There is a whole lot of talk and discussion about god and religion in the books. But I don't think there was ever any actuall statement that any god exists in the series.

If you start a thread, giving a statement is a start, but you should also say what you want to talk about or which question you have about the statement ;)

herbert wasent an athiest by the way.lol

In God emperor of Dune Leto II mentions that he himself is controlled by a force higher than himself, it is in one of the little blurbs given before the chapter.

Also read "Space Travel!" in the Dune appendix and it will talk about a higher force in there as well.

Actually I'm pretty sure he's atheist, but I'll check it out because you challenged it.

In the "Space Travel!", it's pretty interesting the role religion has played through the troubled times and of the exploring times. It uses several verses as if to apply them to the current situation, as for the higher force, well I figure that was the motivation of mankind riding the horse of religion.

Off an on n the Dune Novels a mention of a higher power is made. In the appendix's of Dune it is often stated that it is as if a higher power were interferring in the Bene Gesserits plans for a Kwisatz Haderach, and when he finally came, interferred so that they lost control of him. Leto also states that sometimes he fears being judged by a higher power and, oh whats her name, Leto and Duncans lover, beleives in a God. Then the Bene Gesserit, while strictly athiests, still believe in a "mystery of nature" as expressed in an orgasm.

Herbert left it open ended because, simply, no one knows absolutly positively if there is a God today, so why would they know any different 25-30, 000 years from now?

The higher power you mention is race vitality and ressembles more Jurassic Park "Life always finds a way" or even Zerg ability rather than an all-mighty God that created universe.

Hwi Noree, poor Hwi. :'(

They travelled space and had inventions and "new" religions. I think they might have decided by then whether they believed there was a almighty God or not.

Maybe by that time, people like the BGs and extraordinary ppl like paul had worked out that prescience was able to explain much of what mysticism was. Not all of it, that'd be the "higher powers" that be. But having realised this, they can use it to formulate a pseudo-religion that could influence the unenlightened. Hence the Missionaria Protectiva and the Qizarate.
