when I was in elementary school, I had only seen one black person in my life, and two or three asians. This might sound like a weird, but it really does show something in what I am trying to say. After moving to lakewood, an area near Tacoma washington, I suddenly went through a huge culture shock. About 40 percent of the people living there were minorities, especially in the place where I lived which was a huge apartment complex. Most of the minorities were Americans of african descent. At the start it was all kinda weird frankly. From only seeing one black person in real life to seeing many black people all around it was strange. After about three days though that feeling went away. It isnt racism at all, because I didnt at all have a feeling of superiority, it was just a huge change from what I normally lived like. That odd feeling did go away though. It is a lot like how people are with my sister. Sometimes they are bigotted and mean to her for her differences in appearance. Others though feel odd for a bit, but see past it till it isnt an issue anymore. I lived there for two years and it was no big deal at all. I came back up to bellingham, and then to Mount Vernon though, and noticed something that I hadent before, the racism.

at the highschool and even the college, there are like two or three black kids, and a handful of asians and other people of other descent than european. The largest minority group where I live is mexian american, and it is pretty huge. The black kids though are either made fun of, only by a small group, or even worse and even more sinister, they are treated with a lot of attention. Everybody wants to be "friends" with "them". They become the token people of their race at the school. People want to know those people because they have different facial features and different skin color. This is an all new and more evil kind of racism. One of tokening and of seperation.

In the place I live, there is so much racism, and it isnt usually the normal kind you think of. These kids here preach the words of martin luther king and others, saying that they are in no way racists. That they know all about the condition and are so fast to brand others racist, but they have never once lived in areas that I or others have lived in. So what they do is preach about something they dont understand. They are critical of any sort of "racism", but they themselves tokenize people of other races and actually try to befriend them.

my best friend at highschool when I went there just happened to be black. Not because of his race though, but because he knew dune more than I do, probably the most knowledgable of anybody I know now. He also loved all the same books I did and was very intellectually fun to talk to, he also introduced me to cannabis.lol I only did it a few times though and havent done it since, till though it wasent a bad memory at all, but one I will remember when I grow older. He was the coolest guy at the school, but he was also harrassed, and not in the ways you would normally think. white kids would walk up to him saying things like "nigga" and other words that are "cool" to say to other people you think are neat. Of course he found it durrogitory and would blow them off, but constantly people would try to befriend him just because of his race. Not ever trying to talk with him about Paul atreides and his implications on our own human condition, about the wonders of 2001 (which he got me into i.e. TMA 1.hehe), or about the troubles of international politics. No, they would ask him what his favorite rap group was, or how good he could sing.

this kind of racism is all around in these small suburbs and cities. WASPS who think they know about racial unity constantly attack others for things they dont understand. I have been called racist by these people for callingp eople WASPS or white trash, even though I call anybody that is white trash, white trash.lol

Also, one of my other good friends who is in a gang actually, which doesnt help her image much, constantly is called a spik or other mean names just because she is mexican, also called a lesbian because she dresses like a boy. She is one of the only ones that protects my sister who still goes to highschool.

Now days there is a new evil. It is one of ignorant radicalism. So many people think theyk now it all and that they think they have the answers. Well I am telling you now, nobody does. I am only talking about this stuff because it is painfully obvious, and I am fed up with it. So many people call themselves "christian", but will rail accusations against others over trivial matters like politics. Hell, I have done it, but that is why I dont post here much anymore. In the end politics is just another homogenization of evil, which holds no importance in the grand scheme of things for the common person. Christians now days will attack other christians for not being "tolerant" when they are trying to hold to their beliefs. Other christians will attack those who dont follow to their won beliefs, and are teh exact opposite, no happy medium.

You have buddhists and taoists who have never even read their own holy books, who use their religion as a fashion. You have people fleetingly trying to follow islam simply because they want to find a "different" religion. and this all is usually based in the teenage area.

racism, religion, politics, all of this stuff is in itself evil or is tainted with evil. THe worst group of people that handle it are teenagers. My God, I have to deal with it on a day to day basis, the horrible idealism that makes one person think they are superior to others, to the nihilism of those who hate the world. the dramatic life of those our age really gets annoying, and we are the future of the world? yuck.

all of this is symbolized by the way I see people treat my friend Matt, who is black, and is treated like a puppet because of his race. In the obvious form of agressive racism, and the more sinister and evil hidden racism. Purpetrated by ignorant teens who think they know something in this world. In the end they only hurt his feelings, and mine as well.

And you haven't introduced him to this site?!

Btw, until I moved away fro school, I'd probably only seen one or two black people in my entire life as well. I couldn't help but stare at them, simply becasue I'd never seen anyone who was black before.

I'm 100% the same way, Don't have many minorities on the Island, but they are increasing, just ask my pizza guy. ;)

Never had minorities in school until University, and they are about 5% at most.(at least last year, before the large influx of students) Damn Ontairio. Made tuition go up 7%

You can come to my Island, were mostly friendly people, don't shoot each other everyday.

Only everysecond day. And every third is a hurricane!

Meh, everything smells like fish. I'd rather not. You know what they say, if it smells like trout, get the hell out.

I would say right now it smells a lot more like potatoes as it's that time of the year. I rarely smell fish, unless I'm in a fishing community.(which I don't live near any)

Actually Summerside had an odour problem for many years.

It is usual that if there is a dominant race in society, its members tend to call other-colored members by differenting name. Like you Americans have "neger" phenomenon, or Japanese have "chung", or we Slovaks have our "cigán" (gypsy; half-semitic society). Such differentiation is nothing bad, when it stands on naming. Bad is only when being black, or of any other undominant color, brings you specifical possibilities - good or bad, any color-based discrimination is a nonsense. But calling someone as "niga" because he is only one back in class, that's nothing racistical. It is still better than if you call him "idiot" or any other well-used nicknames...

There are very very few coloured people up here. I can list two names and five faces at school. I expect there is more ethnic diversity in the larger cities, like Inverness. But I haven't seen it much.

Okay my school is roughly 50% white, 40% black, 7% Asian, 2% Hispanic, 1% other minorities. Btw, an interesting thing is that Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the nation, and the number one in population. It won't be too long until white people are a minority.

Hm. My approach is simply not to think about racism. I know people from the Middle East, people who live in the far Orient, and people of Afrcian Descent; I just don't consider their background. Rarely have I ever stood up and said in accusatory fashion "That's racist" (Though I have frowned on the odd yobbish remark), nor do I think in a discrminatory fashion. The idea of racism is to me what the idea of this 'break dancing' thing (for example) is to the elderly.

And it's a way of thinking that works.

Oh, yes, and another of your weird titles: Why the mention of wasps? I mean, unless I've missed out an insect-related bit of the posts, or it was avery subtle reference by the play be Aristophanes, I can't understand why on earth it's there!

anyways, yeah I will tell him to come on, he knows more than vanguard and me combined, no joke, and no I am not trying to compliment myself.lol He would be a good asset to the site, and is one of the nicer people over here.

by the way I totally understand how you felt mahdi and andrew. When I got to lakewood it was hard to adjust. People think it is racist but it really is different if you are actually living the situation.

It's like going to the zoo. If you see a type of animal you havn't seen before, you would tend to look at it more and try to understand it than if you seen another plain dog walk by. (like how you would pay more attention to an exotic dog, than your average one, because it is different)
