Factories

Is there any way to disable factories?  I'd prefer to play the game without the armored units.  What would be even better would be if there is a way to make the factory but disable its ability to make units.  I want to be able to make air units.

You talking about playing online agaist humans or the AI? 

You can't disable the AI factory unless you kill it, and then you would have to kill his constuction yard to keep him from rebuilding the factory.

Playing online against other people you can only agree with the other players not to make a factory.    If you still wanna make air units then you would have to agree that you can make a factory but not use it.

There is not way to just plain out disable a factory.  You just have to make an agreement with other people to not build or use it and don't allow the AI to make one.

Gah! I was hoping there'd be a way to simply disable factories in the program itself so that neither myself or the AI could make tanks and such.  I was thinking there might be a mod, map editing program, etc that might do that.  As I'm sure you know, in the books one didn't use armored units on Arrakis because the climate tended to make them unusable. Only spice harvesters and aircraft were used.

Besides...I really enjoy the infantry only scenarios that come with the game. :)

Well, you can always play an infantry war online with someone.

You could always edit the rules file, and make all the factory units take exceptionally long to build.

I haven't played against other people yet. Don't know why I haven't, seems like that would be fun. And yes, simple solution: just agree not to use the factory to make armored units!  *smacks self on the head*

I tried to go into multiplayer.  I thought there was a website where folks went to hook up and play but it appears that you have to have a prearranged "date" with someone to do that.

So I can edit my rules file?  Sweet. If I can make it so that it takes 6 hours to make a tank that would pretty much fix it if I want to play the AI.  How do I edit the rule file? Honestly, I'm afraid of screwing something up :D

Very cool, thats what I had in mind.  I downloaded the realisticdune file but I can't open it. Get a popup saying its an invalid application for win32...or something. same happened with the others.  Apparently, I'm doing something wrong.  I've never attempted to modify a game before. Is there something I'm missing?

if u have xp, or at least xp pro, u dont need winzip. xp is able to do it.

Both Home and pro have a built in ZIP extractor.  Just right-click and select "Extract all..." or something like that.

well. me too i was new to dune multy player actuly i played the ai for long long time . just like you do. well aris you wont belive what i found on line. the human player was a very strange and surprising to me.

offcorse i dont mean that i was expecting my self to just win evry one and be the baron. but what was realy strange that you can find players

  about 100 times more stronger than the ai. its like choosing levle 1000 on the skill obtion menu . it dose sound strange right? if u dont belive me just whait and see

Yeah, I fully expect to get my butt kicked all the way around Arrakis and back once I start playing against real people.  I've played against humans in other games..., Starfleet Command, Starcraft and AoE2 and I usually start off on the bottom half of the bell curve :D.  But I'll catch up.  Oh yes...I will have my revenge! ;)

For those that haven't tried it, I highly recommend it.  Its great.

well i have an idea for you. you can use the ai apoolyon patch ok? now the ai will be stronger and it will make more than 1 infantry bulding and sard and so maybe 2 or three of eatch.then u can make air units and hit his factorys and construction yeards .now the ai have 3 refynerys and only infentry buildings and will spend all money on infentry.
