i reckon they could have stuck a high powered FM radio on it, and transmit some music that really represents our world and how we live. Like, The Darkness - I believe in a thing called love, or hows about the 'cheeky girls's album on constant loop. Well anyway, when they've done that they should tune in to the station, and if there is no music it means either:

1) The thing ran out of batteries

2) The thing didnt have batteries

3) Beagle 2 crashed.

4) The ESA have no chance in hell of landing on mars.

5) Beagle 2 crashed.

Simple!

Well technically it was political since the lands were seen as British colonies. In any case I think the comment was more along the lines of "Why mention an empire here and in this thread?"

Yeah threads evolve, and it doesn't really count if it is the aggressor calling them colonies, they were still taken with military might.

Quite low.

As to the US' chance of getting a manned mission there, quite high. Whether they actually survive is, of course, a different matter.
