I recently have a program what doesn't run under Windows XP, but does run under Windows 98, I have 2 computers. 1 with XP and 1 with 98, the problem is that the computer with win98 is too slow.

I'm thinking about a way to run Windows 98 on the computer with XP, but I don't know how yet. I had an idea about making a bootable Windows 98 cd-rom, with Windows installed on it (since Windows needs to be on the booted drive). So I can run Windows 98.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to boot on a windows 98 cd and run windows 98 on it, while you have installed Windows XP?

2. How do you make a bootable cd-rom under win98?

3. If these things won't work, is there an easy other way (network booting? Both computers have a network)

Notes: I have as final solution to buy an extra hard disk and install win 98 on that disk. But I'm searching for cheaper methods

I don't think I have to include dxdiags, since those aren't necissary for this problem, but if they are, I'll add them

Thanks for help

I think it would be easier to make your faster machine dual bootable. You know have both Windows 98 and an XP partitions and select at startup which OS you boot up. I don't think you can run Windows 98 from a bootable CDROM. You would have to create a RAM disk or some place to write temp data (Swap space). I know what you are asking can be done with Linux, but that is the ultimate hacking OS and you are asking about Windows which is not known for its flexibility. Hell, MS can't even seperate the web browser from the OS.

Best option is to make a second partition on your exsisting harddrive ... after doing that make your fast computer duel bootable by installing Win98 (second edition is recommended) on the 2nd partition.

If you don't have the extra bucks right now to purchase a second harddrive or if all your IDE slots are filled with devices. Computers generally have 4 IDE slots for devices ... I had to partiton my computer due to not having any IDE slots remaining open - hd, CD/DVD, CDRW, tape.

Thanks for the help. I will try if I can do such a thing.

But can you make 2 partitions with 2 different file systems on 1 disk (fat32 and ntfs)?

And what about Network boot?

And no, it doesn't help with compatability :( the first thing I tried

Yep, as long as you have seperate partitions the file system on eatch of them is not depended upon the other.

Just remember you might need a bootable partition. And not all OS's can read all the file systems. '98 won't be able to read XP's NTFS [ unless you install a nice programm that makes it possible ]

And a Network boot ? Think that's useless in this case. You only need that if you need to install a OS by means of a network. And then you need Novell, Win2K or UNIX as far as I know. Or else it's just to get you'r settings from a dedicated server. But You don't need that on your '98 computer I believe ?

What program is it? Perhaps it would be better to just use a different program instead? It seems like a lot of work to setup a partition to use just one program, unless its really important I guess.

It's LEGO studios, I really wanted to create movies with the LEGO I still had :) But now LEGO now ruined it's good reputation by not making it possible under Win XP (not stated on the box)

But that's another story.

I will try to divide the disk into 2 parts. But then I have to format it :-

Thanks for the help

What I mean, I have currently installed XP, and when I want to install win98 on it on another disk, do I have to install WinXP again?

So when I install win98 (while I still have WinXP installed) on another disk, I won't get any problems?

If I get this right, I am very happy :)

Thanks

You do still have XP, but it might not be bootable. You can boot into it with a bootdiskette [ XP cd for instence ] and use XP bootmaneger. Or install a 3th party boot manager, but that sometimes need a 30 MB partition at the start of your HD.

In short, just install it and see if it works, you won't loose you'r XP partitions. [ unless you explecitly remove them ] And afterwards you can boot into XP and use it's bootmanager. But that you might have to configurate afterwards.

Ok, after alot of time I decided to try it all again.

It worked!

I have 2 hardware harddisks, with a total of 3 partitions

1 is the c disk with Win XP

2 is the d disk with Win 98

3 is the e disk and extra disk with ntfs

2 and 3 are actually 1 disk.

Now when I want to start win98, I need to set the second disk as first boot disk in order to run Win 98 (actually the second boot disk, because the first one is the floppy) in the BIOS Setup.

I need to set this back when I want to run Win XP

No my question:

There must be an easy way to choose a operating system. But how?

I tried it. But I couldn't choose a default operating system where they say you can.

I got a longer post, but it got removed when I used the back button after I got an error.

But I think I need to edit the boot.ini. But that is not recommended.

EDIT:

Ok, I mean the topic:

Specifying the Default Operating System for Startup

I just have one option in the list, and that is some kind of autodetect

??

You shouldn't select something. As far as I understand, you should provide the amount of seconds that you want the option to be displayed when you start up.

When you start up, it'll ask you which operating system you'd wish to start up. The seconds you provide, is the amount of time this menu will remain there before it'll take the default (which most likely will be XP).

Hmm. There is problem.

With me the checkbox is already checked, and there is an amount of 10 seconds.

While I never had an option to choose an OS.

The OS versions will be auto detected I believe.
