The inhumanity of some people..

This all happend today at around 11:45 A:M today..

Was walking home from school, as we only had a half day today because parent teacher confrences and things. Had just crossed a rather busy street(I was walking)

Not more then 10 seconds after I cross, I hear a horn and turn around just in time to see a SUV slam into a Van going about 45 MPH. They both slid to a stop, and I started over there. I was about 50 feet away from the acident, A dozen cars were on waiting to cross the street.

And NO ONE from those cars which were not more then 5 to 10 yards away got out by the time I got there. A few kids who were on foot were heading towards it, but no one got out of their cars. NO ONE

The SUV was closer, and I checked to see if the women inside was okay, she said she was alright, the airbags had been deployed and she had her seat belt on, she was talking coherently and walked fine when she got out of the vehicle.

The girl was trying to get out of the Van, but having trouble putting weight on her left foot. We helped her out, she tried to walk but couldn't so we layed her on the ground. I handed my phone to someone to call 9-11.

When the police got there, they said only one person had called. From my cell phone. No one in the cars even called 9-11.

Her ankle was inflamed and she woudln't let me get near it. I felt along her knee, and checked along her fibula and tibia down to her ankle, and she didn't have feel any pain till I got close to her ankle, also checked for a distal bi pedal pulse and found a strong one.

Everything looked fine, but she kept trying to fall asleep.

The black kid had a small pen light for god knows what reason in his book bag, I checked her pupils, her left one was fine, but the right one didn't dialate very much. A fire truck and police car showed up, I told the black kid and a couple mexicans to keep talking to and keep her awake, I went over to the paramedics and told them.

The traffic had backed up all the way to the school by now, and people were actully honking to go foward. This just pisses me off so much..

A black kid, 3 mexicans, and a Jew were the only ones who helped, Everyone else sat in their cars..

The paramedics took her away with a broken ankle and a mild concussion, the other women was fine. I just got my phone back and walked home, while the people continued to honk and bitch about the traffic.

I just can't belive how selfish and self centered those ass holes in the cars were, for refusing to even get out of their cars and help, and honking about the traffic.

Most of the time those people don't get involved since they're afraid that they will be held back by police, questioned, and dragged into some long and boring affair. Although it does seem grossly selfish how those people didn't even call 911 or pay attention to what happened and just kept honking. I've been in this kind of situation too, where 2 SUV's slammed into each other. The damage was mostly facial, and the two guys got out and started yelling at each other, so I can't really talk from experience. :-

I made an accident because of some idiot.

Here's the story: I was going fine on my line (lane) with my car, and all of the sudden I see in front of me a car with the emergency lights on, so I pass it by right looking to see what happened. I said that if there was an accident I could stop a little further so not to stop the traffic even more. But the car was allright. The idiot just stopped in the middle of the road the everyone was going 60km/h to talk on the cellphone. When I turned my head back I didn't even have enough time to break before I slammed into the car before me at the stop-lights. I know it was my falt for being so unnatentive.

So the basterds not only don't help other people, they even create accidents. If you'll see the way some idiots are driving 'round here... Man, and it seems they're breeding.

LOL You said there was only one call to the police. Man... it took me and hour to find a policeman to make the papers. Thankfully there were more than enough enthusiasts trying to help me. Sometimes they over do it.

But Clemenza is right... that's why they didn't stop.

Human life is a currency of little value to others. Whether on an impersonal scale such as a disaster far away, or a personal scale where you can see the damage. The need for self preservation (from further damage, from lawsuits, from trying to help and failing) overrides the need to aid others.

Or possibly people just don't care.

Does it matter? I mean this is thie kind of thing that is going on every day on a far grander scale. It's just that it gets more uncomfortable when brought closer to home.

There was this woman in New York in the 60's named Kitty Genovese who was raped and murdered walking home from her job.  38 of her neighbors heard her screams.

But how many called the police?

  None.

Psychologists have called this phenomenon "diffusion of responsibility" (Darley & Latane), where people in society, who are otherwise good, upstanding members of society, expect someone else to call the police or help the victim.  The greater the number of observers, the lower the instance of calling for help.

Darley and Latane studied this by having research students act out a seizure in the presence of a differing number of fellow students.  They found that if only one person saw the seizure, help was almost guaranteed.  But the more witnesses, the more likely that nothing would be done to help.

I'm guessing that people just assume that someone else, like yourself, ex, will get the job done.

BTW, very nice job ex, you handled the emergency extremely well.

Do you have any emergency training?
