I think its important to have a thread to have to point at for people who are pondering the great questions that crops up time and time again in this forum.

Posted

  • Atheism: The Case Against God
    George H. Smith
  • The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold
    Acharya S
  • The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design
    Richard Dawkins
  • A Devil's Chaplain: Reflections on Hope, Lies, Science, and Love
    Richard Dawkins
  • Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheist
    Daniel Barker
  • Why I Am Not a Christian: And Other Essays on Religion and Related Subjects
    Bertrand Russell

Oh, and for a good book on dreams and their realization:

  • The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream
    Paulo Coelho

Dust Scout is totally right about His Dark Materials. Pullman is awesome.

Unless either of you have read in great length/depth the works of the other side on a fairly regular basis, I think you folks might be guilty of severe one-sidedness.

  • + His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
    + Sophie's world - Jostein Gaarder
+ The Communist Manifesto - Karl Marx
+ The Prince - Nicolo Machiavelli

No, I haven't read all of them, but I figure they're sensible reading and I plan to get around to it soon. :)

Well, if you want the best from both sides, then choose...

pro

Maimon: Guide for the perplexed (More ha Nevuchim), Buber: Me and You, Eckhard: anything

contra

Schopenhauer: Parerga und Paralipomena, Kant: Critics of pure thinking, Nietzsche: La gaya scienza

I would wager that few people change their mind about God simply from reading a book unless they were reading it with an open mind.

its highly unlikely that anyone on this forum has an open mind regarding the subject-  everyone posting their books will probably not care nor read anyone else's books.

therefore my recommendation will be:

Read emprworms posts.  ;D

true most people wont change their minds.... but this thread isnt for people who have already made their minds up (not trying to convert ideologs).... this thread is for people still deciding. (aka on the fence)... However if you want to quote yourself as an author.... then Edit your post empworm

beh, ideologs trying to convert eachother with their attempt at showing books that they probably havent read, but just heard reviews on to sound intelligent.lol

There is a lot of hot air blown in fed2k lately, and it seems that the rift between sides just is growing too large, and I am not the only one who agrees with this.

sorry gunwounds, but my thread isnt destructive at all, it is just a statement that seems true. There have been no posts to follow it except empr's so I dont see a major problem with it. It isnt a direct attack towards you man, so dont take it personally. It is just a statement that does not break any rules. If it means that much than I might as well delete it, but I think that it is in bad taste to tell me to do so.

TMA read my post above yours and then re-read your first sentence...nobody is trying to convert an ideolog....and personally i dont care if these people havent read the books or not... Dustscout said he hasnt read them yet but that DOESNT matter.... i would just like this thread to be a compilation of good literature.... is that so wrong?

But like i said please dont comment in this thread.. i want people to be able to easily see the books without having to sift thru a bunch of comments....

I very highly recommend reading "When life is over" by Rick Jones.

Or if you have an open mind and are more a nerd like me. Watch the first free video at drdino.com under "Downloads" It only lasts about an hour. Its defintely worth it.
