Amiga, along with Commodore 64, was a precursor to IBM-based computers, before Windows, Macintosh, etc.  This was sort of the "golden age" of personal computers back in the 70's and 80's.

HOORAY!

WIll they be compatible with old software?

Yes but only Workbench utilities (Workbench is the amiga Windows-like), games work also but using UAE emulation. So if you are only interested in amiga games a modern Amiga does not better than a PC.

It does better than PC only if you are a Workbench fan.

Hooray! Another Amiga fan on the forum. I don't feel so lonely now :'(.

Here are only few links for people that want to know more about new Amiga:

Official site: http://www.amiga.com (AmigaOne)

Pegasos site: http://www.pegasosppc.com

Great news-site: http://www.amiga-news.de (english ver. available)

I agree with SpiceGuid on compatibility: It will only be available by some kind of emulation (UAE for example) because it's complete new technology (RISC processor as basic). The operating system is AmigaOS 4.0 now and it's fully based on previous.

Is there any ways in particular this system is better than Mac and IBM computers?

Or is it going to rely more on the owners of the old version for sales?

@Barbarossa

The main advantages are:

* load OS in 15-20 seconds

* hyper-reactive interface

* much easier and better documented programmer API

* most powerful Shell

* more stable than any OS

* unparalleled user-friendliness

* gives a unique sense of control (whole OS is less than 30Mo)

The main drawback is modern Amiga is not as feature-complete as Mac and PC, 3D and internet are not up to date. Also current early OS versions could suffer some maturity problems.

So Amiga provides better experience, not better equipment.

Sure it's not a gamer computer.

Yet it's ideal for programmers and nostalgics.

And now that Linux is as bloated as Windows, Amiga seems the only real alternative to me.

Yes first sales will rely on previous owners.

Many have doubts about the commercial viability.

The Amiga community is reported to be pretty small now.

Hopefully some popular software will appear, conquer the masses, and contribute to the success Amiga deserves.

@Minniatian

I program with Amiga-E.

I program with Amiga-E.

I used to program a bit in Amiga-E and I like it but forgot a lot. I program in C (but not C++) and pretty much in M68k Assembler. I program under system, have a book about programming under hardware but do not practice it. :D

I have written tons of small utilities for personal purpose but rather am not skilled in big projects by far. I have also done some nice work in "analyzing" some old games code or data (mentioned book was just perfect for this).

As far as I know original Amiga-E code was spread out and "clones" were made like PowerD or something.

yes, the original Amiga-E compiler is freely available with sources included:

wouter.fov120.com/e/

there is also ECX, a clone that generates native PowerPC code for newer amigas:

home.swipnet.se/blubbe/ECX

the best amiga programmer documentation:
