who finished single-player already?

who's gonna play multiplayer? and did you play quake 3 multiplayer/mods then, too or are you goint to start your "quake online career" with brandnew quake 4?

and who played the first 2 quake parts back then?

questions, questions... give me answers

for me:

1. didn't even start it, but will this weekend - and then of course finish it, too (hope the laptop ist fast enough)

2. I will go for multiplayer - but this will take some time as I won't have a pc to run it on till ... sometime in the future :)

3. I played some quake3 & cpma... but I'm not that good like "real" quakers - cause CS has always been the game I'm best at

4. yes, I also played the firt 2 quake parts... so I'm very exited about the 4th part cause it starts where quake 2 ended (that's what I heard and will see tomorrow later when the game arrives)

Back on track... I've got my hand on Q4. MAN, IT'S GREAT!!! I mean it has the same engine as Doom3 but the action is great. I really like it. Now, I hope I'll be able to play it with someone in multiplayer.

All in all, I think Quake 4 had the potential to become much better than it did, I give you that.

The gameplay was linear, there are no choices and the game feels like it goes by too fast. Damn it, I want to see the Strogg world, I want to see their civilization, not just their battlemacines. If you "talk" to one of the marines the first time you're on the commanding ship, you can hear that he says something like: "I heard the Stroggs were some kind of superweapon created by another civilization". Use it! Deepen the story! Hell, they already agreed that this should be the continuation of Quake 2, so why not expand the universe even more?

I was disappointed in the Strogg-transformation too. Wow, you get another interface colour, and you run faster. That's about it. They (the developers) said that "when you become a Strogg, you'll be able to understand what they are saying", but the only thing you'll understand is the speaker saying "alert, intruders" all over again. You don't even understand what the physical enemy is saying (the "things" you shoot at). So, they would have done better with either erasing the whole Strogg-conversion thing, or improved it largerly.

I also think that Quake 4 suffered a little from the (what I call it) "Invisible War syndrome" - which is that the game is up and running, getting fixed and built and so on, but then they realize something (like, releasing it just in time for christmas, or the president's birthday, or whatever) and then they finish the game in one month and release it. There is just too little! It was like they took the Doom 3 engine, added some stuff, changed the enemies and the weapons, and then released it (oh, wait, that's what they did....).

Of course, there are some positive things in this game too. The first thing is clearly seen by everyone: the graphics. I, at least, think they used the Doom 3 engine to it's maximum capability. Everything is alive, everything moves, the detail is, well, unreal. I also want to comment on the background - which they did good also. It must be one of the first games in which the background is now integrated with the game. Instead of the same old dead buildings, they are now flashing with lights (well, not the buildings, but... uh, just check the tower-levels) and spit out gas, which improves the feeling of a bigger world than there really is. Very good, more of this in the future.

But all in all - it's a good shooter to start with if you haven't played that sort of game before (and if you have what it takes to run the game). For the rest of you... uh, well FEAR might be pretty good...

Quake 4 is doomed with a: C

+Amazing graphics

+Living backgrounds

+Free of bugs

-Thin story

-Linear gameplay

-Nothing new

-Short!

(PS: I just rock as a reviewer, don't I?)

nuvo u are kidding aren't u?

ever heard of the right click function in windows which then says "save image as..." ?  ::)

as for quake 4: what did you expect? a super hyper single player? okay, quake 1 and 2 were awesome back then but look at alle the people playing quake 3 - they don't need a single-player, they just are happy (some are not) about an "updated" version of their beloved multiplayer game. most (really good) quakers I know didn't even play the single-player yet and I doubt they will do so...maybe if they don't have internet for a short while or so.

but if you take it from the single-player view you are right: they really could have made a bit more out of it. the game is way to boring till you get stroggified and finally get some speed into your gameplay. but from this time on it becomes boring in the levels. anyway I liked it, was good for having a short time of fun and I think the multiplayer will once again become a milestone in action online gaming fps.

btw: another good thing about the quake 4 release: they released the quake 3 source code before and now modders will make much more interesting q3 mods... a pity f***** ea games doesn't do the same for the emperor fan community.

Yes, I forgot to add that id Software has a history of wonderful engines or whatever you may call it, and graphics too. The only games I know that can't be traced back to the Quake engine or some of the Quake source code is Thief, Thief 2 and System Shock 2 which are all built by the DARK engine (developed by the eternal Looking Glass).

And I think id Software made it clear, at least through their games, that story and consistence isn't the strong point in their development. Of course, my perspective on games are in require of story and consistency - which makes me one of the few singleplayers who's left (but I do play multiplayer with my friends when they have time).

But let's look at it one more time: Doom 3 basically did what Quake 4 could not do. It introduced new graphics, alongside an interesting and very scary story. So, we can state that Quake 4 could not possibly try to create a whole new engine. The multiplayer was improved from Doom 3, where a maximum of 4 people could play. So, what is there left to do? They have their grapics and they have the improved multiplayer. Why not consentrate on singleplayer too? I'd understand if there was no Doom 3, and that they decided to go for Quake 4 instead, but this is not the case.

But my decision stands. It is a good shooter, the levels are awesome, the action is hot - but really, there is nothing new.

games are like movies; short term full-pumped action. And then you go on do your stuff.

Also, why would one care about a full fledged , deepening, story? I want to play a game! If i need a story, i grab a book! :P

you know how old quake 3 is? and it's still the no.1 action shooter. counterstrike (not css) is no.1 multiplayer shooter but it's not the action like quake 3 so it doesn't count as action multiplayer. but cs is also alive since june or july 1999 (ah what a great time) and is still played on every cpl, wcg, eswc and a lot of amateur and professional leagues all over the world and donated with a lot of cash. okay... most games are like you say, but to come back to quake4... why should they care too much about single player? every quake 3 player (and quake 3 is pure online gaming cause he single player is only fraggin bots instead of online human enemies) buys it and wants to play online. like I said, I know a lot of (very good) quake gamers who didn't even play the single player but just bought it to game the next quake generation online. It was amazing for me when it became clear that q4 featured a single player... most quake gamers just had the multiplayer in mind till the first news about the sp came up.

imo, single player IS the game.Multiplayer is simply killing each other in that virtual world with those particular weapons and maps.

For quake 3 and Unreal Tournament, they focussed on multiplayer only, so they turned the world 'upside down'.

Ofcourse industries focus on multiplayer, as thats where the most money is. Nobody cares about single player, as it seems, but i think a lot of people still want a good single player game.

What suprises me, is that there is no 'cooperative game only'. We have single player, multiplayer. But a game that must bew played cooped, that is not even there, and its easily done technically. (ow, and don't come with Splinter Cell where they have missions packed to do this, i mean a true single/coop player story line ofcourse ;))

Pitty how money controls the flow, but in the end, costumers control the money.
