Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor, did you read the part about the warning not to upgrade from Windows ME to 2000 (or XP for that matter)..It's a good support site. I will get back to you asap."Doc" Nyar...
Guest Helmsley009 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Hey Nyar, just tried doing those things you suggested, i still just get lock ups in the first 20 secs of the first mission. I was contemplating upgrading to a faster processor etc... do you think that this would have any effect?
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 It may, considering the fact you have a Celeron 400Mhz, which is slower then the Min req system specs (PII 400Mhz is faster then a Celeron 400Mhz).Never the less, if the game starts, you should be able to play it. Did you try and lower all in game graphical settings (especially turning shadows off) ?"Doc" Nyar...
Guest Helmsley009 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Nyar,Tried to go into options to lower settings, but it keeps stuffing up.What should i do?
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor, could you provide me a Dxdiag output ?Thanks."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor, another quick thing that comes into mind, try lowring your cache size for your cd rom. In windows 98/ME it should be located via Control panel => System => performance => File system => CD-rom"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Helmsley, did you try the suggestions on page 26 ? If not, please have a look and keep me updated !"Doc" Nyar...
Guest Helmsley009 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Yeh Nyar,I just checked page 26, and it didnt fix my prolem. I am strongly contemplating upgrading tomorrow, what do you think?
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 I would go for it, considering the fact that a Celeron 400Mhz is outdated. Remember though, it may not solve your problem with EBFD, so if you're going to upgrade just for that, I wouldn't do it.[Edit: If you do upgrade and continue to have problems, check back with em and I'll help.]"Doc" Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 01-20-2002).]
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor, do you have an onboard videocard next to the Viper II you have ?"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Digital, Eisenb11, Frasse, BRabbit and Duke_leeto..You all stated you had problems, but what happened ? If you do not wish to put any more effort to solving this, please let me know (or if you were able to solve, let me know how !)"Doc" Nyar...

Guest Cylor856 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Nyar, which upgrade warning and support site were you referring to?Also, I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm afraid I don't know how to generate or view a Dxdiag output... believe it or not, I used to work tech support, but it was for an ISP and I only dealt with certain network-related software. So I'm kinda in over my head with this stuff... sigh. Also, in WinXP there doesn't seem to be a way to lower my CD-ROM cache size... at least not through the "normal" methods (i.e. Control Panel, system properties, etc.).Lastly, the Viper II video card is not actually the card that came with my computer... but the original card only had 16mb of onboard memory, and I noticed an immediate and dramatic improvement in game speed when I installed the Viper II. In Windows ME, that is.

Guest Cylor856 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Nyar, I did read the notice on HP's site, as I was considering installing Win2000 before XP was released. However, when the new OS was announced, HP offered a special on an XP upgrade, so I assumed it would be safe to install XP. Moreover, I'm inclined to think that the disclaimer is more of a legal concern, to protect HP from liability... in case someone even more ignorant than me tries to do some tinkering, and ends up hosing their system. ;)Here is the result of my Dxdiag test.------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 1/20/2002, 20:52:21 Machine name: CD834232-B Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) (2600.xpclient.010817-1148) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: 00101730 7865 System Model: 15393100061142 BIOS: PTLTD - 6040000 Processor: AMD Athlon Processor, MMX, 3DNow, ~1200MHz Memory: 512MB RAM Page File: 135MB used, 731MB availablePrimary File System: FAT32 DirectX Version: DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.01.2600.0000 32bit Unicode------------DxDiag Notes------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. Guest Cylor856 Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Oh, and no, I don't have another onboard video card.
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor:"Release date: 23-Mar-2001 Version: N/A Hewlett-Packard does not recommend upgrading HP Pavilion personal computers from Windows Me edition to Windows 2000; although, some may wish to upgrade for specific needs. Click here for Information and Instructions on upgrading HP Pavilion personal computers to Windows 2000 Professional"Taken from the following thread:http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/software/viainf.exe.htmlAs for dxdiag, go to start => run and type there dxdiag.About the videocard... Is there a onboard videocard ? If so, try the option -altvid behind the game's shortcut. On the HP pages, they're talking about VIA chipsets. If you ahve a VIA chipset, go to the HP page and try updating them (if you haven't done so already)."Doc" Nyar...

Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Cylor, read the following conclusion after testing the Viper II:ConclusionThe Viper II boards has just appeared, that's why their prices are still rather high, above $200. But the prices are going to fall down to $150-$180 very soon, i.e. they're going to be cheaper than GeForce SDR. This price will make Viper II very attractive, since Rage 128 Pro, G400 Max and TNT2 Ultra will occupy this price niche. As I think among all those variants Savage2000 will be the best. It's harder for Viper 2 to compete with GeForce. GeForce won't allow using large textures in Quake3 and Unreal Tournament. GeForce SDR has a slow 32-bit color. But on the other pan of the scales there are bugs and flaws of Savage 2000. It's up to you to choose what's more important.Savage2000 advantages: High speed A little performance hit when switching to 32-bit color S3TC texture compression support Special exclusive Quake3 and Unreal Tournament versions with large textures Single pass quad texturing support Flaws: Major problems with z-buffering implementation Poor drivers (speed is very low in some games) <===Minor flaws to rendering (underfiltering, bad dithering of translucent objects) Some claimed functions won't work, especially hardware T&L No 3D acceleration in Windows 2000 Problems with subpicture blending in WinDVD 2000 I'll still look further for a solution though.."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Btw, check the following link for drivers which may be newer:http://www.savagenews.com/drivers/s3/savage2000.html"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 20, 2002 Author Posted January 20, 2002 Thanks for the reply guys ! I'll get back to you later today !Oh and about the Westwood patch.. It's like this, if no one places their peopblem with Westwood Tech support, they won't know about it and will not do anything (hence the fact I always ask to report your problem also to Westwood). If we all send our problems also to Westwood, they'll have to notice somethngs wrong.. Never the less, I will be here to troubleshoot with you, even if you logged your problem with Westwood.."Doc" Nyar...
