All that video-game addiction stuff is a load of cr*p. It's like people claiming to be addicted to chocolate, or TV, or reading. It's not physically possible. It's just a mental thing.

Posted

Of course it's not PHYSICALLY addictive. But anyone who feels like his day is incomplete without logging on and playing at least one game knows that it is MENTALLY addictive. I know that feeling, and I know there are plenty of you who do too.

Yeah, this is a borderline topic for this thread. No, it does not apply ONLY to Emperor, but it certainly applies to Emperor more than any other game I've ever played. So whether or not Gob "dungeons" it, it is Emperor-related.

That's not the over all point of the article, Ethan. Sure, the author begins by describing the negative things that happen when people are consumed by an addiction. However, at the end of the article the author actually ends up embracing PC gaming with the words, "And I will leave you with that. Signing on now

One of the first signs of addiction is denial. Fortunately, I have reached the acceptance stage myself. Yes, I'm addicted to gaming. But it's at least more healthy than alcohol or drugs.

I thought it was a good article. It certainly applies to me, and I know I don't play online nearly as much as most of you youngsters. Being addicted to PC gaming doesn't mean you don't ever do anything else or that you don't have other interests. What it means to me is that very often, when you SHOULD be doing something else, like doing your homework, spending time with the wife/girlfriend/kids, doing necessary jobs around the house, paying the bills, eating a decent meal (not gaming foods like chips and soda), etc., you very often neglect or put off those things because the urge to jump on your computer and play the game is so strong.

Maybe the article was simply over the heads of those who have replied so far, but I KNOW without any doubt that many of you completely understand the author's point because you, too, are PC game addicts. Some of you are so addicted to Emperor, and anything to do with it, that whenever you log on, the first place you come is right here to the Emperor forum.

Hmmm, I don't see how paranoia fits into this discussion. Enlighten me.

Come on, man. "Now no one's seen him for over a year"? All urban legends end like that. ::)

Posted

Yeah, I think that not seeing someone for a year might be an extreme case. But seeing someone a lot less is certainly a reality. If you don't agree with that, you know nothing about those massive multiplayer RPGs--they are a world by themselves, and you could really get lost in all the time it takes to play and really experience one of them.

I think this game addiction thing is for real.

And that there are many ppl who are addicted to games in such way that their social life suffers under it.

I clicked some links in the article and read alot more stuff bout it.

I for one know a guy whos comp is his whole life.

His house looks like a bomb has exploded there, plates and garbage all over the place.

The kitchen is full of dirty stuff, most of the stuff is so gross that I wouldnt even touch it.

If he needs a plate he grabs a plate from the dirty stuff and cleans what he needs. The rest keeps rotting where it was put down after he finished using it.

His whole paper thing ( bills and other stuff ) are spread through his whole house, if I want to sit I must first move a bunch of stuff before I can sit.

He doesnt live like a normal person, has no ppl who care about him anymore and is left with no social activities whatsoever. ppl who come to his house would freak out by seeing such a mess.

The house hasnt been cleaned in god knows how long, if I need to take a crap I just hover over the toiletseat becoz I dont wanna touch it. I have never seen him with a girlfriend, his only interest is his comp and gaming.

His meals exist out of microwave meals and stuff and he drinks cola straight out of the bottle all day long.

Me and another guy are the only ones who visit him, I do it becoz I know him from far back. But I dont go often.

So dont come and tell me its a bunch of crap, this game addiction thing is not a fairytale or something.

It can really mess up your life forgood.

lol if I have the chance I will make some pictures and show you what a game addict's house looks like.

That only should say more than enough.

Nice comments, Skumruler. I think that PC gaming is a good thing. It is a healthy pasttime. What we do when we play Emperor is similar to speed chess--reacting very quickly and countering or attacking as the opportunities present themselves. It must help a person deal with decision making under fire. And I think it keeps the mind sharp in certain areas.

That said, life is about balance. Sometimes I find that all I want to do is play PC games, but fortunately for me (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) I don't have the time between work, family and other interests to play as much as I want to. Also, if I were a single guy, I KNOW my social life would suck because most of the time I'd just come home from work and sit here at the computer. My wife keeps me in line. My job does too, and fortunately I have an interesting job. I used to work on assembly lines--BORING. Today, I went to the shooting range for four hours for our quarterly shooting qualifications. I shot my Sig Sauer .40 cal, an 870 Remington shotgun, and my 9mm submachine gun. That wasn't boring at all, you see. Last night, we busted a dumbass with three thousand pounds of marijuana. That's right, 3,000 pounds. That wasn't boring either. Besides computer games, I love movies, I work out regularly, and I do family activities. My life has some balance. But if other demands weren't there, I'd be a computer game junkie all the way because I think playing RTS games is better than everything but sex. And many matches last longer than sex. ::) Also, I'm very competitive, and I'd like to be the best or at least close to the best in everything I enjoy. Again, fortunately the choices I made to get married, have kids, earn a degree, and get a good career have made me balance things I must do, things I want to do, and things in between. PC gaming is fun and healthy until it becomes an addiction that makes you neglect everything else. The key is to find balance in your life so you don't end up being a hermit with no friends, no social life, poor health, poor hygiene, a filthy house, and no interests beyond gaming.

I don't fall for that Pay-to-Play scam, as almost all MMRPG's are, so I really wouldn't know. Besides, I have a 56k internet connection, so i don't play much online...

Yes, if there is one thing all diehard PC gamers should fear it is the pay-to-play trend. So far, I refuse to pay. However, what if they come up with a game that beats the hell out of anything else on the market and it costs, say, five dollars a month to play on the server? Well, most people would think, "Five dollars? What's five dollars?" and they'd probably pay up. But that's where the real problem begins. Soon it's seven dollars, then ten, then twelve . . . etc. Little by little our haven of cheap entertainment (well, cheap as long as you have access to a decent computer :)) might become just another cash cow for the big companies, and they might just stop making good games you can play online for free. How much are you willing to pay for your electronic crack fix? If you're like me, you love playing free online games against and with real people, but with the current trend in MMORPGs, that might someday be something about which we can only reminisce.

I have yet to read all of this thread or all of the link

but:

I don't think she EVER discusses anything positive about gaming

Her facade/satire involving her metamorphasizing into her gaming personality is not saying anything positive at all but rather yet another negative poke at gaming

It's like saying: Look, the chance of addiction is so dangerous that even I, who was just speaking about it, am addicted

''illustrating just how strong of an addiction gaming can really be.''

As you said you're self. I don't see this irony is a positive statement

Additionally, anyone can become mentally addicted to anything such as the things you mentioned (somewhere) reading, watching movies, whatever,(damn still can't find it...to lazy to check page properly:D)e.t.c

Thats why you get people with eating disorders (physichal addiction... but still), nymphomaniacs and even... choko freaks!!!! :O :O :O :O ;D

And yes it is true that this is the first place I go to when I log on but that is irrelevant because I haven't ever played emp for over a year now

That's like saying someone is addicted to soccernet, despite it being his homepage:D, since it's the first site he visits!

Everyone has a site they go to first, whether that site be based on furniture to interior decorating would always going to the latter make somebody addicted to homosexual intercourse:D?

The newest PC gammer has a 4 page thing this month about 1. libermens new plans to blow games to hell. And to licence them under the same people who moniter music.

2. mmorpgs. it states that good things come out of them two. like about 15 people who met over everquest ect and ended up getting married.

Posted

If there's anything good, someone will come around to charge for it, edit it, or keep it from you entirely. Lieberman needs to find something better to do because there are a lot of worthier causes out there.

Posted

Liebermans are trying to ban games? (Iv'e never actually heard of them)

And 15 people getting married over the net isn't something, most people would take as a good thing... that like saying 15 people met whilst on crack so crack has some beneficial effects as well ;D
