Hmmm k... i have a problem here. I read Dune in the past, with all the blood sucking in it (you know, hearplugs). And a month ago i bought myself this Dune book, though it seems it is a different version because there is absolutely NOTHING in it about the heartplug. In fact, the harkonnens in this book kinda look like the harkonnens in FHDune's miniseries... not by far as evil as i always thought.

How come? Did they make a censored version of Dune, and i bought that one? I hope anyone here knows something about this.

As far as I know there is no such thing as heartplugs in the Dune books.(that is just from lynch movie) But I may be wrong as I havnt read the book in a while(christmas present this year I hope ;D)

Maybe the book you read is a book based on lynch movie?

Hmmm, i dunno. That was the first time i read it though, i got it from a friend. I actually liked that heartplug piece... When i read that version i really thought that the harks were evil. Now they seem.... nice.

Heartplugs are like the wierding modules; they were never in the books.

And the Harkonnens are not supposed to be "evil" per se. They're just ambitious, and willing to use any means necessary to crush their enemies. Machiavellian, yes, but not evil.

That's one [more] of the downsides to the prequels. There's too much of a line between "good" and "bad" characters.

Vangaurd is right. Heartplugs were a creation of the movie. They did not exist in the books.

I'd say anyone who rapes young boys is evil, but yes, they are more machivellian than anythign else. The Baron even expresses regret about what he is doing to the atreides.

Machiavellianism is based on a Florentine philosopher named Niccolo Machiavelli, who died around 1431, if memory serves. He wrote books about statecraft and politics, such as The Prince and The Art of War (not to be confused with Sun Tzu's manual of the same name). His philosophy was basically that a ruler should be willing to go to almost any length to acquire - and maintain - absolute power, even if it means using "cheap" tactics like sabotage, lying, espionnage, and betrayal of allies when they are no longer needed. At least one of his books (the Prince) was banned by Pope Clement VIII because of the controversial tactics.

Although there is some debate over whether he actually beleived in his writings, or if he just wrote them in order to get back in good favour with the court.

I personally do recall Dune including a tidbit about Thufir having a heartplug, and I'm almost a 100% on that.

Then you've got some serious memory problems. I suggest a catscan.

I don't seem to see it. But I thought he had some "disease" or something that will kill him or am I thinking about Lynch's dune again?

They poisoned him. Harkonnens gave him daily an anti-drug so Thufir couldn't escape or betray Harkonnens.

As am i. I still remember Thufir getting a heartplug when joining the harkonnens, and the baron sucking blood from a messenger boy who brought bad news (i think)

Well, in czech version there was no mention of heartplugs. I thought it was created by Lynch. Do you know where I can download original english Dune to compare it?
