I just saw it again late last night. It sends chills down my spine every time. It is so quiet and there is very, very little dialoge. It is based on good film work. There are two scenes that get me most. The first one is when david and frank go into the pod to talk alone from HAL because of their fear of him. They talk solemnly, and then it pans out in pure quiet to HALs viewpoint looking back and fourth reading the lips, then the screen turns back and you see "intermission". and still hear only the machine background. And finally at the end with "Jupitor, and beyond the infinite". It says that and then shows the beauty of jupiter. David becomes a puppet of the higher beings who will guide him to be the new starchild. He is helpless and without control. Suddenly the stargate opens and he travels through different dimensions. It is so powerful. Anybody agree with me on this one? :)

Old Hollywood when craftsmanship ment something when you could find subtance in the celluloid. It has become a almost lifeless medium of chaotic camera angles and hacked wordplay and garbled information. 8)

i liked 2001, though the starchild thing was kinda corny, but the filming techniques and the storyline was amazing. filmaking that you probably wont see anymore :(

no, the starchild part was great. He became a new being, a child-God you could almost say. And Mahdi, it takes focus to watch a movie with little dialog. This isnt a "matrix" movie. hehe ;)

Also those werent monkeys, they were an evolved primate that were one of the links between us and some sort of gourilla-type primate.

I've wanted to read that book for the longest time. The most I've seen of the movies is the ending of 2010 (I think - the one with the American and Russian ships, and the captain from SeaQuest DSV)

yup. and I highly suggest the book if you are like me in wanting to understand all the details. It would take many watchings of the movie to get it completely.

i wouldnt say he became a child of god, i saw it as more of some kind of re-incarnated baddhisatva. anyway, i thought it was dorky. just my opinion. but dont get me wrong, it was a fabulous movie.

there was another purpose mahdi, they finally started using weapons and began to eat meat. it was a sign of growth.lol starwars fan. ;) hehe jk.

my interpretation of the monkey thing was as follows:

(and anyone's guess is as good as mine- it was sooo vague)

I saw it as theistic evolution. Here you have a bunch of hopeless pitiful monkeys doing their day to day routines. Chaotic, purposeless, hopeless, void of meaning. Watching it gave me a feeling of emptiness, pity and monotonous despair- like we were watching a thousand generations of monkey's all in 10 minutes- all of them guided by instinct alone- like the Borg, no individual exists. Then, one day, in the midst of hapless monotony, in the middle of the endless cycles of routine this monolith suddenly appears. Something different to break the planar existence. This monolith represents an outside force that intervenes into the sad life of the monkey's and grants them some kind of illumination. One monkey as a result makes the first leap of true creative intelligence- a first independent thought and the first individual. From this point, the monkey's somehow 'evolved' into humans.

Well that is what I interpreted it as. Totally bogus, but still that seemed to be the message it conveyed. At any rate, i thought the monkey stuff was kinda hummorous. I mean I was really laughing.

it is about evolution of course, and that an ancient race seeded our world and many others. the next monolith was there in order to start life on europa, and for us to understand our quest in this universe. Granted I cmopletely dont believe in evolution, but it is a beautiful story.
