China is just doing what actual and past super powers do. USA does the same right now, did the same before. If Canada was in such a position of power, it would also attract vulture and not so honnest people. The worst threat is the bigger guy... Democracy and its mecanisms are there to limit such power, but it presently can be dodged and subtletly changed (in my opinion, some parts of Patriot Act have nothing to do with anti-terrorism).

China is simply growing, and I would guess that with what Occidental powers did there (selling opium, forcing decisions, taking cities...), rulers lurned from their history.

How can China be a military threat to its no.1 business partner? Even assuming the Chinese had an inexplicable desire to attack the USA and even assuming they could somehow win, their economy would be devastated by the destruction of American markets. Without the USA, who would buy all the cheap stuff made in the sweatshops of the new Chinese capitalists?

The only threat that China can pose is an economic threat. In other words, Chinese corporations may get the upper hand on American corporations.

Oh, but I forgot - any threat to US corporate interests gets automatically re-defined as a "threat to global security"... ::)

Not only they are modernising their army as you said, they also have countless troops. I don't think USA would actually have a chance unless they transform China into a nuclear wasteland and exterminate them.

You are right about the economical issue. But, on the other hand, conquering and colonising USA would do them extremely well, as the population stress would decrease. They'll have SPACE.

So, if CHina is ready to sustain a heavy war, they'll have much to gain.

I mean, you know that a family in CHina cannot have more that two children? That, in case the first born is a girl. If it is a boy, they won't be allowed to have another child. Space would allow them to call off those laws. Don't you think?

China would not have beaten USA in normal warfare without nukes, because the american army is the largest in the world, around 1,3 million soldiers or so... while china only has like 500 000 soldiers.

this is like a pissing contest... I see no reason why China would nor the US would ever attack each other non of the other can afford it. What this comes down to is money and power. In my eyes the US are afraid of losing ground against China, who wanna take their rightfull place as a super power (economical forget about your war theories) as Nema so wisely have put it what China is doing is called capitalism, and the US and EU are affraid atm (rightfully so) because of the removal of quata's on the Chinese export.

I respect the chinese, you wont find a more hardworking people many places, when I leave my office I still recieve mails from our HKG/Shanghai agents, they are 6 hrs ahead of me and still working. In my eyes they are earning their place and to say they are a threat to global security? no, they are a threat because they will take over the position as an economic leader ( these are all my point of views offcourse ) we, the western worlds have become way too lazy and have way to high salary, and are way too fixated on luxury goods, and we are financing the chinese take over, because of this, don't blame them, start looking inward instead.

Not really. The USA is quite crowded too, and vast parts of the population would have to move. Also, the law in China is very sensible anyway since sooner or later, all the space will be used up. It's a good idea to cut back now.

Also, Hitler's term was 'Lebensraum,' I believe. I think it translates as 'living space.'

As for the crowded United States...only certain cities.  I have to travel thirty or forty minutes to be in an area with no one around for ten or twenty miles.

BUt what I fear is that they will try to take space from Russia. Russia would crush them in battle present day, but probably not in a few years. :( THerefore I want russia to be a part of Nato.

you have to take into consideration that Russia is still knee deep in Economic and Governmental Shit!

in maybe fifteen years I could see Russia re-emerging as a superpower but untill it modernises its armed forces, Trade, government and gets rid of all that troublesome debt will it be able to do anything.

As a side note, I can see why the U.S.S.R crashed and burned sooooo quickly an spectacularly!

I don't really see much point in NATO anyway, now. Resources must be concentrated on ending poverty before westernised (and so stigmatised) military alliances.

Hmm, North Korea isn't too far behind us though.  Nor is Pakistan, nor India.  India and Pakistan both have at least a million.  North Korea has over a million just north of the DMZ. 

And if China called up a Draft, they could outnumber us easy.  Some guy over here did some calculations for a war with China.  If we killed one Chinese person per bullet, we would run out of bullets and still be overrun if they used the whole population.

plus china doesnt work the same way america or other western nations do all the time. Most of what they would base their army on are conscripts.

there is this thing I read in janes that said that if they did a full conscription of solders, they could easily achieve a mark above 325 million solders. Probably not the best trained, but that is a hell of a lot of people. They could also all be armed pretty quickly.

Probably more. The issue they would encounter would be solely dependant on the large probability of an un-successful Chinese command chain which would misuse this force.

Actually, I doubt this is correct. I recollect gazing over statistics awhile ago which put both China and Russia ahead of America for standing armies. Also, it essentially numbered off (including the reserves) the American armed forces (might have been just Army, though I doubt this) at around three million.

Number wise I'd agree with you. However, have you calculated the Russian spirit? Besides, the Russians would probably just drag them into their homeland again and wait for Winter.

I feel that armies nowadays are so small, only a few million men, during the second world war germany had like 10 million soldiers, and russia even more. those were the days.

still the western countries are supreme within technology, and would even though there are not enough bulletts to kill the chinese, we have plenty of explosives. MUAHHAHAHAHA ;D
