I recently found an excellent resource website for European politics. It is a database containing all election results for all European countries over the past 50 years:

www.parties-and-elections.de

For anyone interested in the political landscape of Europe, this is the place to go. Note, however, that election results may not always show the general feelings of the population - because a lot of people don't vote.

I'll make this topic sticky, and we can also use it for discussing European elections as they happen (we have quite a few of them coming up this year).

So, votes in Slovakia:

voted: 714 508 (16,9% - percentually lowest ratio in Europe), counted 701 595

SDKU: 119 954 (17,1%, 3 seats, liberal democrats)

HZDS: 119 582 (17%, 3 seats, nationalists)

Smer: 118 535 (16,9%, 3 seats, social democrats)

KDH:  113 655 (16,2%, 3 seats, christian democrats)

SMK:  92 927 (13,3%, 2 seats, hungarian party)

from other parliamentar parties, here unsuccessful - ANO: 4,7% (liberal democrats), KSS: 4,6% (communists), SF: 3,3% (liberal democrats), SNS: 2% (nationalists), HZD: 1,7% (social democrats)

Well, voters in the US have to choose between 2 parties that are almost the same. Voters over here have to choose between 3 or 4 parties that are almost the same... (at least that's the situation in Romania; I don't know about Slovakia)

Well in Italy there was a 75% turnout and 80% in Malta. In Italy so many people voted because it's considered a foretaste for the national elections. I don't know about Malta though.

Remember that these are European elections. General election turnouts tend to be much higher. Anyway, voters in North America have a 0% turnout for European elections...

The amazing thing about this year's European elections is the fact that all the countries of Europe had only one thing in common: The ruling party lost the elections. In countries currently ruled by the Left, the Right won. In countries currently ruled by the Right, the Left won. Everywhere, the government lost and the opposition won. The fact that this holds true regardless of what kind of party is in power shows that the differences between the main political parties of Europe have dissapeared almost completely. Basically, all the parties follow the same center-right agenda - and they all failed miserabely in the eyes of the general population.

So what does this mean for the future? Well... I have no idea. But I suppose the people will eventually get tired of swapping identical governments and something will happen. Perhaps some of the minor parties will experience amazing growth in the coming years.

Let's hope the US will follow the trend this year  :)

Our goverment will vote for kerry I just found this on the internet ( dutch so I'll translate)

If our geverment would have a say in this race the results would be evidentual (?) Kerry would win 77 out of 137 officials questioned want kerry as the new president only 15 would vote for Bush (!)

:O  ::)

Both Bushes had, Clinton too. Effect is another thing, of course we wouldn't commit a suicide like allowing Ottomans to swarm us again. Perhaps if they would return Hagia Sophia  ;D

The EU considers human rights issues to preclude Turkey's entrance. This is mostly why Bush sees nothing wrong with the application.

We all have stances on what the US should do, fair enough if the Americans have an opinion on what the EU should do.

What we think about others says a lot about ourselves.

We had presidents elections yesterday

Results of exit-pol are 54% Yushenko 43%Yanykovich

But official results are about 3% win of Yanykovich

Help us to save our democracy and right to vote!

Our government and president had no right to do that!

They hope to steal our freedom!

We suspect them of treason people
