours,So i was like WTF this never happend to me before with any other OS.Cause most OS automaticly delete the used memory.

Day 4,

I started up.

i went 2 the bathroom toke a shower, went back 2 my comp and it froze, Then i went crazy i was so sick of that stupit winXP,I Formatted my hardisk and Replaced winXP with Win2K.

here are my computer specs :

Intel Pentium 4 .

2.4 Ghz.

1024 Mb DDR Ram. (333 Mhz)

80 gig Hardisk.

52* speed cd drive.

NVidia Geforce titanium 4 128 Mb.

So this couldn't be the hardware problem, I had everything updated including all my software drivers.I'm not saying Xp sucks just because it doesn't work here, but i have been on many Newsgroups about Opperating systems and most people say windows XP crashes often and has many bugs and comes up with to many errors when ur running Big programs that Require alot of memory etc..,Now most people really like **WinDowsMe** and win2K although WinMe crashes to much for my likes.

Good day

Perhaps XP is better on digitally signed computers - i.e xp pre-installed.

Your problems point towards most who have followed the upgrade route regardless of era. It's always a good year or so after the new OS release does the problems start to go away.

I have found XP really stable - I'd potentially lost 40 gigs of data a month ago - but its rollback feature is a genuine boon. And microsofts promise of locked memory appears to be genuine with XP - I have never had a crash caused by a program whereas I had to manually turn off the machine to restart.

I knew that if I had the same problem with other OS's I'd certainly still be here re-installing all my data 1 month down the road.

So it seems that all the problems with my connectivity points towards to my ISP.

Well i doubt u don't have Any problems with xp at all, Although Win2k doesn't have any errors as well, i'd say u schould try win2k for a while, just download it from mIRC. or kazaa whatevr, it's much faster then xp No matter what kind of computer u have, cause xp needs 180 Mb Ram to startup at 100%, win2k only needs 8 Mb Max. cause it was disigned to startup quickly and run programs really fast etc.... anyway, Goodluck with XP,
