Laptops/Miscellaneous greeting to all.

So I'll be popping in every now and then to check up on you all, so sleep with one eye opened, and I don't want to catch you smoking!

And re: my going message: Yes, it was a reference to Marvin.  I had just finished watching the campy old miniseries on DVD.  Gold, I say!  Not as good as the book, mind you, but hilarious nonetheless.  The Guide scenes were great.

So I moved in with my friend and his roommates.  It's cool.  They have X-Box.  And I'm learning to play D&D, which sounds really neat.  All I need is a damned name for my rogue.  How does Ferrix Dartmoor sound?

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a laptop, and I want to get my money's worth, so I have a few questions.

-Are they inferior in any way to the PC, aside from the fact that they could hold down less paper against Hurricane Frances?

-Can they be easily upgraded?  Do they often come with 3D cards? (N.B.: I will be using it for gaming as well as internet, etc).

Hmm... I recall having more questions... but can't seem to remember what they were, so expect a follow up.  Thanks.

Mobile laptop processors are usually as good as normal processors, sometimes even faster. The newer laptops mostly do come with 3d graphics cards although they are not nearly as good as the ones you can get for pc. Usually a Geforce fx 5600 or something (not sure) or Radeon 9000. But they can handle the games that do not rely so much on graphics cards.

Upgrading your laptop is not easy and pretty expensive. I'm not an expert on laptops though so i don't exactly know what can be upgraded and what not.

I have never played D&D but i have read a bit about it on the inet and it does sound/look sweet indeed. Too bad that i've never seen it in real life. The name would be okay i guess. Usually I don't pay too much attention to it.

If you want to play games, stay away from laptops. You can't upgrade them (apart from memory and harddrive) and they're gaming abilities aren't that good (especially now that the newer games get more demanding).

D&D is very fun to play, but can be time consuming. It's especialy fun if you play with people who actually play their character :) The name sounds okay I guess

Thinking of Dungeons and Dragons and laptops, I've made a program you can run on your laptop while you play(the GM, of course). It keeps track of all the players, player effects(like spells and such) and monsters(their lives, armour, weaponry, whatever you want).

As a GM, I usually use that program. And why it's extra handy is because when time passes by, I can just click on a button, and all the effects with time limits on them get reduced properly.

Would anyone be interested?

Talk about considence...my sister just got a labtop, finally no more fights for comp... ;D

The drawback for labtops, as you had asked, the lack of ability to expend and upgrade, more expensive when compared to a desktop with same spec. Unless you really lack space in your home, or do really need a comp to bring around for school/job, go for a desktop...

For gaming, sound obviously cannot compare to the speakers in your desktop. For display cards, get something that is stated to be ATi or nVidia family, and make sure they don't share both RAM and video RAM.

D&D...you're going to pronounce that name in English right? If it's so, then I think the name is good, mind me stealing it for my char? (just kidding:))

Cyborg, mind sending me the program?

That's so damn advanced.

Mine's extremely easy, yet efficient.

It doesn't take care of ALL aspects of the game, because, after all, you're NOT playing a computer game, but it helps you remember effects and monsters. That's the whole point.

Sounds worth trying. I've just finished co-DMing an overnight dungeon with my laptop and the 3e SRD. It worked, though all NPCs should be printed off first, because it's too difficult having all the windows open at once.

Hmm... maybe I'll just get a desktop PC then, if they're easier to upgrade, etc.  I can't see myself really carrying it around with my too often.  But that means I'l also have to get a desk for a desktop PC... nuts.

So, what 3D cards are good these days?  What's the latest Voodoo model?  ;)

I'm not 100% sure my name has a good ring to it.  Both names have two syllables, and that irks me for some reason.  Dammit, my imagination sucks ass.

Cyborg:  I'll take that program, but don't send it to my hotmail addy.  I'll PM you the address you can send it to.  Thanks.

Yes, you remember right.

But last time I asked you, you didn't have a laptop.

Added to this reply is the program.

INFO:

* It only holds advanced info about monsters, as the players have their own character sheets.

Well, that was all, I guess.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Voodoo is forgotten, and 3DFX does not exist anymore.

Nvidia and ATI are the big ones nowadays, and both have cards of extreme quality.

Too much syllables...play with Ferrix Dartmoor and change it to Ferrix Moor, Ferr Dartmoor, etc. Or just input the name into the burrow downs name generator, see what it gives you, then mix and match a bit...I know I lack creativity, hell, my new char was actually called Fedaykin Khan :D

Get a ATi display card...at least you can run Doom 3 better with one than a Nvidia card :)

Upgrade of notebook computers depend very much on the producer. I personally have such machine made by Toshiba (Pentium 120, 16MB RAM, 1,38GB HDD), a small but fat computer, while it is impossible to upgrade it with producer's support. Computer itself is also made as unopenable. It can be upgraded only trough "card-station", or another external devices, also only Toshiba-made, tough there are no available for it now. I've seen that most notebooks made by Compaq are more user-friendly in this matter, as most miniaturized components (of course their cost is higher than those of normal ones) are compatible and computers are easily openable. You should check them.

Yeah, it's the complete opposite.

The nVidia drivers are tuned specifically for this game, so nVidia cards are often best.

My ATI Radeon 9700 PRO can play it at Ultra Quality  8)

No AA and 1024 * 768 pixels, though, but hey, you can't get it all with such a 'lousy' card.

I know ATI and nVidia make the best cards right now (I was kidding about the Voodoo thing, by the way), but what specific models are the best at the moment?

Is it possible to upgrade stuff like 3D cards, etc via external usb/firewire (or was firewire just an old term for USB?) ports?  If at all possible, I'd like to get a laptop.  I saw a really nice one, but it was $3000.  Expensive, but I would make use of it.  I'll post the specs next time I see it.

And the search for a name continues.  Barrow Downs just gave me crappy Lord of the Rings stuff.  I like your suggestion for shortening it though, ExSplug.

You don't buy a laptop for games...

That's just waste of money.

Don't care about the graphics card. Laptops are for Microsoft Office  :P

For Nvidia, look for any GeForce 6800 and for ATi look at x800. Basically, look a the link I posted earlier, you'll see all the latest cards (for now anyways :)).

I agree
