But it's a ridiculous idea, how will artists make money if people can just download for free. But I suppose they do still get money from concerts...

Well Music is different than the other forms of piracy, as musicans can perform their music and get paid to do so.

Programs and games and movies do not get paid for live performances. They only get paid when someone buys the product. (or renews subscription, or pay to play)

Opensource can work for software. Opensource is possible for games, although harder. Movies and music are kinda hard to opensource.

Music industry screwed itself over. Movie industry is a joke with the high ticket prices and food. Why would I spend $20 for myself to go to the movies? Maybe more people are renting or buying dvd's than actually going to the movies because it is cheaper than going to the movies sometimes. (Especially if paying for your date).

I'm not "for" pirating, (as stealing is wrong) but that doesn't mean I havn't pirated in the past and I wont in the future. The industry just doesn't want to change. Not to mention that the music industry pirated off of consumers for years charging high CD prices when they were not supposed to be that high.

I doubt people will stop going to cinemas, open source programms can be bought with support [ most major Linux distibutions got big and not to forget rich that way. . *kough* RedHat *kough* ] and don't forget you might need to pay for online gaming with some games.

Think it was an issue of Wired a couple of mounths back dealing with open source music. . in short. . people will always need to get food on the table. . Open Source or not they still need money. Ironically most open source software writers are on the payroll of major IT companies.

Where I live it's just 5 Euro's. 9 If you go on weekend and Friday nights. If you go to Antwerpen (Belgium) which has about one of the best theaters here it's 7 euro's or so. Even on Friday nights if I am not mistaken.

Empre Theatres

Closest and only real theatre near me (and in my province)

On a weekend it would cost me 9.25. In Charlottetown (capitol city) it costs $10. Seems like a big difference for a 40 minute drive. Well not with the price of gas.

Back in early 1990's it would only cost $4-$5 on a weekend. Cost of large pop is like $5. Not sure though. I also read in one of my economics books that movie ticket prices adjusted for inflation are inflated a lot compared to any other product.

Would argue other points but too drunk to think good.

Redhat is true. Any opensource that offers a premium package for $ is bad. Same could be said for openoffice with their staroffice I think.

Ahh. Those price quotes just make me feel better about living in the poo-hole I do. Less then 10 minutes away, we've got a "dollar theater" that plays old (by a few months. about halfway from release to video/dvd) movies for $1.50USD. Can't even beat that renting a movie.
