I've restarted a couple times, unplugged and re-plugged my speakers.

Tehre is just no sound no matter what I do.

Realplayer and one of those games that come free with windows98 plus say that the sound card is in use by another application, but I'm not useing anything that makes sound

Figures this happens 30 seconds after nyar goes offline....

Same message. They arn't working or are in use by another program. And I've got nothing running that would be suing them.

It plays stuff from the CD player, but nowere else.

Windows media player says it can't conect the pins.

Music jukebox says it does not support wave files.

Realplayer says an application is already using my soundcard.

MSN says the same.

Any game I try says the same.

My roommate's spent 2 hours on this and can't figure out what it is.

He says that my only options are

1) Burn every music/video file I want to play and play the through the CD player

2) Take it in to a shop to get it fixed.

Sorry about that :-

Try pressing ctrl - alt - del just once. End all programs except Systray & Explorer.

Now try the sound again. If that doesn't work, try re-installing your sound card drivers.

Let me know if it fixes it.

Yeah, it must be a software problem. Because like you said the CD-player can still get sound to work, and since the CD-player is connected directly to your sound card, instead of using all kind of drivers.

yeach.you not need format c: try reinstall CD-player and soundcard. if soundcard has been reinstalled , install better wersion of CD-player of same version. and if dont work, buy other sound-card..or install newest CD-player

I've already tried shutting allt he background programs down, I've tried safe mode, and I've re-installed the drivers a bunch of times.

yh. you tried to reinstall evrything? all items about soundcart, and CD-player. if problem return again, buy more RAM memory to computer or the machine must be better, some sound cards dont work on old computers,

or install another cd-player, other developer and other version, sound card: buy new or install newest drivers to old sound card...

dont have more ideas.

If you go to start => settings => Control panel => system => Device manager, do you see anything next or behind your soundcard (exclamation point or question mark) ?

Another thing you could try, is to there remove your soundcard and restart your system. If it reboots, it should find your sound card and re-install it.

Power down your pc,remove your soundcard power back up again.Power down and re-seat your soundcard,re-boot.

Windows should now detect your soundcard.

Re.install the drivers for it.

Just a thought double click on the little speaker Icon in your taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

Check if the line out or Wav sliders have a tick in the mute boxes at the bottom of the controls window.

If you don't have an Icon, click on Start, accessories, entertainment and open the speaker Icon , check about the mute sliders as described earlier.

No.

My soundcard is built into my mainboard.

No.

Nyar means that you have to remove the sound card in terms of software. Go to Control Panel - System - (Hardware tab?) - Device Manager

And there you must be able to "remove" the sound card. I don't know how to do that part. But Nyar was meaning something like that

Have you done a thorough scandisk?

Yes.

"MMSYSTEM004 The specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again."

No, I posted the errors earlier in the thread.

Windows media player says it can't conect the pins.

Music jukebox says it does not support wave files.

Realplayer says "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it."

MSN says the same.

Any game I try says the same.
