Ok, what website service would you recommend that is free that will host your website.(no credit cards required) ie. geocities or angelfire.

what are there pros and cons. ie. webspace, ads, webspeed, etc.

I wouldnt mind making a website and I'm pretty good at HTML.

Thanks.

I would say off the top of my head your ISP. Your ISP is not going to require that you display banners on your site and they usually give you enough space (10MB) to work with. I have had Geocities and did not like the banner requirements.

i did not think my isp would let me do that.....me check into it. keep giving suggestions.

EDIT - ok they give me 5 mb of webspace, although im not sure how to post it or anything.(me still checking).

ok me found tech support!

thanks number6

yahh my website is up(somewhat) i just have to create one that suits my needs.

Gob, do you mean if i have an old computer, put linux on it , i can put it in the net for free? i wouldnt have to pay for a server?(at least not a fast one)

Exactly, I host all of my images on my own ISP's webserver, and I would have it no other way.

The whole FTP thing takes a bit to get used to, but I use WS_FTP 95, and it's good enough for my needs.

That's one of the reasons I suggest small, hometown, local ISPs to anyone, they may be a little higher, but you get better tech support, less (In my case, none) busy signals, and file hosting.

i plan on turning mine into a small nonprofit business that will benefit university students(that go to my university),like me - which will save them money. I will reveal more on that later when i get it up.

but arent local ISP's just as bad as big ones? dont they use the same dial up numbers? I could be wrong. can anybody help me with the question?

Posted

local dial-up ISP's do not use modems to connect to the internet backbone. Depending upon their connection (T1, T3, OCX), they may or may not be better. there's really no way to say without trying/reviewing one.

As my name is not Gob, but still could provide you with the answer.. . . hope the real Gob doesn't mind all that mutch . .. .

If you have an 24*7 internet connection at home. [ As cable, DSL, sat-link or in some area's WLAN ] You can simply donload a linux version, install a WWW server and that's it. Don't host massive scripts, or do extream things with it and you'll be fine.

If you havn't got a 24*7 internet connection [ and use a regular phone line or ISDN ] the option above doesn't work.

You'll have no chooice but to use the few MB's a space that came with your ISP's or you can take a hosting company that does it for you.

As for starting as your own host, and even for some one else. Be carefull and don't expect to much. I've been trying to do it for the last 3 years or so and still it makes a marginal profit. [ but then I'm spending way to much of it so that could also be a reason ;) ]

I started with a regular modem dial in 5 years ago, just to run a server, then it got better cable, to T1 and DSL to result in my current 2 connections. Cable and viber optic. [ borrowed the AT&T wires from KPN QUEST after they got bankrupt, just don't tell them ;) ]

And if you are planning to start some serious hosting you should have at least 8Mb per sec [ if not more ]. Not to mention a more stable server then the one above.

But that won't be nessecary, so just you "old" computer and Lunix would be just fine if you'r planning to host a few pictures, and mayby even a small forum. [ just be warned that running a forum requires scripting to be turned on and you'll have to work on your sercurity ]

What gryphon said. ;)

golly gee whitacker Gob, that almost looks like, shall i even say it...spam. well if YOU spam i have no faith in humanity. tsk tsk tsk :P ;D ;)

to whoever in regard to gryphons reply, would serious hosting be kind of like this site?(lets say without videos on this site.)

also i would hope i could hook 2 computers up to same line(cable) with one of them routers or something.

the fastest i have downloaded anything onto this computer would be 500kb.

where would i obtain linux?

Yep, this site falls [ in my reply ] under "serious hosting". :)

Due to the amout of data shifted in prime hours and the use of scripting.

Although compared to www.microsoft.com this site is nothing in comparrison to host .. ..

That should be enought to run a simple site. Just a idee, if you do get that server. . restrict the up- and download speeds users can have. reserve an amount of bandwith for your own use [ and be generous in that ;) ], than some for a login account so you can acces your own server even if you should have a lot of visitors. [ a modem dialup is an option to although I don't prefer that myslef ] and finally restrict the anonymous connections to just a few kb's. Depending on what you are offering on your site.

You can download a Linux version from www.redhat.com or www.debian.com. SuSe could be good to, but I don't prefer that one myself. [www.suse.de]

edit: just thought of it in the shower [ don't ask ], but 500 is probably you downlink speed, you uplink is what visitors of your site need. A whild guess is that with 500 up that whould be 64 to a max of 128. If you would like to test your up and downlink speed. Have a look at this site.

If you're having problems finding a Linux version to download, let me know. I could provide you with a Redhat release. [you'll have to download 2 ISO images].
