This abbreviation ("X" for "Christ") is very old. It dates back to ancient times. I can't remember its origin, though. But it had something to do with the Greek alphabet...

The "X" in "X-Mas" is the Greek letter chi (the CH being pronounced as a hard C). This letter is, obviously, the first letter in the name "Christ". In fact, one of the earliest Cristian symbols (before the cross) was the Chi-Rho (or Christogram). It looks like an X overlapping a P (or a P overlapping an X). They're the first two leters in "Christ".

So X-Mas isn't as cold and "materialistic" as you might think, although I do agree with those who prefer simply to say "Christmas".

Err... so have a nice day. heh heh

Vanguard is correct.

Also of note is the fish symbol for christianity - ichthus in greek:

I: I - IesuV - Jesus

CH: C - CristoV - Annointed (christ)

TH: Q - QeoV - God

U: U - UioV - Son

S: S - Swqhnai - Salvation (I think it was that)
