Hey, I'm in the middle of building my new computer, and I was wondering whether or not the new Athlon 64 was worth its $500. I saw a sale from Cheap Guy's which had it for half, so maybe it'd be worth that. Anybody with experience with this new chip?

I have experiance with the server version in a dual setup. . .the only thing I can say about them that they run database applications really fast. . ;D

If you run the aplications build for it, it's well worth it. But for gaming for example, it won't make any difference and IMHO you'd be better off, although maybe more expensive, with a Intel.

Hmm, well I've been thinking about this alot too and I found out that the 3400+ 64 is actually a little faster then then 3.2, also the benchmarks were for 32 bit apps so in the future it could be well worth it when the 64 bit app come out...(the benchmarks i saw were at tomshardware.com btw)

Oh and there is a 64 bit Win Xp btw which sounds pretty good...

I never said Windows XP wouldn't work on Athlon64. I said that the 64-Bit version of Windows XP does not work for Athlon64. The 32-Bit version of Windows XP (ie. Home and Pro) does however, which is what they are selling with the PCs.

But this of course, does not use the CPUs to their full 64-bit potential.

So if you run a 64 bit processor on a 32 bit system, will it actually be that much faster that a 32 bit processor of the same clock speed?

It might run slightly faster, but nothing significant. i.e. A 64-bit processor at 3000 Mhz would run a 32-bit app at the same speed of say a 3100 Mhz 32-bit processor.
