Emperor Harkonnen
how come they pronounce dune, like [dun] and not [djun]???[djun] is the correct way to say it
Acriku
Djun? Like d-jun? Or dj-un? My opinion is that it was a book with a desert in it, deserts have dunes, it's called Dune, hey why not? ;)
Emperor Harkonnen
yes I thought so, and the pronounciation is kinda difficult to tell since I don't got fonetic letters on my keyboard. but you probably know how to pronounce it. Timenn
Hmm, the lexicon says it's like this: Djune. Not D(no ymbol between in pronoucation)uneBut it can be a sort of accent, pronouncing the second one. And maybe it makes it that way, that both ways are correct.I think Nema knows more about this.Cause English is a horrible language qua pronouncation ;)
nemafakei
Dune should be pronounced to rhyme with "you". As in the sand dune... but some americans call a sand dune a saynd doon. A doon is a scottish word, I think. Can't remember what it means at the moment, though.
Acriku
That's because dune was adopted as an english word with english pronounciations, DOOOOOOOOON. English version has no accented vowel or consenant in Dune, so depends on where you learned to talk.
nemafakei
No accent? There is definitely stress on the dipthong.
Acriku
Aside from normalcy I meant. You see OO in Dune in many other words like doom or soon or prune.
AlteaDeo
I've always said it like Dyoon myself.... And as for french way of saying it, let's say that it's better :) No 4 way for telling it, you say it like it is written :P
Gobalopper
Heh, whenever I tell someone I run a Dune website they almost always reply with, "Doom? Ya that was a great game." :)
Edric O
I know those moments... when you feel like banging your head against a wall. ;DAnyway, I always pronounce it Djoon myself... But don't they speak about Dune and Arrakis in the cutscenes in Emp? And the miniseries... and the Lynch movie... I always thought they pronounce it correctly. Then again, they also say "Atreyades" in the cutscenes sometimes. :P
Caid Ivik
[Du:n]
Timenn
Eh, that's different per lexicon (Du:n), and we found out that this is a typical English/American problem. :)Both ways are accepted. But Djune is better :)
Caid Ivik
How is slovak language easy! Long live phonetical system! In slovak dune is "Duna", pronounciated as [duna].
Timenn
I doubt that it is easier then Italian though :)
Edric O
I still think Romanian is best. Each letter has a single way in which it can be pronounced, no matter what. You don't have to remember any rules. :) It's a lot like Italian, too. (I don't know a single word of italian, but I can understand most of what Italians are saying thanks to my knowledge of Romanian and French)Well, it makes sense that each of us thinks his native language is best, doesn't it? :)
Emperor Harkonnen
I looked the word up in my dictionary and it tells me [dju:n]and that is the correct way to pronounce it, don't argue with that if u don't know fonetic writing
Timenn
Yes, I found that too (what is your native language, Thorup?)And I'm dutch. But I don't like it in all ways. Mostly I try to read/listen to think in their original language
nemafakei
Hmm. I'm learning Italian, then I might go onto Romanian, if I can find a dictionary.
Timenn
::: How many languages do you know, Nema? Thanks to my school I can only English, and read some German and French. Oh yes, I can do Greek :)
Emperor Harkonnen
I'm norwegian, but the fonetic writing is international and works for all languages. it contains latin and greek letters(maybe more who knows?) there are thousands or hundreds of signs in the fonetic.
nemafakei
Phonetic. And not theousands... a little under 100, I think.English, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek (ancient), Linear B (not exactly a language - a different way of writing greek), Italian (started recently).Yet to go: Romanian (sounds interesting), Possibly russian. Maybe dutch, but certainly before any other Germanic language.Arabic and hebrew also look fun.
Timenn
Hmm, you really should dutch. It's a challenge :)
Emperor Harkonnen
I am learning russian, you should also do so nema. it is easy in some ways, but hard when it comes to verbs.
