I think Bush knows that there is absolutely no way he could ever get away with such a thing. If Bush wants to win this election, he should say the following (paraphrased from Andy Roony -- spelling on that?)

"My fellow Americans, this is my last campaign speech, because from now on, I will not campaign as a candidate, but will do my job as a president. I have tried to serve you for these last four years, and I would like to serve you for four more. I have gotten us into a mess in Iraq, and I may have been terribly wrong -- but I still feel it is the right thing to do. I cannot take time from this matter, and others, to parade as a candidate. Elect Kerry if you will, but, right now, I have a job to do."

I think that would be awfully nice...

*paranoid* You know, this sounds A LOT like what the John Titor guy said (you know, the time traveler). He said that something that had to do with this year's elections would later result in an American civil war, and eventually, the end of the world.

Okay, I think it could be possible (not the time-travel stuff). If a terrorist attack would disrupt the elections of this year, and the United States government decided to go into Martial Law or just postpone the elections, well, I think there is a risk that a resistance would be formed (and later, the civil war).

But, the problem is, are the military and the police ready to dictatorize the USA? Are they ready to use weapons against its own citizens? Is any country ready for this?

I highly doubt that the elections will be called off.

If they were though, I would be extremely pissed at hte administration, and it would probably be one of the most unamerican acts to have been committed in american history, basically I would no longer tolerate the administration.

*people come into my house and arrest me.*  lol

seriously though dont you guys agree? Even though the thought of it happening seems a bit silly because it just doesnt seem like a possibility, if it did happen it would shame me and shame the nation. I would be outraged.

No way in hell is the U.S gonna have a Civil War now.

It is possible if the current administration turns into a dictatorship under Martial Law and etc. There is a chance, at least. More possible is the chance of separation of a state or something in that direction. I'm sure Texas would be one ;) ...

No really, what if a terrorist strike will happen on the day before or on the day of the elections? Wouldn't they at least have the elections a few days or weeks later?

I mean, democracy is important, but when there is panic and chaos and people screaming "judgement day" on the streets, I'm sure they would consider to calm down the situation before any elections take place at all.

And what would happen if this situation became reality? Well, there is a chance that the terrorist strike would be used as another buffer for George Bush, because they're into all this terrorism-stuff too deep now to just throw it aside and move on.

Besides, imagine what that would mean to the U.S. "The most powerful nation on earth is a coward!" would be the headlines on every newspaper arpund the world for weeks. Oppressive nations like North Korea, Iran and China would consider options to improve their own power in such a situation.

So - if a terrorist strike occurs - the result would be increased anti-terrorism plans (and actions - probably pointing the way for a global anti-terrorism force), or, Martial Law (with a chance of Civil War), or, become cowards for a very long, long time.

This situation seems to be a dead-end to me.

A global antiterrorism force is perhaps the best idea I have heard yet to combat terrorism. From all nations, this force is most likely not to be used as a tool of national self-interest, and might actually help prevent terrorism -- would you attack a target that represents all humanity?

Yep.  The World Trade Center.  The Twin Towers lost nearly 3000 people from 98 nations around the world.

That was different. Officially, the WTC is an American target -- regardless of what it technically was. No. I mean, would terrorists target people who represented other nations besides the US. Would terrorists target a UN Anti-Terror Battalion of US, Saudi, French, and Chinese troops?

Like Wolfwiz said, that was different. They would probably attack anything American and with many floors. Besides, you could say that the U.S. is the center of economics (if that is a reason, I don't know).

But as someone else said, the United Nations NEED the be reformed. There are no large-scale wars anymore, and if there are, I can't really agree that the UN does anything about it (some African conflicts, Palestine-Israel etc). We need a more modern, cell-like structure, like UNATCO from Deus Ex (yeah, I know :) ).

The size of the organization doesn't matter, just its effectiveness and its legality. How do we save nations from each other and retain the freedom of individual nations? We must set down explicit ruled and guidelines that nations must follow for appropriate behavior or be faced with immediate, and harsh, punishment. What sort is acceptable?

lots of people are saying that martial law under george w bush is very possible, and that civil war could break out.

though that COULD happen, it to me is almost completely impossible. I mean I remembered ultra conservitive hicks saying that clinton would declare martial law, and it wasent just a few people but many during certain times in his administration.

I think that it is way too early to worry about anything like that, even if the elections were called off, which in itself is highly highly doubtful to me, but I respect the opinions you guys have... to a point.lol ;)

It's also perfectly possible that a comet of the size of the moon hits the earth and everybody dies. I would not bet my money on it.

It's an unprecedented thing in America. In England, Churchil did cancel the elections but that's because that was real war, where the very survival of the nation was threatened. Also, Churchil was trusted and respected by most of his people, wich Bush is definitely not ::)

Look, everything is possible. Britain's survival in the war made Churchill cancel the elections, and panic and chaos in the US will make Bush cancel these elections, if that will be the case. All I'm saying is that it is more likely than, say, a Day After Tomorrow scenario or something like that...

Keep in mind that Bush and his government are mostly just figureheads. They are puppets. And if they look like they're about to lose the elections, the puppeteers will simply get themselves new puppets rather than taking the risk of calling off the elections.

And who are the puppeteers controlling the government heads oh great conspirator Edric?

All leaders and all governments are puppets..... every single nation has a secret skull society that controls everything. To claim its only america is silly.
