The Official Children of Dune Discussion Thread

Okay, I guess we're all ready now. There's just a little more than an hour left to go here in the US. Will it be a masterpiece? Will it be a bomb? We are very close to knowing. So, if the mods don't mind, I propose having a discussion on the miniseries limited to this thread so we don't have a lot of clutter. It'll be fun to talk about the event during commercials.

For those of yuo who don't know, the chatroom at irc server east.gamesnet.net channel #fed2k has people talking about the mini as it airs. At 11 (right after the mini airs) our official chat begins.

Ryan Carter, who worked on Dunes and CoD's special effects is already there under the name effects_guy

Act I was great. The music was a strong contrast from Dune's but I think it fit the scene really well. The only problem I have so far is that Stilgar and Duncan Idaho look nothing like they did in Dune. :P That's about it, though. I'm loving it otherwise.

There is also another thread people are discussing the mini in. As soon as Gob fixes the merge option, which he broke, I will merge the topics.

i agree, i did not like the changing of the actors, although i understand it's not always possible to get the same people to come back, at least most of them were the same people ;)

I just picked up the soundtrack, which I have to say, even though the tracks are kinda short, it's as good as any theatrical production soundtrack. Anyway, I've been trying to locate the lyrics to Inama Nushif. Have they been posted somewhere?

The landsraad has been working on that, and I beleive they have come up with some answers for the lyrics.

I just saw the series yesterday, and I find it way better than Dune. It's easy to see that the efforts to make this one was way higher than the first. And I really think that the actors played a hell of a lot better in CoD.

didn't they have more money for this one?

o and for the graphics they were using lightwave 7.5 (the most up to date version) and in the last one I believe they were using something like 6.0 or 6.5 ;)

watching it a bit now and i'm not impressed.

they said "sex toys". i am sure little kids are watching. that's very depraved for them to say on a kiddie-oriented show. not to mention, it's really bad writing, period. they could have conveyed that concept without being so incompetently-vulgar

other than that, they are stealing all their ideas from Emperor. ie: using Gholas and Facedancers etc.

i'll edit this post as I gain further opinions about the show

the acting sure is hammy. hammy acting is not entertaining. most of the actors are not very good. at least in the first Mini they had some really good actors

the visuals suck compared to the first Mini. it always had interesting colors flashing everywhere and made you wanna keep your eyes on the screen just for the choreography of the colors. there is nothing even remotely like that here. they shoulda kept the same visualography dudes because that's one of the few things the first Mini had going for it that this one does not

furthermore, ripping-off "The Matrix" with an infinitely lower budget does not make for good TV. i bet they did this solely as a ratings-grabbing technique. musta thought: "every likes Matrix, so let's emulate it as best we can even though it has nothing to do with Dune, and we don't have the budget to make it look good!". ::)

now they said "horse's ass". more senseless juvenile vulgarity designed to add "coolness" to the script, i suppose. all it really does is bring shame to the Pride with which Herbert's work was made. :(

new edit: another horrible line - "you bloodless bitch!". such a bastardization of Herbert's work. if he wrote like that I'm sure Dune would hardly have sold any copies and none of us here would ever have heard of Dune

Thats sad, read the books Arohk before judging it against the games. (The games are based on the books somewhat and the miniseries greatly) And in the mini I don't think they use the word Ghola very much (they call him a "Ghost") [my error, i got confused with them not calling him hayt, sorry]. Sex toys is not bad, there are worse in the mini that I can't think of now.

As for writing, it was adapted from the books, so whatever parts came from the books is good, although there are some "funny" parts in the mini (that are not related to differences in books as there are some of them too).

As for little kids watching, they did have the viewer discretion message played, and its playing at 10 PM my time.

Did anyone find that this mini made you want to cry about avery 20 minutes? It did for me, while FHD only made me want to cry twice. (if you read books you may be more sensetive...poor Hwi why was she killed? :'( (Hwi was in GEoD))

The DVD is about 30 dollars USD, so does that mean it will be selling in Canada for over $40? thats very expensive and more than I payed for my FHD SE.

I say the miniserie recently. And it is very good.

The acting is good, the scene is good, and it has a real Dune atmosphere.

There were some details which weren't so good, but they are not relevant.

Though it is kind of weird seeing Lady Jessica as Lady Jessica and not as the Borg Queen, for me... ;D

What do you say about the miniseries? :D j/k

I like it more than the first one. The him running part at the end looked kinda funny :O It was weird for me seening Susan Sarandon as That Other Lady and not Janet - Rocky Horror Picture Show ;D I was surprised they got that Baron guy back again he was cool. What was that he said to Alia about a spiritual gom jabbar

Hi. I'm not a huge fan of Dune. I watched the original movie, and enjoyed it for what it was. I never got sucked into it by any means.

Now I've never read the books. I think I might now.

I never knew COD was coming out until yesterday I saw it on the shelf of one of our video stores. So I rented it. I went into this mini expecting nothing, and remembering not a lot from Dune since it's been probably several years since I've seen it.

Let me tell you. I thought it was great. Brilliant. I think as other reviewers have commented, the brevity and fastpace of the storyline and arc served the mini well. I enjoyed it very much.

Even though it took a little bit to remember and recall things, not that I really even did, but even to figure out who people were, I thought the movie stood well on it's own, even if you hadn't seen the original.

I loved all the characters and the casting director did an amazing job. Bravo. I thought each character was cast infintismally well. Although I wasn't too sure I enjoyed the fact that SS was in this movie. She played it well, but I just kept seeing her as "susan sarandon" whereas I knew the other actors/actresses from nowhere.

I loved Alia. THe actress did an amazing job, except I'm not sure I liked the writhing thing. Seemed a little overboard, but meh. Whatever.

Leto/Ghanima were excellent. I loved them to death. They had so much chemistry and in some part I wished they weren't brother and sister, though, that is part of their chemistry. That they are brother and sister and share and inextricable bond.

At the end of book 3 I was fearing the fact that Ghani would end up with Garad'n, because I could see it a mile away. I think in the beginning I was all right with it when they showed her son and I hadn't seen any scenes with LetoII/Ghani. But after I saw them together part of me dreaded the fact that she would be with him. It seemed like they were tearing L/G apart.

But I liked how they ended their relationship. Or FH had their relationship. THat they would never marry. How fitting.

I am hoping for the SF channel to pick it up. I want to see the end. I want to see it all on screen.

I think I will pick up the books just to find out what happens.

By what original do you mean you saw?

The lynch movie came out in 1984,

oops, I think you mean the original miniseries FHD [2000]

so I'll just leave my original question in case anyone else got the same impression you meant original version of CoD.

Andrew: Check out chapters. They have it listed for $27 on there site. I'm waiting for the SE myself.

I bought it (DVD) for 25.99 +taxes so it came to 30.?? at future shop. (birthday present)

I popped it in and thats about it, watched 30 seconds or so then went to work. Will watch it over the next week when I get time.

Anyone else getting it? any comments? Funny how they only show 5 people on cover instead of 7 like FHD:SE.

Now only if I had dolby 5.1 digital sound system :-[
