Muad dib
What is it? The book does not give me a clear definition. Could someone please explain to me what it is and what it is ment for?
GhostHunter
It is a group of representitives from every faction.
TMA_1
the landsraad is a body off noblemen from great houses. The "patriarch" (Duke, count, Earl, etc) of each house represents their fiefdom. It really is easy to understand if you just think of it as the feudel system during the middle ages in europe.
Egeides
Some sort of UN if you want. Each house has a number of votes corresponding to its power and some factors. It is meant to be a counter-weight to the Emperor, in political terms. The whole, with the Imperial house, is forming some sort of supra-government. Vanguard3000
keep in mind that the Landsraad only really has power over trivial matters. Major things are basically controlled by the Guild.Perhaps the best way to think of the Landsraad is by comparing them to the Noblesse du Robe, at the Palace of Versailles. Duncan_ghola
does guild interfere? i thought they ignored problems except when it interfered with their spice?
Vanguard3000
That's largely what I mean by "major things".
Alexander_Ordos
Landsraad is like a parlament, a legue, a senate, etc... where nobles of the Great Houses reside. It's quite close to the feudal system. But the Houses are independent so it can also be like UN in some way since the Landsraad enforces Great Convention. There's a ruling House that decides what actions ar proper and what not. In fact, though, The Sardaukar are the weapons of the Landsraad and House Corrino - it's body. Vanguard3000
No, the Sardaukar aren't a part of the Landsraad. The Landsraad have their own army, possibly created from "donations" of units from each House, like the Delos Confederacy.
Alexander_Ordos
The Imperial Sardaukar are an army that everyone fears. The Sardaukar begin to act when the Great Convention is violated... Offcourse due variuos ambitions in the story, The Sardaukar are functioning quite "improperly".
Muad dib
Oh......thanks for clearing that up. But is the landsraad in the book like the one on this site?
Mahdi
Can anyone on this site have you executed for not paying them taxes?
Vanguard3000
Geh! We had to pay taxes here?! Uh oh.Alex: If the Great Convention were to be broken by House X, then that House would be inviting an assault from combined Landraad forces (from all other available Houses). That would most likely include the Imperial Sardaukar, but it doesn't have to. Case in point: X = Corrino. ;)
Alexander_Ordos
Yes, you're probably right Van, I've just remebered the Ecazi revolt where Atreides and Vernius fought side by side...
