I'm runnning on a dell pentium 3 600 with SBLive! Value. That's really all you can get out of the diagnostic program useful, not to mention it crashes my computer 60% of the time anyways. The fact is I kept working with tech support and they just stopped sending e-mails. No "I'm sorry we couldn't help you and you're on your own," just stopped sending replies. This topic IS my last hope pretty much.

I've put this together by searching solutions on the web, refering to lock ups with games. Try these suggestions and let me know if one worked. I've you're trying the suggestions, make sure you keep track of what you've tried. Make sure you do not try several options at the same time. If one doesn't work, change it back as it was. Last, these are not suggestions I made up, so I do not want to take credit for it and make sure you use comon sence applying these suggestions.

Troubleshooting tips:

1) Make sure that the GeForce card is not sharing IRQ with any other device, except for 'IRQ Holder for PCI Steering' (Right click on “my computer” on desktop and select “properties” Go to device manager and select “settings” Here you can view IRQ resources for all devices).

2) Check if you have screensaver enabled. If so, disable it.

3) Try setting the Video BIOS shadowing option to disabled (in the BIOS).

4) Try setting your desktop colours to 256.

5) If you are using a non-Intel chipset based motherboard, make sure you download and install the very latest AGP drivers from your chipset manufacturer's website.

6) Try turning off V-SYNC in the NVIDIA control panel

7) If you're overclocking your system (or GeForce), try putting it back to default.

8) Try assigning a IRQ to your VGA in the BIOS.

9) Try the following settings in the BIOS:

* Video BIOS Shadow - Disabled

* Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled

* C8000 - xxxxx Shadow - Disabled

* Peer Concurrency - Enabled

* Concurrent PCI Host - Enabled

* PCI Streaming - Enabled

* VGA Palette Snoop - Disabled

10) Try installing the Intel chipset drivers from:

<http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm> for all versions of Windows 9x.

11) If you have an 'AGP Driving Control' setting in your BIOS, try switching it to 'BA' or another value instead of 'Auto'.

12) Check the AGP4X setting in the BIOS (If it's there that is).

13) Disable non-essential add-in devices except video one at a time in Device Manager. For example:

* Network card

* Sound card

* TV card

* Scanner interface

See if lock up behavior is resolved. If not, physically remove the add-in cards and run the game again. Once you get a stable platform, start re-installing/re-enabling devices

14) All users with AMD chipset based motherboards should also install AMD's latest AGP Miniport Driver. You can get it at the following webpage:

<http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/bin/>

15) Make sure that there is adequate cooling for your GeForce, your AGP chipset and your processor. You can see if overheating is the problem by leaving your case lid off and using a desk fan to blow inside the case.

16) Try disabling Advanced Power Management in the System Control Panel.

17) Try switching on AGP Turbo in your BIOS, turning up the Front Side Bus speed slightly, or setting your AGP ratio to 1:1 (in that order).

18) Try going into the System Control Panel, Device Manager, System Devices, Direct Memory Access Controller, and changing the Access Restrictions (on the Settings Tab) to restrict DMA transfers to memory below 16MB.

Things to experiment with:

1) AGP aperture size (keep it above 16 as setting it at or below 16 will disable AGP)

2) AGP 2x/4X mode

3) Be sure card is on IRQ 11 and no other devices share same IRQ

4) Be sure you have Via 4 in 1 driver ver 4.25 or later (If Via chipset)

5) Be sure you have latest Ali AGP driver (if Ali chipset)

6) Try the card in a different system if possible

7) Reformat if you’ve had other video cards in system before

Probably more to come... :D

Oh yes, and my problem is the EXACT same problem antonym is having. I suspect SBLive to be the culprit. I'm also running win98, and as I said, tech support now ignores my e-mails, period.

Ok. Here's what I've done.

Tried 3 different Banshee drivers (oldest version, newset version, xpentor optimizer drivers), Installed VIA's 4-in-1 chipset drivers, reinstalled Dune, Disabled my sound card, added +w to the shortcut.

It happens on every CD.

I noticed along with my Geforce it says IRQ 11 is used by "SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus". I don't know if this is whats causing the crashes or how i go about fixing it.

Hey Nyar and anybody else that can help. This goes back to my post http://messagebrd.westwood.ea.com/boards/emp/english/Forum1/HTML/007147-10.html. I upgraded my Intel INF file with some special upgrade that Intel had on their website. I am now able to play Single Player and Skirmish modes. But I am still back to the problem of the game crashing to the desktop when it shows the map for what I believe to be the last level against the Harkonnens. It shows the Duke giving his pep talk, the load screen comes on and the status goes all the way to the end, then it crashes to the desktop EVERY time. Any suggestions? I still have the open ticket w/ WW support. Here are my latest EA_Easy.txt and DXDIAG reports. Many thanks.

MrShadow, try to assign a IRQ just to your GeForce. You can try to change it in device manager (start/settings/control panel/system/and then select the tab device manager). Another option would be to assign an IRQ to VGA in your BIOS.

Let me know if you succeed.

dune01, so you're able to play the game, except for the last mission ? I remembered that you had a problem with the saved games, but it's again the same issue when you've replayed the campaign ? While I'm trying to find a suggestion, could you try to see if it's with all the cd's ? Try playing a campaign with another house and see what it does.

Nyar I posted above what I have tried.

WarpPig, you have an 8mb videocard ?

Also, try to specify your monitor within windows.

Also, summerize what you've doen so far.

(consulted tech support ?)

Update time. It still doesn't work. I am angry and bitter. And I will never play another computer game again.

Well, here is an update. I played through again, this time targetting the Ordos. And now when I get ready to invade their capital city on Arrakis, it goes to the load screen, loads all the way and then crashes to the desktop. Also, if you have noticed, I have never bashed WW tech support, but I think I have to now. I had 2 open tickets with them on this crashing to the desktop problem and they marked them both solved, without being solved. I guess the techs were trying to get their numbers for solves bumped up.

hehe hi all I'm new t the E:BFD game but not to WW games

but now my problem this isn't a real lock up but more a crash

this is my starting doing:

-click the desktop ican for E:BFD

(it starts up normal)

-if ingame i click single player

-click skirmish

-choose my options

but now i can build up a base (normal)BUT if i select a unit and try to move it it's voice keeps hanging (2 or 3 times his line) and then the game crashes to desktop

so the problem is if i try to move a unit the game crashes and goes to desktop ??

i have a K6-2 processor but i can play RA2 and C&C and tib sun and firestorm i can play everything of WW of the C&C but i can't lay this game ? plz help me

btw i can play as long as i want but as soon as i try to move a unit if crashes

and with the tutorial it always blocks when it goes to the direction of where the wall is standing

this isn't fun I'm going to try the campaign mode now but i guess it will crash too this ain't a normal hardware problem and if so i would be surpised which 1 and another thing i just tried to start up the EZ program (again) i had done it and it worked only i didn't had a right processor (see above)

but now it says it isn't a right win32 aplication (and no this game ain't copied or something like that it is the real game not borrowed or anything)

any help would be very much appreciated

btw: sorry for the rude english and sometimes bad translating because i'm not engilsh speaking but a dutchseaking (DUTCH not german)
