With "Orange" they would mean Orange Order from Ireland. Maybe Herbert tought they will become most powerful protestantic church and O.C. Bible was a compromise between Roman Catholics and Orangists.

Geez, in the history, Orange Order was such a racist things (well, I mostly know the Orange Order of Canada...) ... Just hoping that herbert wasn't associated with them...

I'm sure Herbert was not a racist, he is taking words and texts from the arabic culture, I don't think he would do that if he were a racist, he would then think the arabic language was "ugly" and stuff... On the other side, he took the arabic words because the arab world was like "outside", and he felt many did not know how to pronounce the words and stuff... depends on which perspective you're looking from...

The OC bible was the result of a bunch of representatives from almost all religions write a new book together. I have not a clue why it is "orange", unless it really is orange (colour).

Anyone heard of the Orangemen (Orange Order, not racist, or canadian) of (Northern) Ireland? They are an anglican (protestant) church who often go marching around Belfast, notably down the Catholic area called Garvachy road.

Well, the Orangemen of Canada are a kind of district of the Orangemen of Ireland... Those who, seems from my point of view, too much imperialist, trying to make protestant church more powerful by taking down christianism..

I think Herbert was a hippy, personally. :) All this talk about drugs that make you see through time and shit, make sense of the universe, see your destiny, etc.. Spice Melange? Bah, he's basically describing speed, crank, coke, meth, what-have-you. The guy was probably coked/shermed out of his mind when he wrote Dune in the 60s.
