I was popping around some of my other hangouts, and I noticed that a bunch of Archived Thread Boards, and I thought this might be a good idea here.

For example, really good threads that have been posted in a lot, contributed something to members, and was just interesting, could be moved to this board and locked, and parused by all members. Kind of like the good brother of Gob's Dungeon ;)

I think individual moderators could handle it, like if Ex likes a good story that winds down, he can move it there. If I think there are some memorable DE Development threads or what not, I can move them there. The other non-moderated boards could be handled by a volunteer from Fed2k Staff. And the Archived Thread Board could be moderated by some selected individuals, "Archive Staff," that look at all the threads moved there and decide if they should stay. This position could also recommend moves to Fed2k Staff or moderators. So, since Ex already moderates a board, it would make being Archive Staff easier for members like him. Likewise for Lord Johnsonius, Ordos45, Edric 0, and myself.

I don't know if this has been tried... just thought it might be worth mentioning :)

this is one of the dumbest ideas i've ever heard of in my life

if people want to see old threads, that is that the SEARCH function is for

if you have a stupid Archived Board as is proposed by this thread, then everyone is gonna just start making the EXACT SAME THREADS over and over again for all eternity. people are gonna keep regurgitating all the Archived crap that they've read, and "getting in their two cents" in threads that were locked before they could post by starting brand new threads about the exact same thing

this idea is completely idiotic, and would ruin fed2k

But Nav, if a thread is finished, like a fan fic story, why would people still want to reply ?

*WHO* decides whether a thread is "finished" or not? that is where the problem lies. only a Mod who happens to think a thread should be "finished" would one day decide to lock it - but the many posters of that thread would think that there was no reason for it to have been "finished" and they'd wanna continue that discussion. look at the "Iraq Issues" thread, for example. most of the latter majority of that thread is sheer spam, yet it keeps getting posted in continually. if Gob were to decide that it is "finished" and hence lock it, then put it up on an "Archive Board", everyone who didn't get to add what he wanted to before it was locked will be lullled into reading something to antagonize him thanks to the "Archive Board", and then end up starting a brand new thread about the exact same subject.

and that would happen with almost *every* thread on the "Archived Boards"

using a Fan Fic as an example is not really an accurate reflection of how things would work, because finished Fan Fics are very clear-cut examples of "Completion". most of the threads on the "Archive Board" would not be, and hence the regurgitation plague that i've spoken of would occur.

if the Mods think any threads are particularly good and that everyone needs to see them, then can lock and Sticky that thread. that system as it is now is fine. (although personally i think there are way too many garbage Sticky threads which need to be un-stickied)

Quite: an archived thread board will more easily be able to help us *refrain* from repetition - since at the moment, unless someone knows precisely what they're looking for, the search function won't very easiy help finding whether a topic has been discussed and answered or equivalent.

If I don't reply to a thread its usually because I don't like the idea. ;)

Personally I would rather have a single post in one board or in each board that would contain links to older or important threads rather then move them from a board where they belong to a board where it would just be a mishmash of topics.

The idea might work if we had just one or two general topics but when there are as many boards as we have with a wide variety of topics I don't think it makes sense.

Hmmm :( Sorry to have bothered you then.

Though, I have to say... I don't think it really matters if it's a mish mash though, lol, since if you are looking for something memorable from the forum, youd pretty easily find something. It's also simply a way of honoring those who started great fan fic for example, someone who wrote a great Dune or misc article, even those ancient posts that started modding dune. Just my opinion though :)

Again, sorry to have bothered, and thanks for replying anyway.

Hmmm. Well, a stickied 'classic old threads' topic wouldn't go amiss in boards, certainly.

One idea that I was reminded of could be a sort of mini 'board newsletter' - one thread in which one person might post, say once a fortnight, as a sort of general commentary on the boards: notable absences or returns, large debates, new discoveries in Duniverse, and so on, so that old members don't have to trawl through the entire site to see what has been going on, and so that people who would normally keep to one area of the site are encouraged to make forays into the interesting parts of others.

Just a little suggestion.

there are already enough useless and mis-placed Sticky threads cluttering up this site. we don't need more. if someone wants to view old stuff, he can SEARCH. if he doesn't know what he is looking for, then he will have no need to look at a sloppy regurgitation-inspiring mess that would be the Archived Board

it's funny how Gob has said in this thread the exact same thing as me about why an Archived Board is a stupid idea, only he used less words. 8)

Lol, you just keep saying that ;)

and you just keep spamming with 1 - 7 word, pointless posts. you've done it *at least* three times in this thread already! way to be a Staff! ::)

Yes, yes it is my silly friend :) I moderate three boards, have access to four you don't, and you think I'm bad at my job...

that don't mean jack all. you're a spammer and grossly unqualified to be any sort of Mod. you just get special treatment because you suck up to Gob and everyone else in power, all the time. that doesn't make you "special" or qualified. you're not. all your posts in this thread alone are evidence enough of that.
