spicy
hi. i am the kind of guy who is allwayes downloading stuff... i cant help notto download all kinds of files.. but the problem is that some of those downloadshave viruses and spyware stuff.. somtimes i use programes to clean them butsomtimes those bugs cant be remover or heald,,so i end up having to format my hard drive evry 2 or 3 weeks and reinstall windows.well the question is: is too mutch formatting bad for the hard drive or its a normal process just like deleting files from the driver... erjin999
Quick formatting definately isnt any different from using your hard drive like normal as it doesnt actually format anything.Spiz, why do you format every 2-3 weeks ? thats ridiculous. Find out about Disk Imaging if you want to save yourself lots and lots of time. Look at programs like Norton Ghost and Acronis TrueImage. They will take snapshots of your system and let you put those snapshots back when things go wrong (virus...). Let me know if its something you might liike to think about. I can explain in more detail.
veK
you can calm down...if you run a normal desktop pc with good harddrives it doesn't matter. I used to format my pc too every 4-6 weeks back then for different reason. wasn't a big deal, just reinstalled the os. I mainly had seagate & samsung hdds but as long as you don't have the cheapest crap hdd you don't have to worry...I don't know bout notebooks 2,5" hdds though. just formated it once till now. and now I'm already getting a new one. gryphon
know we know you are using a illigit version of Windows, as no one is gon'na call MS every 3 - 4 weeks to get Windows activated again.. . :PNorton Ghost is a nice way to get your computer back in no time. Although the easier way is to install Windows Virtual PC or VMware and use a virtual PC for downloading. . test the software and if it's safe move it to your own PC. That's how I do it anyway. And if that's not enough that's how Akamai does it. . ;)

Andrew
Gryphon I never phone microsoft after I format my computer. I think it just asks for my serial key that is on the side of my computer, I type that in and it gets sent to microsoft and windows works fine. What would it matter to microsoft if I formatted my computer every 2 weeks? If someone payed for windows Microsoft can't stop someone from using it just because they format their computer every 2 weeks.Although of course if you need to format your HD every 2 weeks that is pretty sad.I'm not using a pirated windows, but know people that do.I probably don't know what spicy and gryph are talking about :-[

Megashrap
Easiest way I have found to use is Drive Image by Powerquest, it takes aprox. 5 minutes to do a complete format and clean install image file restore. And that windows restore your talking about may seem like a great tool to use, but if your sys. gets smacked with a medium threat virus it can wreck the restore files also so that would be useless to do then. Not to mention the amount of space windows restore hogs up. Backup image file stored on hdd.or dvd of a clean install is the easiest and fastest, safest way i've found anyway. Also, stay away from all the damn porn and kazaa dloads and you won't get all that crap as much. ;)
veK
gryphon: I use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/ to build my own windows out of the original files. it's always about 200mb WITH sp2 and all patches already built in - instead of the default 450mb WITHOUT sp or hotfixes... so as you can see, ms builts in a lot of crap - activation is one of these things - and is always erased from my new selfmade version of xp ;D

erjin999
Drive Image is no longer produced, but it was my fav ( until I found acronis).Unfortunately, none of them are free. I guess everyone wants something for their hard work. :-[I will search for a linux based system, see if there is something there for you.System restore is not the same though, it is crap in comparison ( but still useful, sometimes, but not if you have imaging). erjin999
Vista is nasty. I was reading about its digital rights management. I will have to gut out my PC to run vista in a way that allows me to watch films on my comp ( I dont, but the point is...).Bring back 95, I say ! Andrew
Win 98 was better than 95. Really it was :PBy the time Vista comes out and I need a new OS for some wierd reason, hopefully Linux will be better than it is now.
erjin999
Hopefully, but which one to go for ? At least there is only one set of Windoez. We are all on the same platform, XP, be it professional or home or server.Linux seems a bit all over theplace for me. Maybe I just dont know enough about it yet. We are all on the same platform, XP, be it professional or home or server.Officially Microsoft still has 2 lines. One corporate and one for home use. WindowsXP Home and Media Center are not in the same as the server and Pro versions. (like the differance between (9X, Me and NT)Linux seems a bit all over theplace for me. Maybe I just dont know enough about it yet.Nope, it really is all over the place. Although you might want to try Apple's new OS as an alternative to Vista if you really don't like Microsoft ;)
Andrew
Yeah Linux is all over the place with dozens of different OS. But that is a pro (and con). Choice is good. That's what is so good about opensource. The user has the choice. Like Firefox and Miranda, you can choose between plugins and extensions. You can choose what you want and don't want. gryphon
choice is a good thing, but not when every one is making up their own standards.
