A debate - Help that is.

I am taking part in a school debate and I was wondering if you guys could give me any points *against* the motion:

This house believes that all police personnel should carry fire-arms.

Also if youve got any good points *for* it they might also be useful (so I know what to expect from the proposition).

As for the debate, I am totally for it so I will list some *for* positions.

1) Police personnel are at risk from the criminals everyday, so means of self-defense is required.

2) Police personnel may be required for backup when other personnel are busy, so being called into duty they would need their firearm.

They could carry nonlethal weapons.

The police don't want to carry weapons. ~5% said they'd leave if they were forced to carry firearms on the beat.

If the proposition argue that it'll boost police numbers, say it'd be endangering society, because anyone who joins so they can carry a gun should not be a policeman...

1) They get training don't they? Take self-defence or something. You don't need to kill to defend yourself.

2) Why? To threaten people?

Against;

1) Too dangerous. Not all police are trustworthy you know.

2) Gun = more power = more corruption = more death.

3) What happens if the police person loses a fight and some thug takes their gun?

Dust try using self-defense with your body to subdue a guy with a gun, the police do not take unnecessary risks like that.

Also, I was talking about high importance cases, like a shootout or bank robbery.
