Timsvs
basically i just wanna start a discussion about Terminator..and how it's relevant to DUNE..with the bultarian jihad [or however u spell it]..........
Acriku
Well, I can't think of any similarities. ???
Vanguard3000
War against machines is a fairly common subject. I think there are many better examples of humans fighting machines, or machines ruling over humans. Terminator was more about preventing the creation of SkyNET and the terminators, IIRC. quoudam72
The Bulterian Jihad was to end the "thinking machines". Terminator, well the machines already have taken over, Skynet launched the nuclear missiles that leave mankind at the brink of destruction. Maybe the two can be compared but only because both are wars in Mankind vs. machines (AI).
Acriku
Yeah two different outcomes, if mankind didn't create the time machine. Machine was kicking butt, too. Such a shame. Just kiddin
evilbaronatreides
Man vs Machine....i doubt that a stale mate is gonna happen here. The matrix is the only other example i can think of, but again the machines have already taken over.
quoudam72
Well you could compare those two, Terminator and Matrix, because some form of nuclear warfare causes mankind to lose to the machines. In Terminator the machines take over and use the nuclear power themselves, in the Matrix the humans use the power in an attempt to destroy the machines power source, but the machines start to use the humans as their power source. With the Bulterian Jihad mankind is heavily depend on the "thinking machines" until the human race starts to see where it can lead them. Timsvs
well the humans do get into the mainframe of skynet..and destroy the matrix in it...that's why the terminator goes through...but i da know, tell me of some other examples of MAN VS MACHINE? Vanguard3000
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, by Harlan Ellison (EXCELLENT STORY!!!)Blade RunnerSome of Isaac Asimov's books are about that type of thing as well. There are more, but none are coming to mind at the moment. quoudam72
All the ones you mentioned are some of the best man vs. machine stories.
Vanguard3000
I agree. Ellison is probably my favourite author, save Frank Herbert. I love his painfully blunt writing style (i.e. "Jelly for God's sake beans!" - 'Repent, Harlequin' Said the Ticktockman)
Sardauker-Kirov
Man vs Machine.... Hmmmm in the other Hand, The Machine's can easily kill and crush a human with their Bare metal handsAt the other right hand :PThe humans can maybe Malfunction the machines and destroy it, Although if their skill level is "Hard" Hahaha :)
evilbaronatreides
I never really thought as Blade Runner as a man vs machine movie. I always thought it as a movie that questions what qualifies as humanity.
Vanguard3000
EvilBaron: that's true also, but if I'm not mistaken, the Replicants were machines, but they were so detailed they were almost like clones or synthetic humans.Almost all "man vs. machine" stories question the quality of human life and existance. That's one of the reasons I like that sort of thing.
