ErasOmnius
Andrew, Have you ever traveled on the bridge that connect PEI to the mainland? I am fascinated by bridges of all sorts.Still hasn't reached 0 deg C, or 32 deg F, yet. Getting our air directly from NW Terr & Nunavut again. Andrew
Andrew, Have you ever traveled on the bridge that connect PEI to the mainland? I am fascinated by bridges of all sorts.Still hasn't reached 0 deg C, or 32 deg F, yet. Getting our air directly from NW Terr & Nunavut again.Yes I have dozens of times. I've walked across the bridge as well when it originally opened (try walking 12 km when you don't normally do that!). It's a nice bridge, with a nice price tag as well. $1 billion. Had to get a Danish water crane.Really helped with tourism when first opened for several years, and makes transportation much faster and easier (for example transfer trucks come and go as please except when windy out). Taking the ferry would take much longer than 10 minutes to drive across it.If in small car you can't see over the concrete sides. In mid sized vehicle there are a couple spots when you can see stuff in distance. Nothing really special about it after you drive over it a couple times. What would be more fun is being in a boat going under or near it, just to get a sense of how large it is.Where I live I had a clear view of the construction So each day I could see when they added a pillar or top of pillar.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederation_bridge
ErasOmnius
It must be interesting to live in a place where tides are such a concern.
Andrew
It must be interesting to live in a place where tides are such a concern.Normally we don't get this many problems associated with it. But this year has sucked.Tomorrow we are getting 30cm of snow, with wind gusts of 80km/h. And a storm surge. Although only a snowfall warning is currently in place (they say storm surge warning will be posted later). As they said in news last night, fourth Monday (week?) in a row with wind/rain/storm. Trees are constantly falling from all this wind. But lots of firewood for us!EDIT:They just added storm surge warning.I still havn't sent pics from last storm to property owners. argh. ErasOmnius
Cold day, 3 deg F. After work, reading Cold War spy novels. Didn't know there was a bridge across the Danube, the Maria Valeria, that was destroyed by the Germans in WW2, but not rebuilt until 2001. ErasOmnius
Those older bridges are nice. This is a very interesting bridge that I have always admired. And a fairly new bridge on Cyprus, the Petra Tou Viaduc. Have you ever been on it?
athanasios
[A bit of topic but since you mentioned bridges (ah yes due to the wind bell), here is a link to 2 bridges from my mom's island, the smaller from her village ( I 've passed over it hundreds of times-if not thousands):1. "http://kithira.eu/images/imgKithira/katwlivadi2.gif" or "http://kithira.eu/images/imgKithira/livadi1.gif"The latter being the longest of its kind in Greece. Andrew
athanasiosAny idea what the purpose of holes in bridges are for? Water drainage? Hole goes all the way through?
athanasios
I am afraid we have to wait for a British engineer to provide more insight, since both are their forefather's works. My bridge engineering knowledge sucks. May I guess they add to the strength of the bridge and reduce weight?
ErasOmnius
Kythira! Gateway to the Ionian! The strategic place!L'isola è stata dominata dai Veneziani per secoli. Poi i Britannici ha preso, a tenere fuori delle mani del Sultano, poi alla Grecia. Ovvia-mente, così come qualsiasi altra regione Occidentale, la popolazione è tuffantesi. Andrew
Very cold out.wind chill -31Saw a car needed boosting. Mine didn't sound great when starting twice today. Dunno if something is wrong with it it was a rough ride home from town, hoping nothing broken (spring or struts).
athanasios
In such a cold weather your car to break down is the worst you can get. Oh, that hoping it won't break down brought an old memory : When I run out of battery had no money left to replace and had to travel 240km back home from uni (weekend). A neighbor pushed me to start in the morning to go to the university, parked uphill at university, started with reverse in the afternoon and 'prayed' all trip not to stop. Andrew
So Jan 19 got 15 cm of snow. Then February 2 got 8cm. And tonight supposed to get 25 cm. Supposed to get more snow on Tuesday. :(EDIT:They changed snowfall warning to a winter storm warning (that usually means more wind + no visibility).
