This little excercise is to show the complexity in the many different sounds a single letter or combination of letters can have.

The word is: ghoti

now, what word, if you think of all the sounds the above could make (think like ph = f) the above word is?

The idea is the above, if pronounced in a particular way can sound like an entirely different word that looks nothing like ghoti. and yes "gh" is F as Acriku said.
