Warhammer 40k meets Dune

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, but a huge Dune and 40k fan (tabletop as well as DOW).

For a while now, I've been working on creating a Dune themed army based upon the rules in codex Black Templar. Here are some pics and a little explanation.

HQ: My Naib (Marhsal), Watermaster (Chaplain) and Duncan Idaho (Emperor's Champion)

Troops: My first squad of Fremen Warriors (Black Templar Initiates).

Fast attack: Ornithopter (Land speeder)

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/w3vw6eoY-Ban8yDcVCPpkA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGGXHo5AYsw/SdAEyw1dYoI/AAAAAAAABg4/pHLb6mJKhac/s144/DSC00756.JPG" /></a>

Heavy Support: Sandworms (Land raiders)

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cimNHnUZATJALyv52Ha1Hg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_zGGXHo5AYsw/SdWeDpiCyaI/AAAAAAAABn0/JkoBCN6C2ME/s144/DSC00798.JPG" /></a>

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/q1DyE9aUe75k0Q8xfKxXwA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_zGGXHo5AYsw/SdWcYGTwoPI/AAAAAAAABmk/CKYB7h4gA6o/s144/DSC00789.JPG" /></a>

3rd Stage Guild Navigator (Vindicator)

If you guys want to see more, just let me know! I've got a ton more pics.

Is that a light in the sandworm, or just an opening (small hole) to let light in?

Also, approximately how big are these objects?

I don't know much about warhammer (I quickly looked at wikipedia). Are they difficult to make? How long to finish a single object?

This is very interesting :)

Ya those are LEDs! Below are some photos of the battery pack and cables.

Warhammer is a about 1:48 scale, also known as 'heroic.' A general infantry model is approximately 1" tall, the sandworms are on bases about 4"x6" and are about 5-6" tall.

Here's a photo of the skeleton I used to make the first sandworm- it gives you an idea of how large they are.

and again the finished sandworm made from this skeleton

The sandworms aren't that difficult to make, but do take some modeling abilities. They are made from plastic bottle skeletons, then multiple layers of sculpted 'apoxie sculpt' (two part epoxy clay). Here are some WIP shots from the worm above.

Klaus, I have to say, your Naib, Watermaster and Duncan Idaho are really superbly done. I'm something of a 40K fan myself, but I never play, I just really enjoyed the modelling aspect of it. But, yeah, I'm blown away by those figurines. Even the worms are good, but I notice you didn't go with the triple-jawed David Lynch/Westwood variant--too difficult to pull off, technically?

In any case, this might be a good time to suggest a 40K/Dune crossover thread if it hasn't already been done, come to think of it. The similiarities between the two universes are really quite strong, if you can get through just how absolutely insane the 40K universe is. I mean, Space Marines/Sardaukar, Navigators/Navigators, Imperium of Man/Imperium, God-Emperor/God Emperor of Man, which, by the way, is really where most of the similarities lie. You've got this Kwisatz Haderach figure sort of mysteriously pulling the strings in Warhammer, as you would have in Dune... anyway, good work again, Klaus.

Thanks guys, love the feedback. Wolf, the reason I didn't go tri-leaf is because I'm 'attempting' to stay as true to the books as possible. Ya, there are some problems with my army fluff-wise (navigator fight with Fremen? what?!) but as far as modeling goes, I went with the description in the books whenever I could. As cool as Lynch's mouths were, they are never described as being segmented as such- rather as large gaping holes similar to annelids. In many ways the path I took kinda sucked comparatively- adding all those teeth to a splayed open mouth would have been a cake walk compared to three readily available surfaces without confined space.

Anyway- That's why the navigator looks more like a fish than a giant cuddlefish, the ornithopter has wings, not turbines, and the worms have round mouths, not three piece ones.

Again, solid work. I also just noticed that the ornithopter's cockpit is the screen off of a TIE Interceptor--it works. As does the jar lid for the Navigator tank. All those rivits and indentations are very reminiscent of the Lynch films, which, for me, is always what Dune looked like.

Wow, I'm a big W40k nut and these stuff look good. Would be nice to see Fremen take on Chaos daemons and ork hordes with the strength of Black Templars!

Good work, really love how you managed to build such magnificent sandworms like that!

Hmm the battle pictures aren't working.

I had the same problem.

But I quoted his post, and the url for each image appeared, and I copy/pasted them into browser and they showed up.

Of course now they are missing again, but that is because they are not cached.

Impressive work. I have recently become a WH40k fan myself due to Dawn of War (don't intend to play the tabletop game as its too expensive of a hobby and I don't have the patience to do the models). I was wondering, did you used the Tallarn regiment of the Imperial Guard to make the Fremen warriors. Both are from a desert world and would fit with each other.
