Yet another Arthurian film due out this year

I stumbled on this at imdb, it seems there is yet another Arthurian movie in production that hasn't been mentioned ont his site yet: Tristan and Isolde.

It stars Spider-Mans James Franco as Tristan, and seems to be distancing intself from any Arthrian connections, as it is being referred to simply as a "Dark age Celtic myth during the fall of the Roman Empire" and the cast list does not include an Arthur. Greggs Previews seems to support this.

It is being produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Reynolds who made the great Count of Monte Cristo, and the not so great Kevin Costner glamour pieces "Waterworld" and "Robin Hood: PRince of thieves".

It's due out later this year.

What's next, a miniseries based on The Mabinogion?

I said what's next, not what's already come?

You could post a thousand already made Arthurian movies/minsieries/tv series if you wanted to.

Everyone knows the ultimate arthurian movie is "Excalibur".

I don't need anything more than the "Excalibur" DVD.

I disagree about "Waterworld", it was pretty good, "Robin-Hood" however was not so great.

It makes me wonder: if our posts are motivated by the lack of more Dune movies and more Dune games, i don't think it's a good thing.

Dune has not so great commercial appeal, and to a certain extent, we have to accept that the purpose of entertainment is to make money.

After all we have the greatest compensation for less quantity: better quality.

I still watch Lynch movie, and it's still good.

I still play Dune-2000 and it's still one of the best RTS. I am really gratefull to Frank Klepacki: Dune-2000 music is amazing.

I have the Matrix DVDs, and i think that, from a Dune fan point of view, there is plenty of good material in them. There is even more to think of in "Reloaded" than in the first movie.

If you are not a fan of Excalibur i suppose no arthurian movie can touch you. Excalibur is packed with knight sins and repentance (rather than infatuous glory).

Yes Lynch's Dune rules, but it was a commercial failure, people were not ready for it. So it has ended attempts at Dune movies (for 20 years now). The Dune franchise is not an easy one: to reconciliate fans and wide audience is impossible in my opinion.

On the contrary arthurian movies are much easier to promote, because their are full of clich

That's a crass over generalization.  Just because someone doesn't like one story in a genre doesn't mean they hate the entire genre.  I may not have liked Excalibur, but I am a bit of an Arthur buff, although I prefer the more historically accurate versions than Malory's take on the tale.    Want a quick list of a few of the the Arthurian Legends, books, etc. that I have read and for the most part enjoyed?

The Crystal Cave

The Hollow Hills

The Last Enchantment

The Wicked Day

The Prince and the Pilgrim

The Mabinogion

Lancelot: Knight of the Cart

The Singing Sword

The Fort at Rivers Bend

The Eagles Brood

The Sorceror: Metamorphesis

Uther

Enemy of God

Arthur, King

Marie de France's Chevrefoil

Geoffrey of Monmouths History of the Kings of England (the parts peprtaining to Arthurian Legends, not the full text)

Nennius' account

Plus numerous other books, texts, poems, letters, and historical accounts who's titles I either cannot remember, or cannot spell without bothering to look them up.

In the next two months I plan to add:

Idylls of the King

Le Morte d'Arthur

The Once and Future King

plus numerous smaller texts.

I'm currently even enrolled in a university course dedicated to the literary Arthur (although, as stated earlier, the historical "arthur" is much more interesting to me).

I simply did not enjoy Excalibur.  That's all.
