GhostHunter
The troops that the Atreides were training, the ones that were in a thinhair of even stronger and better then the Sardukar, what purpose did they serve?Maybe my mind deludes me but I cannot recall any mentioning of any militeristic campaign in which the Atreides used them, or any real NEED for them, and weren't they training them before they got the fief for Arrakis or am I totally mistaken all together? TMA_1
how about the invasion of Ix? If I am not mistaken, they were used in that battle.
Vanguard3000
In 10,191, this new army was fairly new, and fairly small. They simply wouldn't have had much time (let alone opportunity) to whet their proverbial mettle.
Inoculator9
The books didn't have much time to address their purpose, at the time they were still in very early training so no one was making plans for them yet.
Colonel_Worf
how about the invasion of Ix? If I am not mistaken, they were used in that battle.I think you're right. They sent a lot of forces there.
Mahdi
I don't think so TMA. I think they were a remarkably new unit, Paul didn't even know of them, and they were being trained by Duncan and Gurney.
Inoculator9
Right, they would have been a conceptual idea from Jessica or Duncan at best, during the times of the Liberation of Ix. They were still in training for the Atreides arrival on Dune.

Andrew
umm I am a bit lost to this thread, did this info about an atreides army come from the "house series" or franks books?(please tell what books)
Mahdi
Then what happend to them?if they were better than the sadukar, then they were much better than the harks, why didnt they change the tide of the battle of areaken...oThey weren't better than the sardaukar they were "within a hair" as good of them.Besides, even if they were all as good fighters as Idaho 20 guys can't stop an army of a million. Vanguard3000
Ex: The Atreides army was powerful, but they were also very small. Given time, perhaps they could have come to rival the Sardaukar, but at the time, their numbers were just too small.
Mahdi
Andrew this is from Dune, it's the real reason why Shaddam turned against the Atreides.
TMA_1
that was one reason Shaddam IV attacked arrakis like he did. He wished to hit the atreides fast and hard, with as many troops as he could muster. He also used the Harkonnen troops for other more menial work on the front lines. Baron Vladimir took advantage of the lack of sheilds as well by using "primitive" technology in forcing the atreides back, rendering much of the hand to hand combat useless. at least in my opinion. Andrew
Andrew this is from Dune, it's the real reason why Shaddam turned against the Atreides. The first dune book? All I remember is that Leto sent duncan to arrakis to meet with fremen and train them.(maybe biased because of miniseries) I do remember they figured that corrino trained troops on salusa secundus. Mahdi
These troops are not even mentioned until Thufir reveals that they wre the real reason for the Emperor's treachery in his conversation with the Baron.
