Shiloh for it's memorable battle moments (it's set in Battle of Shiloh in civil war), and every two chapters has one chapter from the south perspective, and one chapter from the north perspective.

The Jungle for it's historical significance (quick after this was published the FDA laws were passed, and later more laws against corrupted businesses) and very good story of a european family struggling in a corrupted capitalist country (the author, Upton Sinclair, was a socialist and wrote the book arguing against capitalism.

Animal Farm (I believe the writer was George Orwald or something) is a pretty short but good book, about an animal society that rises up against the farmer and then works long and hard to create a utopia for themselves, but they are continuously used by the pigs for their purposes. Nice parallel story to the Soviet Union.

I don't have a particular taste for one genre. I can recommend The Discovery of Heaven though, by Harry Mulisch.

I like analyses. Philosophical, historical, even futuristical (this genre is also called sci-fi ;) ). But I'm not fundamental for it. Recently I read Bulgakov's Majster i Margareta, very good book.
