ok some may have noticed i was going to try and start a web page of my own for my art and stuff... I was wondering if anyone knew any good FREE web hosts that would be good for posting sometimes rather large file sized pictures and graphics. also i was wondering if there were any good web building software programs for FREE or CHEAP ($10-$20 USD). I noticed some people saying they used frontpage...... well i looked for it and i saw that the 2003 edition was $180!!! there is no way i can spend this much money, im not that serious about it...

any help is appreciated

thx,

You ISP should give you some free webspace; both of mine do.

how do you make your website from your ISP webspace, i heard about that 2 but you must understand when it comes to website language and anything to do with websites...... err well you might as well post in russian  :P

ok kool.... i can do that, ill just learn as i go i guess, plus there is that HTML thread on this board i saw...

but what about how do you host a website off your isp? do you go to your ISP's homepage and will it be on there or something?

EDIT: i found on my ISP webpage how to sign up and get the free webpage.. i have one but now i just have to read over the HTML i guess to find out how to make one and then how to put it on that website  :-

You will probably need an ftp program to transfer your files onto your ISP.

I use WS_FTP

And my first website was pretty crappy, but then I only spent 40 hours on it and had to learn HTML all at once.

Stupid frames took me 10 hours how to figure out to get it to work right >:(

I also use WS_FTP to upload my website, terrapin is also very good, but your isp should provide a free upload service, most will also provide templates so that you can build your site without learning html, if they do provide  templates you could have a basic website up in about 30 minits (basic).

Hey, man, how on Earth did you waste ten hours on learning frames? :P It's really easy and is learned in five minutes...

Because I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working right. I had all the coding in but I must've done something wrong so it wouldn't work. But then finally I found my error (after readin a book or so) and corrected it. I had no other HTML experience prior to doing the frames.

So I had no idea what I was doing.

ok, sorry i was at jujitsu :P

@ shy: earthlink

so, do you think i should try using the templates? i started on them (the fully customizable ones so i could put in my own pics) but i don think it saved cuz i had to leave in a hurry so i just quit it and left. Or do you think maybe i should try HTML? the problem with HTML is i have no idea how to start it lol (i want to have animated graphics if i can for like maybe a logo in the corner, but i dont have a clue on that kinda stuff.... i looked through that site andrew posted for HTML learning earlier.

you can also use OpenOffice for the HTML code. It's a free equivalent of Microsoft's Office and has a "open" version of FrontPage.

Windows also has the FTP options and commands in it. . just type FTP:// instead of the HTTP://

Hey slappy, if you do decide to design the website using HTML I'll be glad to help, as will all the other people on this board I'm sure.

If you like, you can download a free trial of a very popular software package called "Dreamweaver", this will give you a free 30 days of use. The product is very expensive however so purchasing the full edition may not be an option. But if you have broadband (I think its about 40 megs to download) I would recommend you doing this, just to try it out.

Unfortunatley, macromedia will ask you to sign up before you can download, but it will only take a minute.

Notepad is the only webpage builder you need. ;)

As long as you know how to make websites.

Most people say real designers use notepad and thats it, no other tools required...... but I disagree, I use Dreamweaver when designing. You get everything notepad offers, plus a preview of what the page will look like (although this preview may not be accurate when using dynamic pages).

Dreamweaver even highlights your code (especially useful for languages such as PHP) which notepad does not. It saves you a hell of a lot of time, you want to insert a picture, you could drop into the code side and type out <img alt="How not to save time" src="........etc......> OR you could click a couple of buttons.........sorted!

I also found that the easiest way to learn HTML is through experience, click a button to make a table, and then look at the code, see what made that table what it is. This is how I learnt and progressed. What my point is... I see no advantage to using notepad what-so-ever (exept maybe notepad is quicker to load by a few seconds?).

Not sure if you already found this page on your ISP's website, but if you haven't its worth a look

Anyway, good luck with what ever you choose, sure the end product will be great.

Why real designers only care to see their code as text is becuase they don't only write normal wussy html. They usually write PHP or other code that makes a variable page appearance...

Posted

Yah but website building programs add so much garbage coding its unbelieveable. And if you were at a remote location where they didn't have the program you used to make it you are screwed.

Yes when a program highlights the certain type of tags it is useful (Firefox does that when viewing source)

I sometimes use Dreamweaver because it colours my PHP code.

But Notepad is more than good enough, and loads up instantly.

Yes, webpage makers add so much junk that it's unbelieveable!

I use PHP extensivley, and I would nearly always use dreamweaver for this, I like the colour highlights and line numbers.

Junk ......... what junk?

^ Read my posts before answering.

I meant that the page preview in Dreamweaver is not of any help to most site makers...

what do you mean it loads up instantly?

when you click the file to edit, you don't have to wait for notepad to load, while Dreamweaver uses a tiny bit of time to load.

Posted

Yeah, but you have to have a load of time on your hands (like these ppl  ;)) to type HTML manually. Dreamweaver is hard to get used to at first, but its sooo much better than Frontpage - Thats just low. Dreamweaver all the way!

Posted

Yes, but if you switch files often, it's annoying to have to wait.

If you're only fixing something in some files, you will only be spending a few seconds in the file itself, and then a three second load time can be annoying. It's not that three seconds is very much, but you just get really pissed if you have to wait very much, even only for one second...  :P

ok i've figured it out....

i downloaded WS_FTP to try

i've loaded my website up..... now i just have to read tutorials on HTML coding. I figured out some real basics ( i mean basics)

but now i cant figure out how to make the page open directly to the webpage... i uploaded my txt document with the html on it to the page earthlink told me to, but it opens up to one of those pages with links to folders like data, images, parent directory, then it lists the website code document... if you want to see what i mean go here: http://home.earthlink.net/~slaphapy5

you have to click on the slaphapy5graphicdesign.txt to go to the webpage.... i wanna know how you can have it so when u hit that link it either redirects to the actual website or how to make it so the website is at that link...

thx,
