Wow, over 1000 posts. That's awesome Nyar! I had to make a visit to the Emperor message board just to see it for myself. Hope your holidays went well. I guess you are still playing Diablo 2. On page 26 of this thread you have enough info for an awesome troubleshooting FAQ. Everyone that has had problems with this game owes you big time. You are definitely too modest, you have done way above and beyond the call of duty. I only made a few suggestions when I felt like it, but you take care of business all the time. I will definitely check the progress of this thread from time to time to see how things are going. Take care.

Found this piece of FAQ:

"There are dozens of reasons that can cause a system to lock up, especially under intense graphical situations. First of all, verify that your system supports the minimum requirements provided by your graphics card manufacturer. Primarily, make sure if your graphics card is an AGP card, that your motherboard meets the AGP 2.0 specification. If your motherboard does not meet the AGP 2.0 specification, then it may become unstable, especially when you are running 3D applications. If you are unsure if your motherboard is AGP 2.0 compliant, please contact your motherboard manufacturer and ask them if your particular motherboard is AGP 2.0 compliant. Also, your system should be running at least a 235-watt power supply (250-watt is preferred.)

If your motherboard does meet the AGP 2.0 specification, then check that your motherboard is using the latest BIOS. You can locate the latest BIOS from your motherboard company’s Web site or from the Web site of the company that assembled your PC. Please contact the maker of your motherboard for assistance in flashing your motherboard with the latest BIOS. Flashing a motherboard BIOS is very difficult, and if performed incorrectly, can permanently damage your graphics card.

You may also need to update the AGP controller drivers for your motherboard. Some smaller computer retail stores that build custom PCs often tend to forget to install the drivers for the motherboard. This will lead to lockups when running in 3D mode. Please check with your motherboard manufacturer for the make and model of your PC chipset, and download the latest chipset drivers from their Web site. The drivers are available from:

VIA chipset - www.viatech.com

AMD chipset - www.amd.com

ALI chipset - www.ali.com.tw

SIS chipset - www.sis.com.tw

Intel chipset - www.intel.com

If you are upgrading a graphics card, then make sure the drivers from your previous graphics card are properly uninstalled. Please contact the manufacturer of your previous graphics card to find out how to properly uninstall the drivers. If the drivers are not properly uninstalled, they can conflict with other installed drivers, and slow down the performance of your graphics card.

Be sure that there are no programs running in the background that can affect the stability of your system. Virus protection programs, peer-to-peer software, and crash guard utilities can affect the stability of your system when playing 3D-intensive applications. Disable these utilities and any other programs before you run any 3D applications or games.

With more devices being included in today's PC systems, it forces system builders to install components that share IRQ's with other devices. Some components do not like sharing IRQ's and can lead to system lock ups.. To check this, click on the Start button -> select Programs -> select -> Accessories -> select System Tools and then choose System Information. Click the plus "+" sign next to Hardware Resources to expand the list and then click on IRQs. Look for your graphics card on the list. Generally, the graphics card should have its own IRQ and not be sharing one with any other device. The only thing that should be sharing the same IRQ as the graphics card is an “IRQ holder for PCI steering.” If you have anything else sharing the same IRQ as the graphics card, you must change that device's IRQ assignment. The easiest way to do this is to simply to move the device, which is sharing the IRQ with the graphics card, to a different PCI slot. Some motherboards also allow you to force an IRQ. Check with your motherboard manufacturer to see if this feature is available on your motherboard.

Thanks number6, good to see your still around :)

I already compiled a FAQ of the suggestions made here. If all goes well, it probably may be posted on www.dune2k.com. That way people will have easy access to it. I will update thta FAQ along the way and I hope future players will benifit from it as many others have done.

According to 3DMark2001 it's NVidia.

Description: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400

Manufacturer: NVIDIA

Name: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400

Posted

Radar, I know it's Nvidia, but that's just the chipset manufacturer. Nvidia chipsets are used on cards from companies like Asus, Creative, Ati, whatever. These are the names I'm looking for. The fact that Nvidia is showing up as your card manufacturer, is due to the fact that you've probably downloaded and installed a driver from their site ,which is more a "general driver" and not a card specific one.

Don't you have the bill somewhere ? or a cd with installation software ? Again, it's important for me to know..

Nyar, I just finished reading this entire thread. Took me a god three days to finish it. You amaze you. There are few people in this world willing to go out of their way to help others. By the way, is it OK if I assist you in trying to find some solutions to these lockup issues? If I don't have too much work to do, I can devote some time as the "Doc's assistant." Although my computer knowledge is probably not as advanced as yours, I would like to lend a hand with whoever still has issues. I have not encountered a single crash, lockup, or error in EB4D since I bought it, which is about a year. Would you like me to submit those diagnostic reports of my system?

Guest DevastatorElite

Nyar will give you better suggestions than what I'm going to tell you, but first off, you should try to read the steps that have been stated earlier in this topic. Once you have done that, I suggest you update your video-sound drivers, if they can be updated. Seeing that your video card is a Voodoo, I believe that the game will work best will the 1.04 driver. Once you make any changes to your drivers, you should reinstall DirectX again. You can also try experimenting with the AGP aperture size in the BIOS. I have heard that the best results are garnered with 16MB and 32MB.

Nyar, would something as simple as emptying the Temp folder and removing internet history, cookies, etc have an impact on stability?

Posted

BRabbit, make sure when you start the game, you've closed all background programs (press ctrl-alt-del just once. Close all programs by clicking on end program, except for "Systray" & "Explorer").

Also, take a look at the summary on page 26, especially the Voodoo driver part, just like Devastatorelite mentioned.

Let us know how it's going !

Dev, unless you've got less harddisk space available for a swap file, I would say it wouldn't matter much. That said, it's still a Microsoft product, so who knows :)

"Doc" Nyar...

Sure it's okay to help ! Anyone can, I just started this thread and wanted to stick with it :D

btw, there's no need to post any diagnostic from a working comp :)

Thanks for the offer !

"Doc" Nyar...

Well, it wasn't the intention to break any record, it just happened. And about the Test thread... well who knows, I never figured this thread would get this far anyway :D

"Doc" Nyar...

BRabbit, also try setting your desktop resolution to 16bits.

Another question, do you have onboard sound and are you having an extra soundblaster card installed ? I do not see soundblaster showing up as you card manufacturer, yet their drivers have been installed.

To rule out any soundcard problems, try -s behind the game's shortcut.

Nyar, maybe I forgot, but how's your case with the Westwood support department? Is your case closed? What is their stance on this issue? Usually, they say:

1. Update video/sound drivers

2. Unistall/Reinstall game

3. Reformat drive

The support department for any game is so predicatable, it's like they assume the customer doesn't try anything to solve the problem...

Posted

Did you check out that site? Its basicly a big thread about nothing. Man do I like those people.

And besides, that thread is far from the biggest ever...

Posted

DevastatorElite, I submitted a FAQ to them, I do not have a real problem, or if I did, I would solve it :D

But I'm trying to get something done for Radar's case, still no luck though..
