Thought I would start a thread on overclocking since there are some that like to do it. My latest overclock is the AMD Athlon XP Barton 3000+ with Asus A7N8X motherboard. Since I have some nice new upgrades to put together in a few days figured I would go ahead and overclock this one. I read about it and decided to try the wire trick on it.

From what I had gathered I could get around 2500 mghrz from doing this. So after doing all this and running Prime95 most of the day here are my final results.

I set up the proper cooling and everything to OC my garaphics card, but it just fudged up UT2004, as overclocking is prone to do.  THe was only about 6 FPS improvement anyways.

I'm going to overclock my GeForce 6800GT soon. I just want to keep it running by default settings for at least 6 weeks afert buying... and now 3 weeks are over. so in a month or so I'll overclock it to 6800Ultra level or even higher which could also be possible because the XFX cards usually are very good for overclocking. I'll report it when it's done.

My new notebook... I don't think I change anything in there. It's all okay as it is and I use it 95% at the office or outdoors but not for gaming doom3 or anything like that. I'll install emperor on it but the notebook is good enough to handle it without any overclocking. last but not least I have no experience with notebook oc or the parts inside. In my desktop pc everything was built in by myself and so I know every componet very good and know what I can do with them.

I haven't attempted much in graphics card oc'ing yet other than programs i've used for it such as these

Also I forgot to post on that CPU overclock that I am running air with a Thermaltake volcano adjustable speed fan since I did bump up VCore to 1.824 it only raised the temp from around 32C to 37C full load.

My next overclock will be the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ after I get everything put together.

at the weekend I'll cut out some parts of my xpc case so the nv silencer will fit.

I also plan to overclock my cpu, ram and gpu...

I'll tell you more in a few days :)

Yesterday I put a new cooler on my 6800GT and made a hole into the left side of the case so it would fit in. I overclocked the cpu and late at night I also overclocked the ram and was looking for the right timings. I ran memtest86 for 7hours last night and currently I'm running SP2004 (Prime95 mod) for testing the stability of the whole system.

later I will also overclock the gpu and maybe have a look at a 3dmark benchmark.

maybe in a few hours I can give you details about what I did and upload some picture of the tiny pc and also screenshots from cpu-z, everest benchmark...

stay tuned  ;D

I finished overclocking... actually I didn't push it too far, although I could with some more vcore, but it's okay for me like that:

AMD Athlon64 Winchester 3500+

default: 1,4 vcore // 11x200 = 2200MHz

overclock: 1,5 vcore // 11x230 = 2530MHz - stable: superpi 32m / prime95 / 3dmark05

OCZ EL Platinum Rev2 PC3200/400 Dual Channel (2x512MB)

default: 2,75 vdimm // 200MHz @ 2-2-2-5

overclock: 2,9 vdimm // 230MHz @ 2-3-3-5 1T - stable: superpi 32m / prime95 /3dmark & memtest86+ (30 passes tested)

XFX GeForce 6800GT

default: GPU 350MHz // RAM 500MHz (1000MHz)

overclock: GPU 440MHz // RAM 550MHz (1100MHz) - stable: 3dmark01 / 3dmark03 / 3dmark05

mod: installed arctic cooling silencer nv5 rev2 for better cooling

I could push the cpu further with more vcore up to 1,65v (tested this too), but as all is build into a shuttle xpc mini barebone I didn't want to push it too far because of heat production and I don't think another 150MHz would be worth the risk of crashing the cpu in a few months because of an strong increase of the vcore and much more heat.

It's fine like this, the ram works with a 1:1 clock to the cpu and still has fast timings and 1T.

I was quite impressed how much I could overclock my video card. 90MHz overclock is quite impressive on that gpu. I wanted to reach the clock of a 6800Ultra which is 425/1100 but I even got 15MHz more... actually the memory could be pushed to 1140 and the gpu to 443 without any errors and strange behaviour but I reduced them a bit. I'm very glad about that good score with the video card. I'll soon upload some picture of the system... tiny power maschine - I call it "Pony Slaystation" as it is for gaming purpose only  ;D

Nice, I have a system almost like that.

Which program did you use to overclock your cpu?

And at what temps was it running before the overclocking? (if you dont remember nvm then :P)

and after? because I'm wondering if the winchester core is cooler than the normal newcastle, because of it's lower power consumption. which it should be, but I read something about the winchester core having trouble with their heat dissipation at higher speeds.

I lowered the ram in the bios and set the maximum vcore I wanted to test (1,65). Then I used clockgen for finding good values in windows mode. I could run superpi then if the system didn't freeze and check if the system could run the 32m test.

After everything was fine I lowered the vcore to see how much was needed for a 11x230 clock.

Then set the ram to 1:1 and tried the timings - all by bios and boots... after everything was alright I ran all the stability tests like I wrote above.

The heat is almost the same all the time, between 43-46 celsius. Because the system works with automatic fan regulation and always keeps the cpu at this temperature. Though I think it could be much cooler if I deactivated the fan controller and keep the fan working at maximum speed - but it ain't necessary. the system itself gets a bit warm inside, expecially the nforce3 ultra chipset whcih is due to the fact, that it is all built in a small form factor shuttle chassis and the chipset cooler can't get enough air because of the extended range of the video card. but the temperatures aren't critical and so everything is fine...

The last pics a bit dark, but good work anyway.

I gave up fiddling with cpu speeds when I cooked my old AMD a long time ago. Now I cannot get myself to do it. ITs nice to see someone else doing it though  :P

Oh, and get your self online on emp soon.

last overclocking I did was with a 486. It's default speeds was something of about 90mhz. I took it to 180 or so if memory serves. Never tried it after that and never overclocked another CPU or GPU after that.

Nice, I love using clockgen for the Nforce chipset boards. Probably the safest overclocking program there is. Worst case scenario is a re-boot. Haven't bumped or tried the graphics card yet but I'll give it a try also using it. Any suggestions for overclocking a 5200? Haven't tried that card yet. But no reason it can't become a test dummy. Here's all stock sets

clockgen is somehow safe... but I had to do a clearcmos once...

because I tried to get the maximum out of the cpu (as I said, it could be overclocked higher with more vcore but 330MHz overclock with 0,1v more is enough for me).

But it's a very good tool indeed.

I have no idea about a fx5200 - but can't you just take the lastest forceware driver and install the coolbits2 registry entry? this opens up a new menu point in your forceware driver where you can overclock your gpu and memory very easily. start with the memory clock and push it 5mhz further. the driver will automatically tell you, it will now test the new settings. so you push it to the limit (and maybe reduce it a bit after reaching that limit. then do the same with the gpu clock.

after everything is finde test those settings with a 3dmark benchmark because even if the drivers say the settings are okay, there can be some pixel erros in 3dmark. when everything is fine and no errors occur, you can set the new settings as default settings.

note: this wil of course only last until you reinstall windows but it's much safer than flashing a new bios on your video card.

Lol true, nothing worse than having to order a new bios chip, or for some a new Mobo. Thank god Asus didn't solder the chip on my board.  ;) That 20 dollar speck of plastic can wreak havoc. But yea, i'll try the driver o,clock a bit and see what happens.

Guitar is a pic of the original 'Frankenstrat' I have a  kramer replica of it, but do own the 5150 head with 4 12" Marshall cabinet. Really no mods needed, it's a monster.  ;)

now my gaming pc is another step closer to perfecttion: my new logitech mx518 gaming grad with up to 1600dpi arrived today... it's fast as hell and absolutely perfect for quake, cs & painkiller. with on the fly sensitivity to change dpi resolution during the game :) finally logitech got it.

my "old" mx510 will now support my notebook.

also I got an ICYBOX - a very stylisch black box where I can put a hdd in - I'm just waiting for the hdd, because it ain't available yet. then I'll put a 250GB hdd in it and connect the box to my gaming pc via firewire and to the notebook either also by firewire or by usb 2.0. this is my solution for having all my files on both pcs at the same time without building a network on which either one pc must have much space for files (gaming pc and notebook both have a 80gb hdd inside for os, programs, some files...)

Just means squeezing all the Mhrz you can out of a CPU, Memory, Mobo or Graphics card but also keeping your system stable at the same time. Safe? well, as safe you allow it to be. But with certain programs it's pretty easy and somewhat safe to do.

If brain boy here messed up and screwed over his computer then no chance I'll ever try it.

That was before I was involved in the falied experiment that turned me into "brain boy". I could probably do it now, but dont have the same...desire..
